In OBS, an increasing Dropped Frames counter points to a connection or bitrate problem; missed frames due to rendering lag or an encoding-overload message points to computer performance. If OBS shows no dropped frames but viewers still buffer, the problem may be their connection, device, or access to your stream—not your upload connection.
Use the matching fix below rather than lowering every setting at once. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide is dated September 30, 2024; its encoding guide and buffering guide are dated June 12 and June 9, 2021, respectively.
Identify what OBS is reporting
Open OBS’s statistics or status information while streaming and watch whether the relevant counter increases. A brief fluctuation is different from a counter that keeps climbing. OBS’s Help Portal frames this as the first question to answer: is OBS dropping frames, and if so, which kind?

These are useful signals, not absolute diagnoses. A stream can have more than one problem at once. OBS says the software itself is extremely unlikely to cause the network dropped-frame symptom; a connection to the server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate is the more relevant lead.

Fix network dropped frames
Work through these checks in order. Change one factor at a time where possible, then stream long enough to see whether the counter stops rising.
1. Test the streaming ingest server
A poor route to one server can cause drops even when another route works better. Test a different ingest server in your streaming service’s settings. For Twitch on Windows, OBS names TwitchTest as a way to compare servers by Quality score. If you use Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, OBS suggests testing with it disabled or setting its maximum streaming bandwidth below the TwitchTest result. This is a Twitch-specific diagnostic, not a universal setting for other services.
2. Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level
Lower the video bitrate in OBS’s output or streaming settings, then test again. OBS Project’s 2024 connection guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. That is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: a speed-test result measures a moment and does not establish what your route can sustain consistently. Leave headroom for upload fluctuations and other devices using the connection. Also check the current bitrate limits and recommendations of the service you stream to; there is no single bitrate that fits every service, resolution, frame rate, and connection.

3. Compare another service as a diagnostic
Testing a different streaming service can help determine whether the problem is specific to one service or its ingest route. This test can narrow the cause, but it does not fix a service-specific connection problem by itself.
4. Check Wi-Fi, VPNs, and network software
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.
- Temporarily test with a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility disabled, where safe and appropriate. Restore protection and settings after testing.
- Check for current network-card drivers. OBS specifically calls out Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC software as examples of utilities that may deprioritize OBS traffic.
Do not assume every Wi-Fi or software issue is the cause: compare results after each controlled change.
5. Inspect the local network path, then contact your ISP
OBS lists network cables, modems, routers, network cards, switches, and extenders as possible failure points. Check physical connections and restart equipment if appropriate, but do not replace hardware blindly. If you are unsure whether equipment on your side is faulty, ask your ISP to help isolate it. Congestion or routing beyond your home network can also be involved; contact the ISP if local checks do not resolve the issue.

6. Treat advanced network options as tests, not cures
OBS lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing among the configuration checks to consider. It also recommends checking that Bind to IP is set to Default and testing IPv4 Only. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6. Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not solve the root cause and reduces stream quality while active.
Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
If the warning is about missed rendering frames or encoding overload rather than network drops, focus on the computer’s available resources. A demanding game, elaborate OBS composition, and encoder can compete for the same system capacity.
1. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator
OBS says running as administrator can reserve GPU capacity for OBS and often resolve GPU-overload issues. Close and reopen OBS with administrator privileges, then check whether the rendering or encoding warning improves.

2. Give OBS more GPU headroom
- Check whether other programs are heavily using the GPU and close unnecessary workloads for a test.
- Cap the game’s frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate, enable V-Sync, or reduce the game’s graphics settings so OBS has resources to render and encode.
- Temporarily disable overlays or other GPU-heavy applications to identify whether they contribute.
3. Reduce output resolution or frame rate
Lower OBS’s output resolution or frame rate and retest. If 60 fps is not stable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. A lower output demand can relieve both rendering and encoding pressure, though it changes the stream’s appearance and motion smoothness.
4. Simplify scenes and sources
Reduce expensive filters, browser sources, and other demanding elements. Use media sized appropriately for the scene, and temporarily disable overlays or individual sources to find a costly component. Simplify a copy of the scene or collection first if you need to preserve your current layout.

First confirm the broadcaster-side Dropped Frames counter remains stable. OBS notes that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames because viewers have different networks, locations, and devices. A report from one viewer does not, by itself, prove your upload connection is failing.

If multiple viewers have trouble, consider a lower bitrate and, if needed, lower resolution or frame rate. This may make the stream easier to receive for viewers with less bandwidth. It can matter especially where the streaming service does not provide transcoding, since those viewers may have fewer ways to choose a lower-quality version. Ask affected viewers what device and connection they are using, and compare reports rather than treating every buffering complaint as the same fault.
Check stream quality settings without guessing
There is no universally correct bitrate or output combination established by these troubleshooting guides. Start with the service’s current requirements for your chosen resolution and frame rate, then ensure your stable upload capacity has room beyond the configured bitrate. If you are unsure whether the problem is network or performance, change only the setting matched to OBS’s symptom: bitrate or server for network drops; GPU load, scene complexity, resolution, or frame rate for rendering and encoding warnings.
- Record the settings that were working before making changes so you can restore them.
- After each adjustment, check the relevant OBS counter during a representative stream workload, not only while idle on the desktop.
- Do not expect a bitrate reduction to fix GPU overload, or a graphics-setting reduction to repair a poor route to the ingest server.
