That file can make a codebase’s commands, conventions, and architecture explicit. It is a starting point for better context—not an automatic fix for unclear instructions.
What might the hidden command be?
/init is a plausible match: Anthropic describes it as a command that bootstraps a CLAUDE.md for a codebase. The title alone does not establish that this is the command its author ran, or what happened on that setup. See Anthropic’s Claude Code memory guide for the documented behavior.

The practical value of the command is the instruction file it helps create. Claude Code can use that file to retain project context, so you do not have to restate the same repository guidance in every task.
Choose where each instruction belongs
Claude Code’s documented memory locations serve different audiences. Put rules where the people and projects they apply to can actually use them.
| Location | Best for | Audience |
|---|---|---|
./CLAUDE.md |
Repository commands, architecture, and coding conventions | People working in that project |
~/.claude/CLAUDE.md |
Your personal preferences | You across projects |
Anthropic says memory files load when Claude Code starts. Use /memory to see which files are loaded and open them in an editor. That check is useful after changing the project directory or adding imports. Details are in the memory documentation.
What to put in a useful project CLAUDE.md
Prefer facts that help Claude Code work in this repository over generic advice that could apply anywhere. Anthropic’s guidance points to frequently used commands, coding style and naming conventions, and important architecture.
Rank #2
- Commands: Record the actual build, test, and lint commands developers use. Be specific enough that Claude Code does not have to guess which command or package manager applies.
- Conventions: State relevant formatting, naming, or code-organization rules that are not obvious from the task itself.
- Architecture: Note important components and how they relate, especially boundaries that should guide changes.
Keep instructions concise and actionable. A long list of broad preferences can bury the repository details that matter most. Review the memory guide for Anthropic’s recommendations.
Make individual task prompts clearer
A project memory file supplies recurring context; it does not replace a good task request. Anthropic’s prompt-engineering guidance recommends describing the desired output and constraints, explaining relevant context, and using examples that resemble the task. If the task requires a particular sequence, lay out the steps in order.
Rank #3
For coding work, distinguish the requested change from useful context: what outcome you want, which constraints must be respected, and what verification you expect. If you want Claude Code to take an action rather than offer guidance, say so explicitly; Anthropic’s tool-use documentation addresses making action expectations clear. These practices improve communication, but do not guarantee a particular result.
Keep guidance modular without losing track of it
Anthropic documents an import syntax for bringing another file into CLAUDE.md: write @path/to/import. Imports can be recursive up to five levels. This lets a project keep specialized or longer guidance in separate files, but creates more material to maintain. Use /memory to inspect the loaded files and confirm that the intended instructions are present. The syntax and limits are described in the memory guide.
Review instructions as the project changes
Commands, architecture, and team conventions can change, leaving old guidance misleading. Anthropic recommends reviewing memory files regularly. When a command stops working or an instruction no longer reflects the codebase, update or remove it rather than adding another rule that contradicts it. Treat CLAUDE.md as maintained project documentation, not a one-time configuration.
