If right-clicking the desktop does nothing, shows the menu only after a long delay, or makes Explorer flicker and reload, start by restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If the menu comes back, the problem was most likely a stalled shell process rather than a hardware fault. If it does not, work through the steps below in order, moving from the least disruptive checks to the more involved ones.
Those steps cover the Windows 10 desktop context menu specifically. They are not a fix for every right-click problem, and the symptom can come from several different causes, so the order matters.

What the symptom usually looks like
Readers describe this problem in a few different ways, and each points to a slightly different place to look:
- The menu never appears. You right-click an empty part of the desktop and nothing happens, or the desktop simply stays still.
- Explorer redraws or restarts. The taskbar or desktop flickers, or the shell reloads when you right-click.
- The menu appears late. It shows up only after a pause. One Microsoft Q&A user reported a delay of about 15 seconds. That is a single user’s experience, not a typical figure, and it does not tell you how common the problem is.
A menu that never appears and a menu that appears late can share a cause, but they are not guaranteed to. Treat the steps below as a sequence of tests, not a guaranteed cure.

Before you start
- Note whether the problem happens on every right-click on the desktop or only in some places, and whether it started after an update, a new program, or a new mouse.
- Save open work. Restarting Explorer closes the taskbar and any open File Explorer windows for a moment.
- Check your Windows 10 support status. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Update options on your PC therefore depend on whether it is still receiving security updates through Extended Security Updates (ESU) or another arrangement. If you are unsure, check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update first.
Step-by-step fixes
1. Restart Windows Explorer
This is the fastest test and the one most often suggested for a desktop menu that does not appear. It refreshes the shell process without restarting the whole PC.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If you see a compact window, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer.
- Select it and click Restart in the lower-right corner.
- Wait for the taskbar and desktop to reload, then right-click the desktop again.
Expected result: the menu appears immediately. If it does not: the cause is probably not a one-off stall, so continue with the next step. Restarting Explorer does not address the underlying cause of a recurring problem.
2. Restart the PC and check Windows Update
Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting advice starts with a restart and an update check. A restart clears processes that may be stuck, and an update can fix a shell bug that a restart alone does not.

- Restart the computer and test the desktop menu again.
- If the problem continues, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available updates, then restart if Windows asks you to.
3. Check system files with System File Checker
If the menu still fails, Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance points to System File Checker for missing or damaged Windows system files. Community answers on Microsoft Q&A recommend running the scan from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Click Start, type cmd, then select Run as administrator and confirm the prompt.
- Type
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for the scan to finish. It can take several minutes. Do not close the window while it runs.
- Restart the PC when the scan completes and test the menu again.
The scan checks Windows files for damage and repairs what it can. It is a check on the operating system, not a guaranteed fix for a context-menu problem. A clean result does not rule out a third-party cause, so continue to the next step if the menu still fails.
4. Test for a third-party shell extension
Programs that add items to the right-click menu, such as archive tools, cloud sync clients, or graphics and utility software, install shell extensions. When one of them is slow or faulty, the menu can hang while Windows builds it. A Microsoft Q&A answer suggests disabling third-party shell extensions as a test. This is a diagnostic hypothesis, not a confirmed cause, and the community guidance is not a Microsoft guarantee.

Use a clean boot to test this without removing anything permanently:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Win+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, tick Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
- On the Startup tab, select Open Task Manager and disable each startup item.
- Click OK, restart, and test the desktop right-click menu.
If the menu works in this state: a third-party program is the likely cause. Return to System Configuration, re-enable the items in groups (half at a time works well), restart after each group, and stop when the menu fails again. Then uninstall, update, or contact the publisher of the program responsible. Restore normal startup afterwards by setting Selective startup back to Normal startup and re-enabling any services and startup items you want to keep.
5. Use the keyboard to open the context menu
While you troubleshoot, you can open a context menu without the mouse button. Click an empty area of the desktop or press Win+D to show it, then press Shift+F10. On keyboards with a Menu key, that key also works. Community reports cite these shortcuts as workarounds where supported.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
This lets you keep working, but it does not tell you whether the mouse, Windows, or a shell extension is responsible.

If the menu fails only with one pointing device, the problem may be the hardware or its driver rather than Windows. Test in order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Move the mouse to another USB port, preferably one directly on the PC rather than a hub.
- Try a different mouse, or the touchpad on a laptop, to see whether the menu works.
- If possible, connect the mouse to another computer. If the right-click fails there too, the mouse is the likely fault.
The sources behind this guidance do not establish that any particular mouse model, cable, or adapter fixes the problem, so do not buy hardware on the basis of this symptom alone.

What to avoid
- Do not start with registry edits. A Microsoft Q&A poster said they were reluctant to edit the registry, and the reply recommended lower-risk steps first. None of the steps above requires a registry change, and no authoritative source here establishes a registry edit as an appropriate fix for this error.
- Do not treat a passed scan as a verdict. A clean System File Checker result or a working clean boot is useful evidence, but it does not prove the cause.
When to escalate
Microsoft’s File Explorer support article covers recovery options, but it is written for cases where Explorer fails to open or start. Its advanced options, including repair and reset, are for severe, persistent Explorer failures that remain after the simpler steps above. Consider them only if Explorer itself keeps crashing, not just when the right-click menu is slow. Before a reset, back up your personal files, because a reset can remove installed apps.
If the menu still fails after the clean boot test, or if you cannot isolate the cause, gather the details you have (the Windows version, when the problem started, the last software or update you installed, and what the clean boot test showed) before contacting Microsoft Support or the publisher of the program you suspect.
