There is no single FFmpeg flag that fixes every stream that stops after its first playlist video. First identify what “playlist” means in your command: an FFmpeg concat list, an HLS manifest, or a YouTube playlist downloaded with yt-dlp. Then check whether FFmpeg exits, the input stops advancing, or video alone disappears at the transition.
Start by identifying the playlist and where playback stops
Get the full command and the log lines immediately before and after the transition. Look at the input after -i and identify which process is supposed to advance to the next video.

- A text file listing local media files usually means the FFmpeg concat demuxer.
- A
.m3u8input is an HLS manifest; it is not a concat-demuxer script. - A command that runs yt-dlp and pipes output into FFmpeg involves downloader playlist handling and a pipe as well as FFmpeg.
Also establish whether FFmpeg exits, continues running without producing output, or continues with audio but no video. Those outcomes point to different failure locations. A community report describing a broadcast stopping at video transitions illustrates the symptom, but does not establish a universal FFmpeg defect or cause.

If your input is an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list
The concat demuxer reads a script and demuxes its listed files in sequence. It is distinct from a YouTube playlist URL and an HLS manifest. FFmpeg documents the demuxer in its Formats documentation.

Check the list file and its path
A basic list looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
When using the header for automatic format detection, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line. Check that the second video is actually listed, that the paths resolve from the location and working directory used by the command, and that FFmpeg’s input points to this list. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping.
Compare the streams in both files
Inspect both inputs with ffprobe or FFmpeg’s input logs. Compare stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, sample rates, channel layouts and other relevant stream parameters. FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”

If the files differ, -c copy does not make them compatible: stream copy passes through encoded packets rather than normalizing their properties. Prepare the files with matching streams, or consider the concat filter if decoding and re-encoding is acceptable.

The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next file’s timestamps. Incorrect or unavailable duration information can cause timing artifacts at a boundary; because timestamp adjustment is global, streams of different lengths can also leave gaps. If you know a file’s correct duration, the script’s duration directive can override the stored value. Verify the duration from the media or a reliable probe instead of guessing.

Choose between the demuxer and the concat filter
The demuxer suits compatible files when you want to join them without re-encoding. The concat filter works on decoded media and can accommodate processing or normalization, but may require re-encoding, which takes compute and can affect output quality. FFmpeg explains the distinction between these methods in its FAQ.
If yt-dlp feeds FFmpeg
In this workflow, determine whether yt-dlp is moving through the playlist and whether its output pipe stays open before changing FFmpeg’s output settings. Playlist iteration belongs to the downloader or an explicit loop; a pipe carrying one media item does not by itself mean the next playlist entry will be fetched.

- Capture yt-dlp’s progress output and check whether it reports advancing to the next playlist entry. Its documentation covers video selection and playlists.
- Test the downloader output separately, then test FFmpeg with that output. This helps identify whether the downloader stops, the pipe closes, or FFmpeg fails while consuming it.
- Check the logs at the transition for the process that stops producing data. yt-dlp’s documentation on piping output describes standard-output use.
Do not add arbitrary retry flags without the error output: retries cannot correct a playlist that is not being advanced by the process responsible for it.

If the input is an HLS manifest
Do not rewrite an HLS .m3u8 as a concat script. First clarify whether FFmpeg is reading a source HLS playlist or producing a live stream for upload; those are different workflows. YouTube’s HLS live-ingestion guide describes requirements for media playlists and uploaded segments. Those publishing requirements do not, by themselves, explain a local concat-list transition failure.

Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits at the first transition | Read the transition error in the FFmpeg log; verify the next file path, stream compatibility, and duration information. |
| FFmpeg keeps running but the next video never appears | Confirm the concat list includes the next file, or, for yt-dlp, confirm playlist progress and that the pipe remains open. |
| Audio or video has a gap or timing artifact at the boundary | Compare stream parameters and verify duration metadata; global timestamp adjustment can expose duration or stream-length differences. |
The command consumes a .m3u8 file |
Treat it as HLS and establish whether FFmpeg is reading or publishing the playlist; concat-demuxer syntax is not the fix. |
| The files have different codecs or stream layouts | Make their stream properties compatible for demuxer stream copy, or use a decoded/filter-based workflow and accept its processing and encoding trade-offs. |
For an exact diagnosis, provide the complete command, the playlist or manifest type, FFmpeg version, relevant stream information for the first two files, and log lines covering the transition. Without those details, a specific corrected command would be guesswork.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining your own FFmpeg process: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
