If Dementium II HD opens to a black screen, will not launch, or crashes, start by checking whether the problem is tied to a high-resolution exclusive-fullscreen setting. PCGamingWiki documents -popupwindow as a windowed-mode workaround for a specific display limitation: the game cannot run in exclusive fullscreen above 2560×1440. It is not a universal crash fix. If that condition does not match your issue, use the Steam-level checks below and note exactly when the failure occurs.
This guide covers the 2013 Steam PC release, Dementium II HD, not the original Nintendo DS game. Steam lists the game’s minimum requirements for Windows XP/Vista/7, but those historical requirements do not guarantee compatibility with a current PC or Windows installation.

Try the documented black-screen workaround if you use high-resolution fullscreen
PCGamingWiki reports that Dementium II HD cannot run in exclusive fullscreen at resolutions above 2560×1440 and documents -popupwindow as a way to start it in windowed mode. Treat this as a targeted workaround, not a confirmed remedy for every black screen or crash. A black screen by itself does not establish that resolution or fullscreen mode is the cause.
- Check whether the game was set to exclusive fullscreen above 2560×1440. If it was not, this documented limitation may not apply.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Dementium II HD, choose Properties, and enter
-popupwindowin Launch Options. - Launch the game. If it becomes visible, open its display settings and try a supported resolution or window mode.
- If the option makes no difference, remove
-popupwindowand continue with the checks below. The documented workaround does not claim to fix crashes caused by other issues.

Check Steam’s installation and restart before changing more settings
If the resolution workaround does not fit your symptoms, begin with basic Steam troubleshooting. These are general diagnostic steps; the available sources do not establish them as game-specific fixes.
#1 Best Overall
- Detailed 3D Tokens Compatible with Cthulhu: Death May Die
- 117-piece set: 60 tokens for the base game, 21 Elder Ones tokens and 36 for Season 2 expansion
- Enhance the gaming experience and enrich the atmosphere
- Easy to grip and colour
- PLA Bioplastic - an environmentally friendly and durable material
- Exit Steam and restart your PC, then open Steam and try the game again.
- In Steam Library, right-click Dementium II HD and open Properties. Go to Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to finish, then launch the game.
- If you added launch options while troubleshooting, remove options that did not help and test again.
- Record when the failure occurs: before any window appears, at a black screen, after the menu, or during a repeatable gameplay transition. Note whether it happens every time or intermittently.
Use the symptom to narrow the next step
These conditions help describe and narrow the failure; they are not independently validated diagnoses.
- Black screen only with high-resolution exclusive fullscreen: Try the documented
-popupwindowworkaround above. - Black screen at a standard resolution or in windowed mode: The cited fullscreen limitation does not establish the cause. Run the Steam file check and record the exact launch stage.
- Crash before the menu: Note whether a game window appears and capture any error text. The historical patch notes do not identify a current universal startup-crash fix.
- Crash after the menu or during play: Record the action or transition that reliably precedes it, along with whether the crash repeats or occurs intermittently. A single recent community report of crashes during play does not establish a common cause or remedy.
What the old patch notes can—and cannot—tell you
The developer-pinned Steam thread records fixes from the game’s release period. A December 20, 2013 update addressed display settings that failed to apply or reverted, along with a performance issue in the hotel. The January 7, 2014 v1.266 notes added Alt+Enter windowed mode and fixes for 2560×1200 resolution. The initial notice also said a small number of users had crashes under investigation and asked affected players to provide DxDiag details.
Those notes show that display and stability problems were reported and addressed historically. They do not establish that an old patch note resolves a present-day crash or that one workaround applies to every system. The pinned notice says, “One thing that is always a big help is if you can provide your DxDiag along with the issue you are experiencing.” Its request is historical; do not assume contact details in that old post are still active.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to include when contacting support
Steam provides a game-specific technical-support route from the Dementium II HD Steam page. Steam’s support listing also gives [email protected] and a customer-support website, but their current availability has not been verified. Prefer the Steam support flow if those details appear stale or an email bounces.
Make a support request easier to investigate by including:
- Where the failure happens: before a window appears, at a black screen, after the menu, or during a specific gameplay event.
- Your Windows version, GPU model and driver version, and display resolution.
- Whether you use exclusive fullscreen or windowed mode, and any launch options you tried.
- The exact error text, whether the problem is repeatable, and the game version shown on the main menu if you can reach it.
- DxDiag details, as requested in the historical developer-pinned notice.
Steam’s listed requirements are historical, not a compatibility guarantee
Steam lists the following requirements for the 2013 release. They are the store’s published specifications, not a current benchmark or assurance that the game will work on a particular modern PC. Steam separately notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024; that client note does not update the game’s listed operating-system requirements.
