ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE means Chrome connected to a web address but received no usable data back. It does not identify one universal fault. First establish whether one website fails or every website fails. A one-site failure usually requires investigation of that site’s hosting, server, proxy, or application; a multi-site failure points toward your device, network, browser, or security software. Work from the least destructive checks to server-side diagnostics so you do not change settings unnecessarily.

What ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE means
Google Chrome Help describes the message as: “ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE: The page didn’t send any data and might be down.” In practical terms, the browser opened a connection attempt but received an empty response body instead of a page. Chrome treats this differently from errors for DNS failure, a timeout, a connection reset, or a refused connection.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A web server can close a connection before sending headers, an application can stop responding, a reverse proxy can fail to pass a request upstream, or local software can interfere with the request. The same browser code can therefore appear for unrelated reasons.
Do not assume the server is down simply because you see the code. If other websites load normally, the affected site’s infrastructure is the stronger suspect. If several unrelated sites fail, begin with the local connection and device.

Determine whether one site or many sites fail
Make this check before clearing data, changing DNS, or editing server configuration. It narrows the layer you need to troubleshoot and preserves useful evidence.
| What you observe | Most likely layer | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one domain shows ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE; other sites work | That site’s hosting, web server, application, proxy, DNS, or TLS configuration | Retry from another network, then inspect hosting and timestamped logs if you own the site |
| Several unrelated domains fail on one computer | Browser, device, firewall or antivirus, Wi-Fi/Ethernet, router, or ISP | Check the connection, restart network equipment, test Incognito, and review security software |
| Every device on one network fails, while mobile data works | Router, ISP, captive portal, DNS path, or network filtering | Complete sign-in portals, reboot the router, and contact the ISP if service remains unhealthy |
| The site works in Incognito but not a normal window | Extension or stored browser state | Disable extensions one at a time and clear cookies/cache after identifying the conflict |
Record the exact URL, time, device, browser, and network used for each test. A timestamp lets a site owner match a failed request to server and proxy logs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE as a visitor
Follow these steps in order. Stop when the page works; later steps remove more local state or require more access.
1. Verify the address and reload
Check the spelling, protocol, and path in the address bar. Remove accidental spaces or an obsolete subdomain, then reload. If the page was opened from an old bookmark, navigate to the site’s current home page and try the link again. A single mistyped or retired endpoint can fail while the rest of a site remains available.
2. Open another website
Visit two unrelated, known-working sites in the same browser. If they load, your internet connection is probably usable and the original site needs attention. If they also fail, continue with the network checks below rather than repeatedly refreshing the one URL.
3. Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet
Confirm that the computer is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network or that the Ethernet cable is seated. On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and complete the network’s sign-in or terms page; an unauthenticated captive portal can prevent normal web requests.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Restart the modem and router: disconnect power, wait for the equipment to finish shutting down, reconnect it, and wait until its normal connection indicators return. Retry only after the device has rejoined the network. If the connection remains unhealthy across devices, Chrome recommends contacting your internet service provider.
4. Test the site on another network
Use a phone’s mobile data or a different trusted Wi-Fi network, if available. A successful mobile-data test while the same URL fails on home Wi-Fi shifts suspicion toward the home router, ISP path, or network filtering. A failure on both networks makes a site-side problem more likely, especially when other domains continue to load.
5. Update and restart Chrome
Install any pending Chrome update, close all Chrome windows, reopen the browser, and try the URL again. Restarting releases browser processes that may be under resource pressure and ensures the updated network components are active.
6. Try an Incognito window
Open an Incognito window and enter the URL directly. Incognito provides a quick comparison with a cleaner session. If the page works there, a normal-window extension or stored cookie/cache state is a likely cause.

In a normal Chrome window, open the extensions manager, turn off every extension, and reload the page. If the error disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time, testing after each change. The extension enabled immediately before the failure returns is the useful suspect. Leave unrelated extensions disabled only if they are demonstrably involved; avoid disabling security controls permanently without understanding their effect.
8. Clear cookies and cached files
Delete browsing data for the affected site, or clear cookies and cached images/files through Chrome’s browsing-data settings. This signs you out of sites and can remove local preferences, so save any needed credentials or recovery codes first. Reload the URL after clearing the data. If the problem returns only after signing in, note that behavior for the site’s administrator.

9. Check firewall and antivirus controls
Security software can block a connection or terminate it before Chrome receives data. Review recent firewall or antivirus events for the browser or domain. Use a temporary, controlled pause only when the product provides a clear test option, and turn protection back on immediately after the test. If the error disappears, add an appropriate, narrowly scoped exception or ask the security-software administrator for help instead of leaving protection disabled.
10. Relieve device resource pressure
Close unused tabs and applications and restart the computer if Chrome is sluggish or other programs are failing. Low available memory can prevent a page process from completing. After the restart, test the affected URL before reopening all previous applications.

What to do when you own the website
If visitors report the error, reproduce it from more than one network before changing production settings. A failure only from one office or ISP suggests a path-specific issue; a failure from mobile data, home broadband, and a monitoring location points more strongly to the site’s service.
Capture a command-line result
Run a verbose request from a machine that can reach the internet:
curl -v https://example.com/
Replace the example address with the failing URL. Save the complete output and timestamp. cPanel documents the browser symptom alongside curl: (52) Empty reply from server; that message means the remote side closed the connection without returning data. It is valuable evidence, but it still does not reveal whether the web server, proxy, or application caused the close.
Check hosting status and resource exhaustion
Review your hosting provider’s status page and account notices for an outage, maintenance, suspended service, or exhausted resource allocation. Check whether all pages fail or only one route, hostname, or protocol. If static files work while a dynamic endpoint fails, concentrate on the application path and its upstream dependencies.

Match the failure to logs
Use the recorded timestamp, client network, and requested path to search web-server, reverse-proxy, and application logs. Look for a request that starts but has no response, a worker crash, an upstream disconnect, or a process killed for resource exhaustion. Compare a failed request with a successful request to the same path; differences in host name, protocol, headers, or backend selection often expose a routing rule.
Validate DNS and TLS configuration
Confirm that the hostname resolves to the intended current address and that both the root domain and any www or application subdomain point to the service that actually handles traffic. Verify that the TLS certificate, private key, certificate chain, and protocol settings are valid for that hostname. A mismatch can prevent a normal response even when the server itself is online.
Inspect reverse-proxy and firewall rules
If a CDN, load balancer, web application firewall, or reverse proxy sits in front of the application, inspect its upstream target, health status, timeout policy, and allow/deny rules. A proxy that cannot connect to the origin may close the client connection without a body. Check whether a recent rule change affects only certain methods, paths, countries, IP ranges, or user agents.
Confirm the application returns a response
Test the web server’s static health endpoint, then test the application route. Review application and runtime logs for fatal errors, deadlocks, failed database calls, or exhausted workers. Restarting a service can restore availability temporarily, but treat that as containment: preserve logs first and identify the condition that caused the empty reply.
A 2026 cPanel article notes that determining the proper fix may require a qualified system or network administrator. Escalate when you lack host, proxy, or server access, or when logs show a platform-level failure.

WordPress adds plugins, themes, loopback requests, and security layers that can independently produce an empty response. Make one change at a time and record the result.

Deactivate plugins individually
If the dashboard loads, open the plugins screen, deactivate one plugin, and retest the failing URL. Continue one at a time until the response returns. The last plugin changed is a lead, not proof; reactivate it once to confirm the failure and then contact its maintainer or replace it with a compatible version.
If the dashboard is inaccessible, connect through FTP or SFTP and rename the plugins directory temporarily. This disables plugins as a group so you can regain access. Rename it back, then restore plugins individually to identify the conflict. Use a maintenance window where possible because this can change site behavior while plugins are disabled.
Test the active theme
Switch temporarily to a standard, maintained theme from the WordPress themes screen. If the error disappears, inspect the previous theme’s functions, templates, and outbound requests. With no dashboard access, use FTP/SFTP to rename the active theme directory so WordPress falls back to an available standard theme.
Check loopback requests
WordPress uses loopback requests to call its own site for scheduled tasks and editor checks. In the Site Health screen, inspect any loopback failure and note the exact URL and error. Firewall rules, DNS resolution, TLS validation, or HTTP authentication can block a server from requesting its own public address even while visitors can reach it.
Review WordPress-facing security rules
Check firewall and security-plugin logs for blocked requests from the server’s own address, XML-RPC or REST restrictions, and rate limits. Verify that DNS points the server to itself as intended, that the certificate is trusted from the server, and that HTTP-authentication rules are not applied to internal callbacks. Coordinate changes with the host if a managed firewall sits outside WordPress.
Why a site may work on mobile but not Wi-Fi
This pattern is a diagnostic comparison, not a separate error type. Mobile data and Wi-Fi use different DNS resolvers, routes, public addresses, and filtering policies. If mobile succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, check the router’s DNS and filtering settings, complete any captive-portal sign-in, reboot the router, and test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If every device on that Wi-Fi fails, provide the ISP with the domain, timestamps, and command-line output. If only one computer fails on Wi-Fi, focus on that computer’s browser, firewall, or local network configuration.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Changing DNS immediately: DNS cannot repair an application that accepts a connection and sends no body. Confirm the scope and capture evidence first.
- Clearing everything before testing Incognito: You lose a useful comparison and may erase cookies needed to reproduce the issue.
- Disabling all security software indefinitely: Use a brief, controlled test and restore protection immediately.
- Restarting the server without preserving logs: A restart may remove the evidence needed to find a crash or resource limit.
- Deactivating every WordPress plugin at once: Group deactivation can restore access, but individual testing is needed to identify the responsible component.
- Assuming a successful mobile test proves the site is healthy: It only proves that one route and network can obtain a response; Wi-Fi-specific filtering or DNS problems may remain.
When to escalate
Contact the ISP when multiple devices cannot load unrelated sites after the router restart and any captive-portal sign-in. Contact the hosting provider when the domain fails from several independent networks, curl reports an empty reply, or logs show an origin, proxy, or resource fault. In WordPress, escalate to the host or developer when plugin and theme isolation does not restore the response, loopback remains blocked, or you cannot safely access FTP/SFTP and server logs.
The reliable path is always the same: establish the scope, test the least invasive local causes, collect a timestamped comparison, and only then change server or application configuration. ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE tells you that Chrome received no data; your tests determine where that data stopped being produced.
