A phone may use more power than usual just after a software update while it finishes background work, but persistent or severe drain is not automatically normal. If the update just installed and the phone otherwise behaves normally, give it a few days, then use battery-usage information to find the cause before changing settings or seeking service.
Why battery drain can rise after an update
Some phones continue background tasks after an update has installed. Apple says these tasks can affect battery life and thermal performance; Google says Pixel phones may use more battery while software downloads and optimizes; Sony describes background optimization on Xperia phones. These are manufacturer-specific explanations, not proof that every phone follows the same process or recovers on the same schedule.

Battery use can also point to a persistent app or system issue, or to battery wear that happened to become noticeable around update time. Timing alone cannot identify the cause.

1. Note when and how the drain happens
Record when installation finished, whether the phone feels warm, and whether charge falls quickly during use, while idle, or both. Check the battery graph for activity that stands out from your usual pattern. This context helps distinguish a brief burst of post-update work from ongoing consumption.

2. Allow a short observation window
If the update completed recently and the phone is otherwise working normally, use it as usual and check again after a few days. Apple advises waiting a few days after an update, and Google recommends Pixel users seek help if unusual drain remains after a few days. This is a reasonable initial window, not a guaranteed recovery deadline for every brand or model.
Do not confuse this with Google’s separate advice that Pixel battery learning after a new-device setup or factory reset can take a few weeks. That guidance is about setup or reset, not a universal post-update timeline.

Check what is using the battery
Open the phone’s built-in battery-usage screen and compare the leading apps and system activity with your normal use. Menu names vary by model and software version; use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device. The paths below apply to the specified platform guidance.

Look for a recently updated app, unusually prolonged background activity, or system activity that does not fit your normal pattern. If one app clearly stands out, update it and review its background permissions or usage. Avoid disabling unrelated system features based on a single unexpected entry.

Reduce avoidable power use while you investigate
These adjustments can preserve charge, but they do not establish or fix the underlying cause. Some may change how the phone behaves.
- Lower brightness if the screen is set unusually high. On iPhone, consider Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock if the Battery settings suggest them.
- On iPhone, turn on Low Power Mode if you need more runtime while troubleshooting; some functions may be limited.
- On supported iPhones, consider 5G Auto when the higher 5G speed is not providing a noticeable benefit.
- On Android, review battery usage and settings for avoidable consumption, following your manufacturer’s instructions.

Check for app, software, or battery problems
Update apps and check for a later system release
Make sure apps are current and check whether the phone maker has issued a later system update, using the instructions for your model. Android’s guidance notes that app updates may resolve battery-drain bugs. An available update is worth checking, but it is not evidence that the previous release caused your drain.

Review battery health or run device diagnostics
On iPhone 15 and later, and on certain iPads, Apple’s guidance places Battery Health at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, the menu is Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Menu availability varies by device. If Apple shows “Service,” it recommends considering battery replacement; that indicator is more useful evidence than the timing of the software update alone.

Google provides battery diagnostics for Pixel 6 and later. Use the built-in diagnostic guidance for your Pixel model, and contact Google if unusual drain lasts beyond a few days. A battery problem should not be diagnosed solely because drain began after an update.
For Xperia phones, Sony specifically attributes quick drain after an Android OS update to background optimization and usage-pattern learning. Samsung’s cited guidance concerns background processes and learning after setting up a new phone, so it does not establish a universal Samsung update-recovery period. When to contact the phone maker
Contact the manufacturer if unusual drain continues after the initial observation period, a built-in diagnostic flags a problem, or a battery-health screen shows a service recommendation. Provide the model, OS version, update installation date, battery-usage screenshots, and any diagnostic results. That information gives support a clearer basis to distinguish update-related activity from an app, system, or battery issue.
A factory reset, software downgrade, generic replacement battery, or opening the phone is not a sensible first-line response to post-update drain without device-specific evidence and manufacturer guidance.
