That page displays the Moodle version and build information. If you need the code-level values or cannot open the administration page, read the installation’s version.php file in a text editor. Git-managed installations can also be checked from the repository, while non-administrators may get a branch clue from the page’s Moodle Docs for this page link.

Choose the method that matches your access
Moodle exposes its version in several places because different people have different levels of access. The administrator page is normally the best choice for a site owner. Filesystem and Git checks are useful for developers, hosting staff and support technicians who need to verify the code actually deployed on the server. A teacher without administrative access may be able to identify the major branch, but that shortcut is conditional and does not reliably provide the exact patch or build.

Use the administrator page first
MoodleDocs identifies Site administration > Notifications as the normal place to find the version. It is the least invasive method: you do not need shell access, you do not need to inspect application files, and you do not need to run a diagnostic script.
- Sign in to the Moodle site with an account that has administrator privileges.
- Open Site administration from the administration menu.
- Select Notifications.
- Read the Moodle version and build information shown on that page.
Record the complete value exactly as Moodle displays it. When reporting a problem, include both the release wording and any build information rather than shortening it to only a major number. Support staff may need the full string to distinguish a maintenance release from another release in the same branch.

If Notifications is not visible
A missing menu item usually means the account is not a site administrator, the administration menu is collapsed, or the site’s interface differs from the expected layout. Do not infer the version from the appearance of the theme or from a course page. Ask an administrator to perform the Notifications check, or use one of the code-level methods below if you manage the server.
Read the exact values in version.php
Every Moodle installation has a core code directory containing a version.php file. MoodleDocs states that the exact Moodle version can be obtained by viewing moodle/version.php in a text editor. This is a server-side file, not a normal web page.

moodle, or it may be the application’s document-root directory. - Open that directory’s
version.phpfile in a plain-text editor on the server or through your approved file-management process. - Find the machine-oriented
$versionvalue and the human-friendly$releasevalue defined in the file. - Copy both values without changing them. Keep the file closed when finished.
The two variables serve different purposes. $release is intended to be read by people and commonly contains the release and build wording. $version is the machine-oriented core code version used by Moodle’s internal checks. If you are documenting an installation, retaining both values removes ambiguity between a branch name and the exact code revision represented by that installation.
Do not open the file as browser content
MoodleDocs specifically cautions that version.php should not be viewed in a browser as an ordinary page. A web request may be blocked, may return an unhelpful result, or may expose behavior that is inappropriate for a code file. Use a text editor through server administration tools instead. Reading the file does not require editing it; do not save changes merely to inspect the values.
Make sure you read the active code directory
Large Moodle installations sometimes retain an old release beside the live one, or use a deployment layout in which the web server points to a particular directory. Check the directory configured as the active Moodle code location before opening version.php. Reading a backup or an unused staging checkout can produce a perfectly valid version number for the wrong site.

Expose the version through Moodle’s configuration object
Custom Moodle code can read the same core information through the global configuration object. MoodleDocs identifies $CFG->version and $CFG->release as the values copied from the version information. This approach is useful when you are building an internal diagnostic page, an automated compatibility check, or a support script that already runs inside Moodle.
$CFG->versionprovides the machine-oriented version value.$CFG->releaseprovides the human-friendly release value.- Read the values in a Moodle-initialized context so that the global configuration object has been loaded.
- Present the values as read-only output; a diagnostic should report them, not alter them.
For a support record, label which field produced each value. That prevents a machine-oriented number from being mistaken for a user-facing release string when the output is copied into a ticket or inventory system.
Check a Git-managed Moodle checkout
If Moodle was deployed from Git, the repository can show which commit supplied the installed version file. Start by checking the current branch with git branch. Run the command from the checkout that is actually deployed, not from a separate development clone.
Moodle 5.1 and later
For Moodle 5.1 and later, MoodleDocs gives this command:
git log --oneline -1 public/version.phpThe public/version.php path is important because newer Moodle layouts place the public version file beneath public/. The command prints the most recent commit affecting that file, providing a concise repository-level indication of the deployed version file’s history.

Moodle 5.0 and earlier
For Moodle 5.0 and earlier, use:
git log --oneline -1 version.phpHere the version file is at the checkout’s top level. Using the newer public/version.php path against an older layout, or the older path against a newer layout, can lead to a path-not-found error or cause you to inspect the wrong file.
Confirm the checkout is the one serving the site
Git history describes the files in a particular repository. It does not by itself prove that the web server is serving that checkout. Compare the repository location with the active web-server document root or deployment target, then corroborate the result in Notifications or the live installation’s version.php. This matters when production and staging environments are on the same host.
What you can learn without administrator access
A regular teacher may be able to select Moodle Docs for this page at the bottom of a Moodle page if the administrator has enabled that link. MoodleDocs documents this shortcut for English- or German-language sites. The resulting documentation URL can contain a branch number; examples include numbers corresponding to Moodle 2.7 or 3.2.
Treat the number as a branch clue, not as proof of an exact patch release or build. The link depends on administrator settings and the documented language conditions, and its branch number does not replace the value shown on the administrator’s Notifications page. If the link is absent, that absence does not identify the version; it simply means the shortcut is unavailable in that site configuration.

Branch, release and build are not interchangeable
People often ask for “the Moodle version” when they actually need different levels of detail. Use the terminology below when recording or communicating the result.

When a vendor, plugin maintainer or internal support team asks for the build, provide the complete Notifications output or both version-file variables. Supplying only a branch number can leave several possible maintenance releases unresolved.

You can log in but cannot open Site administration
Your account probably lacks administrator privileges. Ask a site administrator to read Notifications, or request a server-side check of version.php. A teacher-level account should not be granted broader permissions merely to answer a version question.
The Notifications page loads but does not show the expected details
Check that you are on the intended Moodle site and that the page has finished loading. If the display remains incomplete, have a server administrator read the active installation’s version.php. The file-based method avoids relying on the administrative interface while still exposing the core values.
The version file cannot be found
Verify the application directory and deployment layout. In a newer Git-managed layout, the relevant path may be public/version.php; in older layouts, it is version.php at the checkout’s top level. Also check whether you opened a staging, backup or inactive release directory instead of the code directory serving the site.
The Git command reports that the path does not exist
Use the command matching the Moodle layout: public/version.php for Moodle 5.1 and later, or version.php for Moodle 5.0 and earlier. Then confirm that the shell is inside the intended Git checkout and that the file is tracked there.
The documentation link shows a branch but support asks for an exact build
Provide the branch clue as preliminary information only. An administrator should read Notifications, or a person with filesystem access should report the $release and $version values from the live code directory.
A practical reporting checklist
Before opening a support ticket or planning a plugin upgrade, capture the result in a way another administrator can verify:
- Record the site or environment checked, such as production or staging.
- State whether the value came from Notifications,
version.php, the configuration object, Git, or a documentation URL clue. - Copy the complete human-readable release/build value.
- Include the machine-oriented value when you used
version.phpor$CFG. - If Git was used, include the one-line commit output and specify whether the path was
public/version.phporversion.php. - Identify any uncertainty: a non-admin documentation URL indicates a branch, not necessarily the exact patch.
This record lets a plugin maintainer or hosting team distinguish an exact deployed code version from an estimate based on interface access.
Which method should you use?
- Site owner with administrator access: use Site administration > Notifications.
- Server administrator or developer: read the active code directory’s
version.phpand retain both variables. - Custom monitoring or compatibility logic: read
$CFG->versionand$CFG->releasefrom a Moodle-initialized script. - Git-based deployment: inspect the branch and run the version-file history command matching the Moodle layout.
- Teacher without admin access: use Moodle Docs for this page only as a conditional branch clue, then obtain an administrator-confirmed value for exact support work.
For most sites, Notifications answers the question in seconds. The file, configuration and Git methods are the verification paths when you need code-level certainty or when the administrative interface is unavailable.
