Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no confirmed, universal fix for Deadlock stuttering specifically during reload animations. The useful approach is to treat the timing as a diagnostic clue: determine whether the hitch occurs on every reload, only when an effect appears for the first time, only in live matches, or only while an overlay is active. Then change one variable at a time and record the result.
Deadlock has shipped client-performance work aimed at shader-related hitches, and players have reported possible overlay and system-specific workarounds. Those reports are leads, not guarantees. The steps below separate documented Valve guidance from anecdotal fixes and show how to collect evidence for a reproducible report.

What the reload hitch can—and cannot—tell you
A frame drop that arrives during a reload animation may be caused by several different events that happen at nearly the same time: a first-use visual effect, shader compilation, an overlay hook, a rendering-setting interaction, or a broader CPU/GPU or driver problem. The animation itself is not proof that the reload code is defective.
Start by writing down the exact pattern. Use the same weapon, map area and camera angle for each comparison where possible. Record whether the hitch is a single freeze, a short frametime spike, or a sustained FPS reduction. Also note whether audio continues, whether the input briefly stops responding, and whether the problem disappears after the effect has been seen several times.

| Observed pattern | What it may indicate | Best next comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Only the first time a particular ability or visual effect appears | A first-use asset or shader event is plausible, but not proven. | Repeat the same effect after it has already appeared; compare the first match after launch with a later match. |
| Every reload, even after repeated tests | A persistent rendering, overlay or performance interaction is more likely than a one-time compilation event. | Disable one overlay and repeat the same reload; then test one graphics change. |
| Only in live matches | Networked activity, match scale or live-only effects may be involved. | Compare a bot match and Explore NYC using the same settings. |
| Also present in other games | The issue may extend beyond Deadlock. | Check system temperatures, background software and other games before treating it as Deadlock-specific. |
| Starts after playing for a while | A changing system load, background process or resource condition is possible. | Compare a fresh launch with a later session and note what changed. |
Do not infer a cause from one successful or unsuccessful attempt. The goal is a repeatable contrast: the same scenario with one setting, overlay or context changed.
What Valve has documented about shader-related hitches
Deadlock’s official Map Rework Update, published February 25, 2025, lists client-performance work and says: “Improve how we preload units to prevent shader compilation during gameplay.” This confirms that the game has addressed a class of shader-compilation hitch, but it does not establish that every current reload-animation stutter is shader-related or that every PC is unaffected.
That distinction matters. If a reload hitch happens only the first time a character, ability or effect is displayed, shader or asset preparation is a reasonable hypothesis. If the hitch repeats on every reload after extensive play, the update note alone does not explain it. There is no numerical FPS or frametime improvement published in that update, so claims such as “this removes 20 percent of stutter” are not supported.

- Record the build and system. Note the Deadlock version or update name, Windows version, CPU, GPU, display resolution, refresh rate and graphics settings. Include the rendering API currently selected.
- Choose one repeatable scene. Use the same weapon and reload in a safe area, then repeat in the mode where the problem normally appears. If possible, capture a short video showing the reload and the frametime graph.
- Count the occurrences. Test at least several reloads rather than relying on one attempt. Write down whether the first attempt differs from later attempts.
- Separate contexts. Mark whether the test is in a live match, a bot match or Explore NYC, and whether it is the first game after launching Deadlock.
- List active overlays and background tools. Include chat, recording, monitoring and GPU-control overlays. Do not change all of them at once.
This baseline is also what makes a support report useful: another person can reproduce the same trigger instead of receiving only “FPS drops during reloads.”
Test overlays without guessing
Overlay hooks can interact with a game renderer, so an overlay comparison is a low-risk diagnostic step. A player in the Deadlock Official Forums thread “FPS inconsistent after updates,” posted March 22, 2026, reported improved performance after disabling the Discord overlay. That is a single player account, not an official diagnosis or guaranteed fix.
How to make the comparison
- Leave Deadlock’s graphics settings unchanged.
- Disable one in-game overlay, starting with the one active when the hitch occurs.
- Restart Deadlock if the overlay software requires a restart for the setting to apply.
- Repeat the identical reload test in the same context and for the same number of attempts.
- Re-enable the overlay and repeat once more if you need to verify that the difference follows the setting.
Test one overlay at a time. If performance changes only when a particular overlay is disabled, report that specific contrast. If there is no change, restore the overlay and move to the next variable rather than leaving unrelated features disabled.

One report in the Deadlock Official Forums thread “Major lag with shader compilation,” posted June 18, 2026 and edited June 23, 2026, describes freezes when abilities were seen for the first time. The player said the issue became less frequent as those effects were encountered, but also said that clearing the AMD driver cache and verifying game files did not prevent every later shader hitch. This is anecdotal evidence from one Windows 11 PC.

A safe first-use comparison
- Launch the game and note whether the first occurrence of a particular effect causes the largest hitch.
- Encounter that same effect again without changing settings.
- Compare the first game after launch with a later game.
- Repeat on a different ability or visual effect to see whether the pattern follows “first exposure” generally or only one asset.
If the hitch fades after an effect has appeared, record that fact; it supports a first-use hypothesis but does not prove a shader is the cause. If it returns every time, describe it as a repeatable reload hitch instead.
Verifying files or clearing a driver cache may be suggested in player discussions, but the report above explicitly says those actions did not prevent every later hitch. Do not present either step as a confirmed cure, and do not repeatedly delete caches when the controlled test shows no benefit.
Compare rendering settings one at a time
Changing the graphics API, resolution or other rendering option can reveal an interaction, but the result is system-dependent. In the forum thread “Frametime stuttering/lag after Old Gods update,” begun February 18, 2026, a Valve developer asked for diagnostic information while a player reported stutter. In another discussion, a player said trying Vulkan made stuttering worse. These accounts do not justify prescribing Vulkan, another API or a launch option to everyone.

Controlled graphics test
- Keep the overlay state and game mode constant.
- Change only one item, such as resolution or the available rendering API.
- Restart the game if the option requires it.
- Repeat the same reload sequence and record frametime behavior, not just the average FPS.
- Revert the change immediately if the hitch worsens, visual quality becomes unacceptable or the result is inconclusive.
A lower resolution can reduce GPU workload, but it cannot identify a CPU or overlay problem by itself. Conversely, a different API may alter shader behavior without improving a system bottleneck. Treat every setting as an experiment, not a prescription.

Use game modes to isolate live-match factors
Deadlock’s different contexts can separate a renderer problem from a match-specific trigger. Test the same settings in Explore NYC, a bot match and a live match when practical.
- Explore NYC: useful for a repeatable environment with fewer live-match variables.
- Bot match: helps determine whether the hitch appears during a match without the full set of human-player activity.
- Live match: confirms whether the symptom affects the context in which you actually play.
If the reload hitch occurs in all three, prioritize rendering, overlays and system scope. If it appears only in live matches, include that boundary in a report instead of claiming that every reload is affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check whether Deadlock is the only application affected
Run a brief comparison with another demanding game or 3D application using a repeatable action. You are not looking for a benchmark score; you are checking scope.
- If other applications show similar frametime spikes, investigate system-level background activity, drivers, temperatures and power behavior before blaming the reload animation.
- If only Deadlock reproduces the problem, keep the report focused on the game build, scene, rendering API and overlays.
- If the symptom begins only after a long session, document the elapsed time and what applications were opened or closed.
A system-wide diagnosis may require information not available in the game forums. Avoid global file-permission changes, operating-system-update removal or undocumented launch options; the reviewed reports do not establish those actions as safe or broadly effective fixes.
Best Value
Prepare a useful report for a persistent stutter
For a reproducible issue, the most valuable next step may be evidence collection rather than another random setting change. In the February 18, 2026 forum discussion, a Valve developer identified as JasperP wrote: “Can you take a PerfView trace to help us isolate the issue?” The same reply requested the operating system, CPU and GPU.
Follow the current instructions in that forum thread for any trace. Do not upload diagnostic files publicly if a developer asks for them privately. A concise report should include:
- Deadlock build or update name and the date you tested.
- Operating system version.
- CPU and GPU models.
- Graphics API, resolution and relevant graphics settings.
- Display refresh rate, if frametime behavior is being compared with a cap or sync setting.
- Whether Discord or another overlay was enabled.
- The exact action: for example, “reload with weapon X after ability Y appears,” rather than only “reload stutters.”
- Whether the hitch happens on the first exposure, every reload, after a long session or only in a specific mode.
- Results from the overlay, rendering-setting and game-mode comparisons.
- Whether other games or applications show the same behavior.
If you can reproduce the issue, add a short capture with the frametime graph visible and state how many attempts produced the hitch. The purpose is to let developers distinguish a one-time preparation event from a repeatable frame-time spike.
How to interpret common outcomes
| Result | Reasonable interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Disabling one overlay removes the hitch | The overlay is a plausible contributor on that system. | Keep it disabled while playing, or report the before/after comparison; do not claim the result applies to all PCs. |
| First exposure is worst, later exposures improve | Asset or shader preparation is plausible. | Document which effect triggers it and whether it still occurs after repeated exposure. |
| A different API makes it worse | The change is unsuitable for that configuration. | Revert it and include the result in a report. |
| Bot and Explore NYC reproduce it exactly | The issue is less likely to depend solely on live-match activity. | Prioritize renderer, overlay and system-scope comparisons. |
| No change follows any single test | The cause remains unresolved; the tests were still useful if documented. | Collect the requested system details and a trace if forum guidance calls for one. |
What not to do
- Do not promise that a cache clear, file verification, API switch or overlay change is a universal cure.
- Do not change several graphics options simultaneously; you will not know which change affected the result.
- Do not publish an FPS percentage or benchmark improvement. The official update provides no numerical stutter reduction, and no controlled head-to-head test of these workarounds is established.
- Do not use undocumented launch options or console commands as standard advice.
- Do not alter global file permissions or uninstall operating-system updates for this symptom.
- Do not confuse a first-use hitch with a reload bug unless repeated testing shows that reloads themselves are the consistent trigger.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Describe the trigger: every reload, first effect, particular ability or no consistent action.
- Record the mode: live match, bot match or Explore NYC.
- Record whether it is the first game after launch or a later session.
- Write down the OS, CPU, GPU, game build, API, resolution and graphics settings.
- Repeat the same scenario several times and note frametime, not only average FPS.
- Disable one overlay and retest; restore it if there is no measurable difference.
- Change one rendering setting at a time and revert anything that worsens the result.
- Check whether another game shows similar hitches.
- Capture the before/after result and, for persistent cases, follow the forum’s PerfView and reporting guidance.
Bottom line on reload-animation frame drops
The evidence supports a disciplined diagnosis, not a magic setting. Deadlock has documented work to reduce shader compilation during gameplay, and individual players have reported changes after disabling an overlay or altering rendering settings. Those observations vary by system and include reports where common cache or file checks did not stop later hitches. Identify the exact pattern, compare one variable at a time, and give Valve a reproducible report when the problem persists.
