There is no setting or driver that guarantees a universal FPS increase. Results vary with your game build, driver, resolution, hardware, world complexity and activity in the current area. Use the procedure below to find the limiting part of your own system and to produce useful evidence if you need developer support.

Start with the fastest checks
- Record your build and driver. Note the Enshrouded version shown by Steam and the date/version of your graphics driver. A change in either is important when a problem begins suddenly.
- Restart the game and the PC. This clears a one-session hitch and gives you a clean baseline before changing settings.
- Update Enshrouded. Let Steam finish all downloads before testing. Do not compare one test made before a patch with another made immediately after an incomplete update.
- Install the current driver for your GPU. Use the driver package supplied for your Nvidia, AMD or Intel graphics card, then restart Windows.
- Test the same location and camera route. Walk the same short path, look in the same direction and perform the same action. A crowded base and an open wilderness area can produce very different frame times.
If the problem remains, continue with the hardware and bottleneck checks instead of repeatedly changing random options.
Check whether your PC meets Enshrouded’s requirements
Steam’s 2024 listing gives the following Windows baseline. These are requirements for the listed build, not a promise of a particular FPS target. The listing requires 60 GB of available storage and recommends an SSD.

| Part | Minimum listed specification | Recommended listed specification | What the difference means when troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 | Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation with current updates. A newer Windows release does not by itself guarantee higher FPS. |
| CPU | Four-core Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X class | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X class | Dense bases, many placed objects and busy scenes can expose CPU limits even when the GPU is not fully occupied. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | Having the listed capacity avoids a basic shortfall; background applications can still consume enough memory to cause paging. |
| GPU | Nvidia GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM, or Intel Arc A380 | Nvidia RTX 2070 Super, AMD RX 6700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 | Resolution and visual-quality reductions primarily help when the GPU or its VRAM is the bottleneck. |
| Storage | 60 GB available space | SSD recommended | An SSD can improve loading and reduce storage-related streaming delays, but storage alone should not be presented as a guaranteed FPS upgrade. |
Steam’s requirements can change as Early Access development continues. If your machine is below the minimum GPU, VRAM or RAM specification, settings tweaks may make the game more usable, but they cannot turn below-spec hardware into the recommended tier.
Identify the bottleneck before changing quality
Use Windows Task Manager, your GPU’s monitoring overlay or another trusted hardware monitor while repeating the same route. Watch GPU utilization, dedicated GPU memory, system RAM, CPU utilization and storage activity. The figures are diagnostic clues, not universal thresholds.

| Observed symptom during the repeatable test | Likely limiting resource | First action |
|---|---|---|
| GPU utilization stays near its ceiling and lowering resolution makes the frame rate rise | GPU shader or pixel workload | Lower resolution or the most expensive quality options, then test an available upscaling mode. |
| Dedicated GPU memory is full and hitching appears when turning or entering a new area | VRAM pressure | Reduce texture or overall quality options that affect memory use; close other GPU-intensive applications. |
| One or more CPU threads are busy while GPU utilization falls, especially in a large base | CPU or simulation workload | Reduce CPU-heavy scene complexity where possible, close background programs and compare an open area with the base. |
| System RAM is nearly exhausted and disk activity rises during pauses | Memory pressure and paging | Close browsers, launchers and recording tools; keep at least the listed 16 GB available for the game and Windows. |
| Long loading or streaming pauses correlate with a mechanical hard drive | Storage throughput or access latency | Install the game on an SSD with more than the required free space. |
| The problem appears only after a game or driver update | Version-specific regression, shader rebuild or changed defaults | Restart, verify files, check the developer’s hot-fix information and record both versions. |
Do not infer a CPU limit from total CPU percentage alone. A game can be limited by one busy thread while the overall percentage looks moderate. Likewise, a high GPU percentage means the GPU is busy, not that the GPU is defective.
Apply graphics changes in a controlled order
1. Establish a baseline
Choose one save and one route that reproduces the slowdown. Record resolution, quality preset, upscaling mode and the approximate frame rate or, preferably, frame-time behavior. Change one option, repeat the route and record the result. This prevents a change that appears helpful from being confused with a different scene or background workload.

- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write

2. If the GPU is limiting performance
- Lower the output resolution or render resolution and repeat the route. A clear improvement indicates that pixel or shader workload is important.
- Move the overall quality preset down one step, then raise individual options one at a time to find the visual settings you can afford.
- Reduce settings that increase the amount of visible geometry, effects or shadows if those controls are available in your build.
- Check the game’s upscaling options. Update #3 added FSR3, so current builds may expose an FSR3 choice in the graphics menu. Compare modes at the same route and resolution; keep the option that gives acceptable clarity and frame-time consistency.
Upscaling reduces the internal rendering workload, but it can soften fine detail or produce reconstruction artifacts. Judge both motion smoothness and image quality rather than choosing a mode solely because its displayed FPS number is higher.
3. If VRAM is the constraint
Use a lower texture or quality setting when available, close overlays that use GPU memory and avoid running another 3D application at the same time. VRAM capacity is separate from system RAM: adding system memory does not increase the physical VRAM on a graphics card.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 114. If the CPU is limiting performance
Compare a busy settlement, a combat encounter and an open area using the same camera route. If only dense scenes slow down while the GPU is underused, reducing resolution will have little effect. Close background compilers, browsers, capture tools and launchers, then test again. Keep expectations realistic: a graphics preset cannot remove all simulation and world-management work from a CPU-limited scene.
5. Keep changes reversible
Write down the original settings before experimenting. If an option makes the image or frame pacing worse, restore it and continue with a different control. A stable, slightly lower setting is more useful than an aggressive preset that produces intermittent freezes.

Deal with stutter, short freezes and frame-time spikes
Stutter is not always the same as a low average FPS. A high average can coexist with occasional long frames that feel like a pause. Note when the spike happens: loading a new area, entering a large base, opening a menu, beginning combat or turning quickly toward a complex scene.
- One-time stutter after a driver or game update: restart the game and repeat the route. A change in build can alter cached data or rendering behavior.
- Repeated freezes on a powerful GPU: check the game version, driver version and official hot-fix notes rather than assuming the card is too slow. Keen Games’ Update #3 specifically said it “Fixed occurrences of short freezes on faster graphics cards.”
- Hitches during area transitions: verify that the installation is on an SSD and that Windows has free space for normal operation. Storage improvements can reduce access delays, but they are not a guaranteed FPS increase.
- Spikes while recording or overlaying: disable one overlay or capture feature at a time and repeat the same route. This isolates an interaction without permanently removing all monitoring tools.
- Spikes only in a complex base: compare the same save in an open area. If the difference is consistent, the scene’s CPU and object-simulation workload is a more useful lead than lowering resolution.
Verify the installation and recover from a bad update
Use Steam’s file check before more drastic changes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Enshrouded and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and the game, then repeat the baseline route.
Verification can replace damaged or incomplete files; it does not roll the game back to an older build. If the slowdown started immediately after an update, check Keen Games’ official hot-fix index for a matching issue and include the current build in any report. The developer has documented later fixes involving Nvidia RTX 50-series terrain-rendering glitches, crashes and other technical problems, so an older troubleshooting article may not describe the behavior of your build.
If the driver change itself preceded the problem, record the old and new driver versions. Avoid repeatedly installing unrelated driver packages without documenting each test; otherwise you lose the ability to identify which change mattered.

GPU and VRAM
A graphics card below the listed GTX 1060/RX 580 6 GB-class minimum is the clearest hardware gap. Prioritize a card with at least 6 GB of VRAM when replacing a below-minimum GPU, while recognizing that the recommended tier is substantially higher: RTX 2070 Super, RX 6700 XT or Arc A770 class. The exact FPS result depends on resolution, quality, CPU and game build.
System memory
The listing specifies 16 GB for both minimum and recommended configurations. If your PC has less, reaching 16 GB is a prerequisite-oriented upgrade rather than a guaranteed frame-rate boost. If you already have 16 GB, first check whether background applications are consuming it before buying more.
Storage
Steam requires 60 GB available and recommends an SSD. Moving the installation from a mechanical hard drive to a 1 TB NVMe SSD gives ample space beyond that requirement and can improve loading or streaming responsiveness. It should not be advertised as a guaranteed way to raise rendered FPS; storage is most relevant when loading delays, paging or area-streaming pauses are part of the symptom.
Best Value
- SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).
- CREATE AND STORE MORE. Make more room for your 4K videos and high-resolution images with capacities from 500GB[1] up to 4TB[1] on M.2 2280 built with our trusted 8th generation SANDISK BiCS QLC 3D CBA NAND.
- IT GOES WHERE YOU GO. With an all-new power efficient design, your drive delivers high performance with low power, giving you more time to be productive while on the go.
- UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
CPU
If your GPU is underused and dense bases consistently produce low frame rates, compare your processor with the i5-6400/Ryzen 5 1500X minimum and i7-8700/Ryzen 7 2700X recommended classes. A faster CPU may help CPU-limited scenes, but changing graphics quality alone cannot guarantee a fix for simulation-heavy workloads.
Use official fixes and support channels
Keen Games has published performance and stability work rather than leaving all troubleshooting to players. Update #3 stated that it “Improved stability and performance on lower hardware specs and on the Steam Deck,” added FSR3 and fixed short freezes on faster graphics cards. Hotfix #27 updated the recommended Nvidia driver to the latest version because it helped stability on RTX 50-series hardware. These statements explain why checking the current build and driver is part of the fix, not an optional formality.
If the issue is reproducible after updating and verifying files, contact Keen Games support as the developer requests. Include:
- Enshrouded build number and the date you tested.
- GPU model, VRAM capacity, CPU model, installed RAM and whether the game is on an SSD or hard drive.
- Graphics-driver version and operating-system version.
- Resolution, quality preset, upscaling mode and any overlay or recording software running.
- The save or location where it occurs, the exact steps to reproduce it and whether another area behaves normally.
- Whether the problem began after a named game update or driver installation, plus the result of Steam file verification.
A precise reproduction case is more actionable than “low FPS everywhere.” Keep your test route short enough to repeat and avoid changing several variables before filing the report.
Quick Recap
A practical decision path
- Below minimum hardware: meet the 16 GB RAM, 6 GB-or-better GPU and SSD priorities before spending time on minor quality differences.
- Meets minimum but GPU-limited: lower resolution or quality, test FSR3 or another available upscaling mode and accept the clarity trade-off that produces the most consistent frame times.
- Meets minimum but CPU-limited: close background software, compare dense and open scenes and focus on scene complexity rather than resolution.
- Memory pressure: close applications, confirm 16 GB is installed and watch for paging during the same route.
- Storage-related pauses: move the game to an SSD with at least 60 GB free, while separating loading improvements from rendered-FPS expectations.
- Started after an update: restart, verify files, install the current driver and consult the latest official hot-fix information for your build.
- Still reproducible: send the versioned hardware and reproduction details to Keen Games support.
What not to assume
- Do not treat the Steam minimum specification as a guaranteed 60 FPS target; it identifies a baseline configuration, not a universal performance result.
- Do not promise a fixed FPS gain from one setting, driver or SSD. No authoritative universal uplift is published, and results vary by system and world complexity.
- Do not assume a new GPU fixes CPU-limited bases, or that adding system RAM increases GPU VRAM.
- Do not compare screenshots or FPS numbers from different locations, resolutions or game builds as if they were a controlled test.
- Do not ignore the driver date. Keen Games’ RTX 50-series guidance demonstrates that driver version can affect stability as well as performance.
