When an EA game bought through Steam will not start on Steam Deck or another Linux system, the failure can occur at several handoffs: Steam starts Proton, Proton starts the Windows EA app, the EA app validates your account and game, and only then does the game process launch. The right fix depends on where that chain stops.
Start with reversible checks: confirm that the Steam edition requires the EA app, record the exact symptom, update and restart SteamOS, and test a different Proton version from the game’s Compatibility settings. Use EA’s specific repair sequence for a link2ea message. Do not delete a Proton prefix or reinstall everything until you have protected saves and collected diagnostics.

First, identify which launch path you are using
Not every game with an EA publisher label uses the same licensing path. Some games purchased on Steam still require EA online activation and the EA app to be installed and running in the background. The game’s Steam store page states this in its third-party DRM or activation notice. A game purchased only through the EA app is not transferred to Steam; installing Steam or Proton cannot turn that purchase into a Steam license.
Open the game’s Steam store page and check two items before changing files:

- The Steam Deck Compatibility section. Valve’s labels are Verified, Playable, and Unsupported. They are useful evidence for this individual title, but they are not a promise that every launcher update, account state, or future game patch will behave identically.
Then describe the failure precisely. “It does not launch” is not one diagnosis. Note which of these occurs:
- Pressing Play produces no visible window.
- The EA app appears and asks you to sign in.
- A
link2eaerror appears. - Steam shows “Preparing to launch,” then returns to the Play button.
- The game window appears briefly and closes.
- The game reaches an online or service error after the launcher opens.
Write down the game title, Steam App ID, SteamOS or Linux version, selected Proton tool and version, exact error text, and whether the EA app opens before the game exits. Those details determine whether to contact Steam or EA support later.
Use the lowest-risk fixes first
Install SteamOS updates and restart
On a Steam Deck, press the Steam button, open Settings, choose System, install any available SteamOS update, and restart when prompted. If you are using another Linux distribution, apply its normal system and Steam client updates, then reboot. A restart matters because the launcher, compatibility runtime, and network session can all remain in memory after a failed attempt.

Force and test a Proton version
For the affected game, open Library, select the game, choose the gear icon, open Properties, and select Compatibility. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the latest Proton version available in your client’s list. Return to the game and test once.

Change only one Proton setting at a time. Record the version you tested and the result, then you can return to the previous choice. Valve’s Deck guidance treats this as a general stability test, not a game-specific guarantee. A different Proton build may change launcher behavior, but it cannot repair an invalid EA account entitlement or an unavailable service.

Fix the link2ea error
link2ea indicates that the Steam-to-EA handoff did not complete. EA’s official sequence is the most directly matched guidance for this message:

- Close the game and relaunch the EA app.
- In the EA app, find the affected game, open its three-dot menu, and select Repair. Wait for the check or repair to finish.
- Try launching the game from Steam again.
- If the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the EA app inside the same Proton environment used by the game, then restart the Deck or computer and test again.
EA also tells Windows desktop users to run Steam and the EA app as administrator. Do not copy that instruction literally to SteamOS: Linux desktop applications do not use Windows administrator shortcuts, and forcing elevated permissions can create new ownership and access problems. On SteamOS, stay within Steam’s normal launch flow and Proton’s compatibility settings.
If the EA app cannot be opened independently, that is a launcher-stage problem rather than proof that the game itself is incompatible. Try the update, restart, and Proton-version steps first, then repeat the relaunch and Repair sequence.
When the EA app opens, then the game closes
This symptom means the handoff may have succeeded but does not prove that it did. Separate launcher, account, and game-process causes with controlled tests.

Check the account and entitlement
Sign in to the EA account that is linked to the Steam purchase. If the app asks for login every time, note whether the sign-in completes or loops. A successful Steam installation does not grant access to a different EA account. If the game was acquired through the EA app rather than Steam, it will not become a Steam-owned title simply because the files are present in a Steam library.
Repair the game and test the overlay
Use the EA app’s Repair command for the game. EA’s general loading guidance also recommends testing with the EA in-game overlay disabled. Turn that overlay off in the EA app’s settings, launch once, and record the result. If disabling it changes the behavior, leave it off while you investigate rather than changing several other variables at the same time.
Clear launcher cache only as a targeted check
EA lists cache clearing as a remedy for some loading problems. Use the EA app’s own cache-clearing or recovery control when it is available, close the app completely, and restart before testing. Cache clearing can sign you out or remove temporary launcher data; it does not replace a game repair and is not a universal Proton fix.
Check service status and background conflicts
An online activation or service outage can stop a game after the launcher has opened. Check EA’s service-status information when the error mentions servers, authentication, or connectivity. Also close unnecessary background applications while testing. These checks come from EA’s general PC/Mac guidance, so treat them as conditional clues rather than SteamOS-specific procedures.
When Steam says “Preparing to launch” and returns to Play
A rapid return to the Play button can be caused by Proton startup failure, an EA launcher handoff failure, a missing entitlement, or a game process that crashes before displaying a window. Work through the following order:

- Confirm the game’s Steam page and Deck Compatibility status.
- Force the latest Proton version listed under Properties → Compatibility and test.
- Launch again while watching whether the EA app appears. That observation tells you whether the failure occurs before or after the launcher stage.

Do not repeatedly switch Proton builds without recording them. A series of untracked changes makes it impossible to tell which layer improved or worsened the result.

Valve documents Proton logging through a Steam launch option. Open the game’s Properties, select General, find Launch Options, and enter:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%Launch the game once, reproduce the failure, then close Steam if necessary so the log is fully written. The log is diagnostic evidence, not a repair by itself. Keep the exact Proton version, game title, App ID, and timestamp with it when asking for help. Remove personal information before posting a log publicly.
Proton creates a separate Windows-style prefix for each game. Valve’s FAQ describes the prefix inside the relevant Steam library at:

<Steam library>/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/pfx/If you have more than one Steam library, locate the library that actually contains the game. Do not assume every prefix is under one fixed home-directory path, and do not confuse another game’s App ID with this title’s prefix.
Why deleting the Proton prefix is not a first-line fix
The prefix contains the game’s Windows-side settings and user data. Depending on the title and its save design, it may also contain local saves. Deleting compatdata removes that environment and can sign you out, discard configuration, and force the EA app to be installed and authenticated again.
The official guidance collected for this problem does not establish prefix deletion as a general cure for EA App launch failures. Before any reset:
- Back up saves and configuration that matter to you, including any data stored inside the prefix.
- Confirm the exact Steam App ID and library path.
- Capture the Proton log and the precise error message.
- Look for a game-specific, documented reset procedure that explains what will be removed.
Only after those safeguards, and only when a title-specific procedure calls for it, should you consider rebuilding a prefix. A full game reinstall is even more disruptive and should not be used as a generic response to a launcher handoff error.

What Steam Deck compatibility labels mean here
Valve’s categories describe the tested experience for a game on Steam Deck, including controls, text legibility, display behavior, and compatibility expectations. A Verified or Playable label is helpful when deciding whether to investigate further, while Unsupported signals that important parts of the experience may not work. None of the labels guarantees that an EA launcher update, account link, or later game patch will preserve the same behavior.
Use the label as one data point alongside the exact game version, the Proton tool selected in your client, and the stage at which launch fails. Avoid applying a fix reported for another EA title as though all EA games share one prefix layout or launcher integration.
When to contact Steam or EA support
Escalate after the reversible sequence fails, rather than continuing to delete files or rotate compatibility tools at random. Include:
- Game title and Steam App ID.
- SteamOS or Linux distribution and version.
- Proton tool and exact version tested.
- Steam Deck Compatibility category shown on the store page.
- Exact on-screen error, including the full
link2eatext if present. - Whether the EA app opens, requests login, repairs successfully, or closes before the game starts.
- The Proton log produced with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - The steps already tried and the result of each one.
Contact EA when the problem is an EA account, entitlement, launcher installation, activation, or service-status issue. Contact Steam or Valve when Steam cannot start the compatibility tool, the Deck system is unstable, or the Proton runtime itself appears to fail. State that the Windows “run as administrator” step was not applied because the affected platform is SteamOS or Linux.
