If Fallout 4 crashes, stutters, or will not launch on PC, start with reversible checks: note exactly when the problem happens, check your PC against the published requirements, update your graphics driver, temporarily disable mods, and—if you use Steam—clear launch options and verify the game files. Change one thing at a time and retry so you can tell which step helped. These checks are diagnostic, not guaranteed fixes.
Identify when Fallout 4 fails
Different failure points call for different checks. Before changing anything, write down whether Fallout 4 fails before its launcher opens, after you click Play, at the “Please Stand By…” screen, while loading a save, or during gameplay. Also note your storefront (Steam, Epic, or Xbox app), whether you use mods or Creations, and whether the problem began after a game or driver update.

Bethesda maintains separate guidance for a general crash, a crash after clicking Play, poor performance, and a crash at the “Please Stand By…” screen. Those symptoms do not establish a single cause: use the relevant branch below rather than assuming every crash is a file problem.

Compare your hardware with the requirements on the Steam Fallout 4 technical issue and system requirements page. Steam lists these minimum PC specifications:

- NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti with 2 GB or AMD Radeon HD 7870 with 2 GB-class graphics
- 30 GB storage
Steam lists higher recommended processor and graphics specifications on that page. Treat the minimums as a published baseline, not a guarantee that a PC meeting them cannot crash or stutter. Steam also says its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; check the live requirements page for current storefront details.
Install a current driver from your graphics-card vendor, then test the game again. Bethesda identifies hardware and graphics drivers among the things to check when Fallout 4 runs poorly. Do not buy a GPU, memory, or storage upgrade just because the game is misbehaving: first compare your actual components with the requirements and establish a specific limitation.

Temporarily disable mods and Creations
Mods and Creations are useful variables to isolate because Bethesda warns that custom mods can cause in-game performance issues. Disable them temporarily, then start the game and repeat the action that previously caused the problem.
- Back up your saves and configuration before removing files or changing a heavily modded installation.
- Disable mods and Creations using the method provided by the tools or platform you use.
- Retry Fallout 4 without them.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable items in small groups and test after each group. This can narrow down a conflict without assuming which specific mod is responsible.
If the problem remains with modifications disabled, continue to the relevant launch or performance checks.

If Fallout 4 crashes after clicking Play or will not launch
Steam: remove launch options and verify files
Bethesda says some Steam launch options may cause the game to crash. Clear any custom launch arguments before testing, then use Steam’s built-in verification:
- In Steam, open your Library and right-click Fallout 4.
- Select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
- Launch the game again and note whether the failure point changed.
A verification message that one or more files failed to validate does not, by itself, prove that game content is damaged. Bethesda notes that local configuration files can account for files that fail verification.

Epic or Xbox app: use the platform’s repair option
For a non-Steam installation, use the repair or validation function available in that platform rather than applying Steam-specific steps. Bethesda’s support guidance links repair instructions for Steam, the Microsoft Xbox app, and Epic; platform labels can change, so follow the current instructions for your client.
Crash at the “Please Stand By…” screen
Bethesda has separate guidance for a crash at this startup screen. If the reversible checks above do not resolve it, keep track of the exact crash point and proceed to the support-evidence section below; Bethesda specifically recommends a DxDiag report for persistent startup-screen crashes.

If Fallout 4 stutters or runs poorly
Try these settings-focused checks in order, testing the same scene or activity after each change:
- Open the Fallout 4 launcher and restore its auto-detected video defaults.
- Reduce graphics settings or resolution and retest.
- Close background applications that are not needed, then retest.
- Try borderless or windowed display mode instead of the current display mode.
Bethesda also describes resetting the game’s INI files as a way to reset settings. If you suspect custom INI edits, back up the files first. The files Bethesda identifies are Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini, and Fallout4Prefs.ini in DocumentsMy GamesFallout4. Removing them resets settings; it is a broader change than adjusting launcher options, so try the reversible checks first.
Know which version and platform advice applies
Bethesda’s Next Gen Update 2 notes, dated May 13, 2024, list PC version 1.10.984 and general stability improvements. The display-fidelity and frame-rate selection described in those notes applies to Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5, not to a PC setting. Do not use those console controls as a PC stutter fix.

When the problem persists, prepare a useful support report
If the checks do not help, contact Bethesda Support with evidence that makes the failure reproducible. Include:
- Fallout 4 version and storefront (Steam, Epic, or Xbox app)
- Windows version and your CPU, GPU, and RAM
- Whether mods or Creations are installed, and whether you tested with them disabled
- The exact failure point and the steps that reproduce it, such as launching, loading a particular save, or entering a location
- A DxDiag report, especially for a persistent crash at the “Please Stand By…” screen
