Start with a full Steam Deck restart, then identify exactly where the game fails: is it missing from Steam, closing from a Steam shortcut, or failing even when opened directly in its emulator? Those symptoms point to different fixes. The steps below follow EmuDeck’s documented SteamOS checks; they are troubleshooting possibilities, not guaranteed remedies.
First, restart and pinpoint the failure
Restart the Steam Deck fully. Switching between Desktop Mode and Game Mode is not a restart. Then check which description fits:

- The game is absent from Steam: begin with Steam ROM Manager (SRM), its parsers, and your ROM folder.
- The Steam entry appears but closes immediately: check the ROM filename and Steam compatibility settings.
- The game fails when opened directly in its emulator too: check the ROM, BIOS or firmware, file path, and emulator.
- It works directly but not from Game Mode: focus first on the Steam shortcut and how it was generated.
Note whether the problem affects one game or several, the emulator involved, and whether you launch from Game Mode, Desktop Mode, or the emulator itself. That information helps narrow the cause.

SRM creates Steam entries for games; it does not repair a ROM that an emulator cannot run. In Desktop Mode, open SRM from the EmuDeck application and check the relevant parser. EmuDeck’s Steam ROM Manager guide says to select the parser, parse the games, and choose “Add to Steam.”

- Check SRM’s Exceptions list. If the game was excluded, remove the exception, save, and generate the app list again.
- Confirm the correct parser is enabled for the system. Enabling multiple parsers for the same system can create duplicate entries, and different parsers may launch different emulators or cores.
- If SRM does not detect the game, check its folder placement and accepted file format. EmuDeck identifies subfolders and incorrect formats as possible causes; consult
systeminfo.txtin the relevant ROM folder for system-specific information.
If the Steam shortcut exits, test the filename and compatibility setting
Try a simpler filename when it contains unusual characters
EmuDeck lists special characters in a ROM filename—such as apostrophes, plus signs, or accented letters—as a possible cause of a game failing to launch from Steam. If the affected filename contains them, rename the ROM file using plain letters and numbers, then run SRM again to refresh the shortcut. This is a targeted test, not a general fix for every launch failure.
Do not force Proton for EmuDeck emulated games
For an emulated game added through SRM, leave Steam’s Proton compatibility override off. EmuDeck’s SteamOS troubleshooting guidance says Proton is unnecessary for these games and warns against adding STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS to launch parameters. This guidance is about EmuDeck-handled emulated games, not every game in your Steam library.
If the emulator also fails, verify the ROM, BIOS, and folders
A ROM, BIOS, or firmware file may be corrupt, incomplete, or in the wrong format or location. A game working on another device does not rule out an incomplete transfer to the Deck. Check the emulator’s accepted file types and requirements, then compare your folder layout with EmuDeck’s ROM and BIOS import guide. Some systems require specific locations; follow the guide’s directions about whether files should be placed directly in a folder or in a subfolder.
- Check that the file copied completely and that it is a supported format.
- Confirm any required BIOS or firmware is present in the specified location.
- If the files are invalid and the transfer was sound, EmuDeck’s guidance points to redumping them from your own system.
EmuDeck says users provide their own ROMs and BIOS. Do not treat downloads from unofficial sources as a troubleshooting fix.

Update the emulator and check for SteamOS-specific conflicts
EmuDeck recommends keeping emulators and system libraries current. Use the update route that matches the emulator’s package type:
- Flatpak: update it through Discover in Desktop Mode.
- AppImage or binary: use the emulator’s updater or update it through EmuDeck, as applicable.
- Windows executable: update it through EmuDeck.
Outdated system libraries may prevent Flatpak emulators from working, but updating is maintenance—not a promise that a particular game will start afterward. If crashes continue with a Flatpak emulator installed by EmuDeck, EmuDeck identifies the Gamescope Flatpak, org.freedesktop.Platform.VulkanLayer.gamescope, as a possible conflict. Check whether it is installed with flatpak list before considering any change; do not remove packages indiscriminately.

For “unable to write path,” check the storage name first
EmuDeck says a space in an SD-card or external-drive name is a typical cause of an “unable to write path” error. If that exact error appears, rename the volume to a name without spaces and rerun EmuDeck. Its SteamOS installation guide also notes that an SD card may need an EXT4 format to be selectable during setup.

When to contact support
If these checks do not resolve the problem, gather details that distinguish an emulator issue from a Steam shortcut or device issue. EmuDeck’s troubleshooting guidance describes using Fetch Log File in the EmuDeck application and provides a Steam Deck log location. Share the relevant log and photos through EmuDeck’s Discord or Reddit support channels.
- Game title and emulator (including core, if relevant)
- Whether it is missing from Steam, exits from Steam, or also fails when opened directly
- Launch context: Game Mode, Desktop Mode, or emulator
- Exact error text and relevant Steam launch options
- SteamOS and device context, plus the steps already tried
