Start by checking which apps are using power in Settings > Battery (or Battery saver; labels vary by HyperOS version and region). If the drain began after a system update, Xiaomi says it can be temporary while the phone optimizes apps and indexes data, typically settling within a few charge cycles. If the problem persists, use the phone’s battery details to narrow down the cause before contacting Xiaomi support or an authorized service provider.
Check what is using the battery
Before changing settings, look at the phone’s battery-use chart and app-level power percentages. Xiaomi’s HyperOS guide describes this screen as showing battery-use trends and the share consumed by apps; the exact menu wording can vary by software version or region. Open Settings and look for Battery or Battery saver, then review the usage details.

Use the results to distinguish an app-specific drain from broader consumption. A single app with an unusually large share is a useful lead, not proof that the app is faulty: usage depends on what you have been doing on the phone.

Address an app that is using unusually high power

- Update the app to its current version.
- Reduce unnecessary background activity or syncing in the app’s settings.
- Temporarily restrict its background activity and see whether battery use changes.
Change one thing at a time where practical, so you can tell whether it made a difference. These checks are diagnostic; Xiaomi has not identified a particular app as the cause of drain on an individual phone.
If the drain started after a system update
Xiaomi says an update can temporarily increase battery use while the system performs background optimization, recompiles apps, and indexes data. It says this generally settles within a few charge cycles, but does not specify an exact number of hours or days. Avoid treating a short-lived increase immediately after an update as proof of a battery fault; check usage again as the phone completes this work. Use Battery saver when you need more time
Xiaomi’s HyperOS guide says Battery saver can reduce background activity, stop sync, and minimize animations. These limits may reduce how promptly apps update or sync, so use the mode when conserving charge matters more than those background functions. Xiaomi’s HyperOS battery guide describes the available battery screens and saver modes; menu names and availability may differ by version or region.

When to contact Xiaomi support
If the usage details do not reveal a manageable app issue and abnormal drain continues after the post-update activity has had a few charge cycles to settle, contact Xiaomi support or an authorized service provider for diagnosis. Battery capacity or runtime alone cannot establish remotely whether the battery is worn, and the official guidance does not promise that a factory reset will fix the problem.

Xiaomi’s regional REDMI 17 5G FAQs give different capacity figures: the global FAQ lists 7,350 mAh rated and 7,500 mAh typical, while Xiaomi India lists 7,900 mAh. These are conflicting regional claims, not one universally applicable specification. Check the FAQ for the region where your phone was sold before using a capacity figure: Xiaomi Global FAQ and Xiaomi India FAQ. Xiaomi’s reviewed pages do not provide a runtime benchmark that can guarantee how many hours an individual phone should last.
