Broken pipe means FFmpeg could not write to its output; it does not identify why. The receiving end may have closed the connection, the network may have failed, or a local output process may have stopped. To find the cause, capture the complete log, check whether the error coincides with a playlist transition, verify YouTube’s current stream URL and key, inspect stream health and connectivity, then validate protocol and encoder settings. No single FFmpeg flag is a reliable fix for every case.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it does not
FFmpeg maps the error code EPIPE to “Broken pipe” (FFmpeg error codes). It describes a failed write, not the root cause. The message alone cannot tell you whether YouTube closed the connection, the network interrupted it, a local consumer exited, or another output problem occurred.
Find the first error in the full log and note the output URL scheme and muxer. Later messages about writing the trailer or finalizing the muxer can be consequences of the original failure rather than separate causes. Logs may include av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe or “Error muxing a packet.”
Collect the evidence before changing settings
- Save the exact command. Remove or redact the stream key before sharing it. YouTube treats a stream key as a password-like credential (YouTube: stream settings).
- Capture FFmpeg’s version and build details. Include the output of
ffmpeg -versionand the complete stderr from startup through failure. - Record when it fails. Note whether it happens immediately, during a particular playlist item transition, at the point a file repeats, or only after a long run.
- Identify the output type. Record whether the destination uses RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS, along with the output muxer shown in the command or log.
Without the failing command, FFmpeg build, protocol, and surrounding log lines, a particular root cause cannot be identified reliably.

Check whether the playlist or file loop is the trigger
Compare the error timestamp with the end of each item and the start of the next. A loop-boundary failure has been reported: in an FFmpeg-user mailing-list post dated 20 October 2023, Rob Desilets reported av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe around a repeated MP4 boundary in a command using -stream_loop -1 -re and stream copy (FFmpeg-user mailing-list post). That is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof that looping or stream copy is generally defective.
- Run one source file by itself using the same destination and output settings.
- Run the playlist or repeat test under the same conditions.
- Compare the full logs and note whether the first write error appears only at a transition.
If only a transition fails, investigate whether the sources have compatible stream parameters and continuous timestamps across the change. If a single file fails too, prioritize the destination, connection, and encoder health instead. These tests narrow the investigation; they do not guarantee a particular adjustment will fix it.

Verify YouTube’s current stream URL and key
Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current Stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Do not rely on a guessed or old ingestion URL. YouTube advises copying the current key into the encoder when stream startup is rejected (YouTube: fix live stream problems).
- Check that the URL scheme in your command matches the protocol you intend to use.
- Check that the key has no missing or extra characters and that the encoder is using the current key.
- Do not post the key in a public log, forum, or support request.
Inspect stream health and the outbound connection
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm the encoder is operating as expected. YouTube also recommends checking the strength of the outbound internet connection (YouTube: fix live stream problems; YouTube: live encoder settings).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If FFmpeg’s local output appears healthy but YouTube reports a problem or viewers see interruptions, investigate the outbound path and whether the connection can sustain the configured upload rate. A nominal internet plan speed does not by itself establish that the sustained outbound capacity available to the encoder is sufficient.
Confirm RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS is configured correctly
RTMP and RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted RTMP ingestion. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than substituting one from memory (YouTube: live encoder settings).

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- For an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking the URL and trying port 443.
- For a connection timeout, verify the URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
These are protocol-specific checks, not universal remedies for every broken pipe.
HLS
Use YouTube’s HLS requirements only if the encoder is actually sending HLS. YouTube documents HLS as segmented ingestion, with higher latency than continuous RTMP. Its HLS guidance requires HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist, no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds (YouTube: HLS ingestion). These playlist and segment constraints do not apply to ordinary RTMP or RTMPS output.

| Setting or behavior | RTMP/RTMPS | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Connection model | Continuous stream; RTMPS encrypts RTMP ingestion. | Segmented ingestion over HTTPS; YouTube documents higher latency than continuous RTMP. |
| Playlist and segments | The HLS rolling-playlist and segment limits do not apply. | Rolling playlist; TS segments, one to four seconds each, with no more than five outstanding. |
| Where to verify destination | Use the matching RTMP or RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. | Use the HLS destination and configuration specified for HLS ingestion in YouTube’s guidance. |
Validate video, audio, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the applicable row in YouTube’s current settings guidance and compare it with the encoder configuration and sustainable upload capacity (YouTube: live encoder settings).
- Confirm the video and audio codecs are supported for your chosen ingestion setup.
- Check that the encoder is using CBR where required by the selected YouTube guidance.
- Set the keyframe interval to the recommended two seconds and keep it no longer than four seconds.
- Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec, and with your available upload capacity.
These are configuration checks, not a claim that changing one setting will cure every output write failure.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Failure begins immediately | Verify the current server URL and key, the URL scheme, and whether the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. |
| Failure occurs at a file repeat or item change | Compare the failure time with the transition; test one file and then the same playlist under identical output settings; inspect stream parameters and timestamp continuity. |
| YouTube rejects startup or does not show a healthy stream | Copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then review YouTube’s stream-health information. |
| RTMPS reports an SSL certificate error | Check that the URL is correct; YouTube advises trying port 443. |
| Connection times out | Check the URL and whether the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS if that is the selected protocol. |
| Local output looks healthy, but the stream has problems at YouTube | Review YouTube stream health and test the strength and sustainable upload rate of the outbound connection. |
| Configured output is HLS | Check HTTPS, TS segment formatting, rolling-playlist behavior, segment duration, and outstanding-segment count against YouTube’s HLS requirements. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping prerecorded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than another FFmpeg flag: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
