How to Fix Double NAT After Adding Your Own Router

Double NAT is usually caused by an ISP gateway and personal router both routing. Use gateway bridge mode when available; otherwise use AP mode correctly.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your personal router is plugged into an ISP gateway that is also routing, two devices are performing network address translation (NAT). The cleanest fix is to put the combined ISP modem/router gateway in bridge mode and leave your router in normal router mode. If bridge mode is unavailable, disable the gateway’s Wi-Fi and configure your router as an access point (AP). When the ISP supplies a separate modem and router, you may be able to remove the ISP router entirely, provided the service and equipment support that arrangement.

Double NAT is usually harmless for ordinary browsing and streaming, but it can interfere with port forwarding, UPnP, VPN connections, online games, and communication between devices on the two private networks.

What “double NAT” means

NAT lets a router translate between a public-side connection and private addresses used by devices in your home. In a typical home, one router performs that translation. Double NAT occurs when two routers or gateways are connected in sequence and both perform it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, an ISP gateway might create one private network, such as your home’s first Wi-Fi network. Your added router then receives an address on that network and creates a second private network for its own Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi clients. Devices behind the added router can usually reach the internet, but traffic has to pass through two routing and NAT layers.

Google Nest Help says most people do not notice a general performance effect from double NAT. Any additional delay is described qualitatively as being on the order of milliseconds, not as a universal benchmark. The practical problems are usually about reachability and connection setup rather than everyday download speed.

  • Port forwarding may have to be configured on both devices, and some inbound connections still fail.
  • UPnP may open ports on the wrong router or fail to create the required mapping.
  • Online games can report strict NAT or trouble joining other players.
  • VPN connections and other services that expect direct inbound reachability can be harder to establish.
  • A printer, media device, or computer on one private network may not be discoverable from the other.

You do not need to change a working network solely because a double-NAT warning appears. Fix it when it causes a real problem, or when you want a simpler topology that you can manage from one router.

Identify your equipment before changing settings

The correct remedy depends on whether the ISP supplied one combined gateway or two separate devices. Look at the labels, cables, and administration pages rather than assuming that a box called a “modem” is only a modem.

Combined modem/router gateway

A combined gateway has the modem function that connects to the ISP and also provides routing, NAT, and often Wi-Fi. If the Ethernet cable from that gateway goes to the Internet or WAN port on your personal router, both devices can be routing.

This is the usual situation for which bridge mode is intended. Bridge mode turns off the gateway’s routing and NAT functions while leaving the underlying ISP connection available to your own router.

Separate modem and ISP router

Some installations have a standalone modem and a separate ISP router. Google identifies removing the ISP router and connecting your own router directly to the modem as an option when the service and equipment allow it. Do not assume this will work for every provider: activation rules, supported hardware, and required settings vary.

How to confirm the suspected topology

  1. Trace the cable from the wall, fiber terminal, or other ISP handoff to the first device.
  2. Note whether that device has Wi-Fi controls, a router login, or a label identifying it as a gateway.
  3. Trace the Ethernet cable from the ISP device to your personal router. A connection to the personal router’s Internet/WAN port indicates that the personal router is being used as a router, not merely as a switch or access point.
  4. Open the personal router’s status page and inspect its Internet/WAN address. If it receives an address from the ISP gateway’s private network instead of a directly assigned public-side connection, that is consistent with a second NAT layer.

Choose the right fix

Arrangement Which device routes When to use it Main trade-off
ISP gateway in bridge mode plus personal router in router mode Personal router only Preferred when a combined gateway exposes bridge mode Requires provider- and model-specific instructions
ISP gateway Wi-Fi disabled plus personal router in AP mode ISP gateway only Fallback when bridge mode cannot be enabled Some router features may be unavailable in AP mode
Remove ISP router and connect personal router to a separate modem Personal router only When the ISP service and equipment support removing the ISP router Compatibility and activation depend on the provider

Do not confuse turning off Wi-Fi with turning off routing. Disabling the gateway’s wireless radios does not stop NAT. It only removes one way of connecting to the gateway. If the gateway remains the router, the added device must operate in AP mode or another non-routing mode.

Fix 1: Put the ISP gateway in bridge mode

NETGEAR Support recommends bridge mode for best network performance when its router is connected to an ISP gateway. In this arrangement, the gateway passes the ISP connection through, and your own router handles NAT, DHCP, firewall policy, port forwarding, and other routing functions.

Before enabling bridge mode

  • Find the gateway model and the ISP’s support instructions. Menu names and eligibility differ by provider.
  • Record any gateway settings you may need to restore, such as Wi-Fi names or service-specific options.
  • Make sure you can reach your personal router’s setup page and know its administrator credentials.
  • Have an Ethernet cable available. NETGEAR’s documented installation connects an Ethernet port on the gateway to the personal router’s Internet port.
  • Expect the gateway’s own routing and usually its Wi-Fi functions to stop being the center of your home network after the change.

Enable bridge mode

  1. Sign in to the ISP gateway’s administration interface or use the provider’s app, if that is how the setting is exposed.
  2. Look for a setting labelled Bridge Mode, Modem Mode, or a similar provider-specific term. The exact location and name are not universal.
  3. Read the provider’s warning about what bridge mode disables, then apply the setting. The gateway may reboot and temporarily disconnect every device.
  4. After the gateway restarts, connect an Ethernet cable from one of its Ethernet ports to the Internet/WAN port on your personal router. This is the physical connection described in NETGEAR’s installation guidance.
  5. Run your personal router’s setup or connection wizard if it does not automatically obtain service. Keep the personal router in normal router mode, not AP mode.
  6. Reconnect clients to the personal router’s Wi-Fi or LAN ports. The gateway’s former Wi-Fi network may no longer be available or may no longer provide the network you intend to use.

What bridge mode changes

The ISP gateway stops acting as the home’s routing boundary. Your own router becomes the device that assigns private addresses, applies its firewall, and receives the upstream connection. This preserves router-mode functions that may be lost when the device is switched to AP mode.

If bridge mode is missing, greyed out, or documented as unsupported, do not guess at hidden settings. Ask the ISP whether the gateway can be bridged and whether a specific port or configuration is required for your service.

Fix 2: Use access point mode when bridge mode is unavailable

Access point (AP) mode is the common fallback for a gateway that must continue routing. The gateway remains the only NAT device; your added router supplies Wi-Fi and wired access without creating another routed private network.

Prepare the gateway

  1. Sign in to the ISP gateway and turn off its Wi-Fi radios. This prevents two nearby wireless networks from competing for the same role and makes it clear which device supplies wireless access.
  2. Leave the gateway’s routing and DHCP functions enabled. AP mode depends on the gateway remaining the network’s router.

Switch the personal router to AP mode

  1. Open the personal router’s administration interface.
  2. Find the operating-mode control. Depending on the model, it may be under Advanced Setup, Operation Mode, Wireless AP, or a similar heading. One NETGEAR example uses Advanced Setup > Wireless AP, but the company notes that menus differ among models.
  3. Select Access Point or AP mode and apply the change.
  4. Follow the model’s wiring instructions after the reboot. The device may ask you to choose an address automatically or may display a new management address supplied by the gateway.
  5. Reconnect your computers, phones, printers, and other clients to the AP’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet ports.

Features that may disappear in AP mode

AP mode intentionally removes routing functions. NETGEAR lists guest networking, website blocking, VPN service, and remote management among features that may be unavailable on its devices in AP mode. Other models can have a different list. Check the documentation for your exact router before changing modes, especially if you bought it for a firewall, VPN server, parental controls, or advanced guest isolation.

If one of those features is essential, bridge mode is generally the better arrangement because it leaves the personal router in router mode. If the ISP will not provide bridge mode, you may have to decide whether the feature is worth retaining a double-NAT design.

When the ISP modem and router are separate

With separate equipment, the simplest topology may be modem to personal router, with the ISP router removed. Google identifies this as an option when the service and hardware support it.

  1. Confirm with the ISP that a customer-owned router can connect directly to the modem.
  2. Ask whether the modem must be restarted or the service reprovisioned after the router is changed.
  3. Disconnect the ISP router and connect the modem’s Ethernet output to the personal router’s Internet/WAN port.
  4. Complete the personal router’s normal internet setup and test the connection.

If the ISP requires its router for authentication, voice service, television service, or another supported function, leave it in place and use bridge mode or AP mode as the provider directs. Removing hardware without confirming compatibility can leave you offline.

Verify that the double NAT problem is gone

Verification should target the symptom that led you to investigate. A topology that looks correct is not enough if a game, VPN, or local device still fails.

  1. Check the personal router’s Internet/WAN status. After successful bridge mode, it should be the device receiving the upstream connection. In AP mode, it should show that it is operating as an access point rather than as a second router.
  2. Reconnect a test computer or phone to the network provided by the personal router or AP.
  3. Repeat the affected task: join the online game, connect the VPN, reach the port-forwarded service, or locate the printer from the computer that needs it.
  4. Test local discovery separately from internet access. A device can browse normally while still being isolated from a device attached to another private network.
  5. If the issue remains, temporarily remove extra switches, extenders, or additional routers so that only the intended gateway and personal device are active. Add equipment back one piece at a time.

Do not interpret a successful web connection as proof that every NAT-dependent feature is fixed. Browsing generally needs outbound connections only; hosting a service or accepting an inbound game connection exercises different paths.

Common mistakes and their corrections

Only turning off the gateway’s Wi-Fi

This does not disable routing or NAT. Pair gateway Wi-Fi shutdown with AP mode on the added router, or use bridge mode if you want the added router to remain a full router.

Putting the wrong device in bridge mode

Bridge mode belongs on the ISP gateway when your own router is meant to be the primary router. Do not apply a generic bridge-mode recipe to every mesh system. Google says bridge mode on the primary device in a multi-unit Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi setup is limited to a single Wi-Fi device arrangement and can remove mesh capability and functionality. It also disables many of that system’s security protections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a third-party router used with Google Wi-Fi equipment, Google describes wiring the primary Google Wi-Fi router to the third-party router and placing additional points downstream. Because mesh layouts are model-specific, follow the instructions for the exact system rather than copying a single-router procedure.

Assuming all gateways support bridge mode

They do not. Providers may hide the setting, rename it, restrict it to certain plans, or require support to enable it. Contact the ISP with the gateway model and explain that you need the gateway to stop routing so your own router can provide NAT.

Leaving both Wi-Fi systems active

Two wireless networks do not automatically create double NAT, but leaving the gateway Wi-Fi on can cause confusing network names, roaming behavior, and accidental connections to the wrong subnet. In an AP-mode design, turning off the gateway’s Wi-Fi is part of the recommended cleanup.

Configuring port forwarding on only one router

In a true double-NAT topology, an inbound request can encounter both routers. Forwarding a port on the inner router alone may not be sufficient, and forwarding on both can still fail if either device blocks the traffic. Removing the second NAT layer is usually more reliable than maintaining two sets of forwarding rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting AP mode to preserve every feature

AP mode is a functional compromise, not merely a different name for router mode. Review the model’s feature list before switching, particularly for guest networks, website controls, VPN service, and remote administration.

If you added the router for a specific purpose

Double NAT is sometimes a symptom of solving the wrong problem with a second router. Match the replacement to the original goal:

  • Coverage in one weak area: a Wi-Fi extender may address that location without introducing another routing layer.
  • Whole-home wireless coverage: a mesh Wi-Fi system may be more appropriate than placing an independent router behind the gateway. Configure the mesh according to its supported router or AP topology.
  • More Ethernet ports: an unmanaged Ethernet switch adds ports without acting as a router.

These alternatives only avoid double NAT when the added equipment is configured as a non-routing extension or the existing gateway is put into bridge mode. Simply replacing one router with another and leaving both in router mode does not solve the topology.

Decision checklist

  • Is the ISP device a combined gateway? If yes, try bridge mode first.
  • Does the ISP expose or support bridge mode? If yes, bridge the gateway and keep your router in router mode.
  • Is bridge mode unavailable? Disable the gateway’s Wi-Fi and use AP mode on your router, after checking which features you will lose.
  • Are the modem and ISP router separate? Ask whether the ISP allows direct modem-to-personal-router use, then remove the ISP router only if supported.
  • Did the change solve the original symptom? Test the game, VPN, port-forwarded service, or local discovery problem that prompted the change.
  • Was the extra router added only for coverage or ports? Consider an extender, mesh arrangement, or unmanaged switch configured for that purpose.
