1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no single FFmpeg option that fixes every “dropped frames” warning. First establish whether the warning comes from YouTube Live Control Room or FFmpeg itself, then compare the local output, encoder load, stream settings, and sustained upload connection. A YouTube warning alone does not prove that FFmpeg’s looping option is the cause.
Identify where the dropped-frame report comes from
Start by capturing the exact message and time it appeared. YouTube Live Control Room reports the health of the incoming stream and timestamps errors; its dashboard uses red for critical errors and yellow for moderate ones. Check whether the message is shown there or in FFmpeg’s console or log. These are different signals and should not be treated as interchangeable.

YouTube lists incorrect bitrate, frame rate, resolution, format, and keyframe frequency among settings that can prevent or degrade proper ingest or delivery. FFmpeg can also report or create frame-timing issues locally. Until you know which signal you are seeing, changing -stream_loop, bitrate, or frame rate is guesswork.
Diagnose the source, encoder, network, and settings
1. Compare local playback and FFmpeg output
Inspect the local picture and sound, then review FFmpeg’s console or log around the same timestamp as the YouTube warning. If the local output is already poor, look for encoder errors and high CPU load. If you are recording a local archive, check it too. YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic when local output is unhealthy; that is a way to isolate the problem, not proof that FFmpeg is at fault.

Keep the exact command, FFmpeg version/build, source media properties, and relevant log lines. Redact the stream key before sharing any command or log.
2. Check sustained outbound connectivity when local output is healthy
If the local stream looks and sounds healthy but YouTube reports a problem, test the outbound connection and compare sustained upload performance with the stream’s configured bitrate. A high speed-test average does not establish that upload remains stable over time. YouTube advises contacting your internet provider if a connection test shows issues.

If you are on Wi-Fi, a temporary Ethernet test can help isolate a weak local wireless link. A cable cannot fix ISP congestion, an overloaded encoder, or invalid stream settings, so treat it as a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed remedy.
3. Match the stream configuration to YouTube’s current guidance
Check the settings selected for the stream key and compare them with YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table. The relevant items include codec and format, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio format, and keyframe cadence.

- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Choose it for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying one number into every command. In YouTube’s current table, H.264 at 1080p30 is recommended at 14 Mbps and 720p30 at 8 Mbps. These are configuration recommendations, not a promise that your connection can sustain that upload rate.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports up to 60 fps. Confirm that the selected value matches what your source and encoder can deliver.
Settings tables can change; check the linked YouTube page when configuring a stream rather than relying on a saved bitrate figure from an older guide.
4. Audit input pacing and frame-rate conversion
For a file being played as a live stream, FFmpeg’s -re input option reads at the input’s native frame rate. FFmpeg documents it as useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming. Place it as an input option before the file it applies to. Do not add it indiscriminately to a genuine capture device or live input: FFmpeg warns that using a low read rate there may cause packet loss.

Also inspect explicit -r settings and frame-sync behavior. FFmpeg documents that constant-frame-rate (CFR) output can duplicate or drop frames to reach the chosen rate; variable-frame-rate (VFR) behavior may drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; passthrough retains demuxer timestamps. A frame count can therefore come from timing or conversion choices rather than a network fault. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build, since option support and behavior can differ in older packaged versions.

- Save the current command and note the source file’s resolution and frame rate, FFmpeg version/build, and the timestamped YouTube warning.
- Choose the branch supported by evidence: investigate source/encoding capacity if local output is poor or CPU load is high; investigate settings and outbound connection if local output is healthy but YouTube reports ingest problems. Both kinds of problem can occur together.
- Change only the setting tied to the evidence—for example, an incorrect keyframe interval, a frame-rate conversion, or a demonstrably unstable upload path.
- Test before the event with motion and audio similar to the intended stream, then monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room shows a warning, but FFmpeg has no matching local error | Read the exact dashboard message and timestamp; compare bitrate, format, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes with YouTube’s current guidance. Test sustained outbound upload. | Correct one evidenced settings or connection issue, then run a representative preflight test. |
| The local picture or sound is poor too | FFmpeg errors, CPU load, source file, and any local recording. | Address the encoder/source problem first; use another encoder only as a diagnostic if needed. |
| Frame duplication or drops appear after setting an output rate | Explicit -r and frame-sync mode; compare source and output frame rates. |
Use a frame-rate policy appropriate to the source instead of assuming the network caused the count. |
Warnings appear with a real live or capture input after adding -re |
Whether -re is pacing a device or live input rather than a file. |
Remove inappropriate low-rate pacing and consult the installed FFmpeg documentation. |
| The stream is healthy locally but upload testing shows trouble | Wired versus Wi-Fi performance and sustained outbound connection; if possible, compare at the intended stream bitrate. | Try a wired-link test to isolate Wi-Fi, and contact the provider if the connection test indicates an external issue. |
What to include when asking for help
Provide the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, FFmpeg version/build, source resolution and frame rate, relevant log lines, the complete timestamped Live Control Room warning, CPU load, and upload-test details. This lets someone distinguish local encoding or timing trouble from an ingest, settings, or network issue without guessing.
