Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe fastest way to fix Hogwarts Legacy problems on PC is to troubleshoot in a controlled order: confirm your hardware against the published requirements, update the game, keep it on DirectX 12, test a lower frame-rate target or resolution, remove recently changed visual mods, and verify the installation. Only investigate HAGS (Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling) when your symptoms match the specific frame-generation crash addressed by a July 2024 hotfix.
Hogwarts Legacy is the open-world action RPG developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games. It launched on PC on February 10, 2023. The steps below separate crashes, traversal stutter, and consistently low frame rates, because each symptom points to a different likely cause.

Start by recording what is actually failing
Before changing settings, write down the details of one reproducible incident. This prevents random changes from hiding the cause and gives official support something actionable if you need to escalate.
- CPU model, graphics card model and VRAM, installed RAM, and Windows version.
- Storefront and game build: Steam, Epic Games Store, or the Windows Store/Xbox PC app.
- Display resolution, current frame-rate cap, graphics preset, ray tracing state, and whether frame generation is enabled.
- Whether visual mods, reshades, texture replacements, or a mod manager are installed.
- When the issue occurs: at launch, while loading a save, during fast travel, in a particular area, after a long session, or randomly.
- The exact error text, if Windows or the game displays one.
Record one repeatable scene as a baseline, such as the same corridor, village street, or combat encounter. Change one setting at a time and return to that scene before deciding whether a change helped. Note whether the symptom is a brief hitch, a sustained frame-rate drop, or a complete application exit; those are different failure patterns.

Check the PC against Hogwarts Legacy’s published requirements
Steam publishes two hardware tiers. They are specifications for the game, not independent benchmark results or a promise that every system will sustain the listed frame rate. The minimum and recommended notes also target different image quality and frame-rate combinations, so they are not a like-for-like performance comparison.
| Specification | Minimum tier | Recommended tier |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 960 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4 GB | NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 85 GB available space | 85 GB available space |
| Published target note | 720p at 30 fps on Low settings | 1080p at 60 fps on High settings |
An SSD is preferred, while an HDD is supported. A system below the minimum tier can experience long loading, traversal hitching, or unstable performance, but the requirements alone do not prove that a particular component caused a crash. Conversely, meeting the recommended tier does not guarantee a locked 60 fps in every location.
Read the two tiers as separate targets
The CPU and graphics-card gap between the tiers is substantial, while the listed memory requirement is 16 GB in both. That means moving from 16 GB to more memory is not automatically the right answer when the game stutters. First determine whether the graphics card, processor, storage behavior, or a software conflict matches the symptom. The 4 GB VRAM listed for the minimum cards is also not a promise that every modern visual option will run smoothly; the minimum target is 720p and Low settings, not 1080p and High.
Recommended Free Tools
Likewise, 85 GB is the listed available-space requirement for both tiers. Keep enough free space for the installation and updates, but do not assume that buying a larger drive alone will cure a crash. The published preference for an SSD can make loading and streaming behavior worth testing, while the fact that an HDD is supported means storage type by itself does not identify the cause.
What an upgrade can and cannot prove
Do not buy a graphics card, more RAM, an SSD, or a cooling accessory simply because the game stutters. First compare your system with the table and identify a measured bottleneck. For example, an under-specification GPU is a reason to investigate a GPU upgrade; it is not evidence that a machine meeting the requirements needs one. A crash caused by a mod or a damaged installation will not be repaired by replacing hardware.
Update the game and identify the current build
Let your storefront finish every pending download before testing. Then note the installed version and compare the symptom with official patch notes for that platform. Hogwarts Legacy has received fixes across several years, but a historical fix should not be treated as proof that a current build has exactly the same defect.

Why the date of a fix matters
- March 2023 updates: addressed issues involving streaming, memory leaks, VRAM use on lower-memory graphics cards, and performance drops during long sessions.
- July 2024 hotfix: fixed a specific memory-leak and invalid-pointer crash scenario involving HAGS and graphics cards that support frame generation.
- January 2025 PC notes: identified visual third-party mods as a possible crash source after engine changes.
- October 2025 notes: recorded general performance improvements plus particular stability and mod fixes.
These notes establish what a particular build changed. They do not establish that every configuration is now free of the same class of crash or stutter. If your problem started immediately after an update, test with all third-party modifications removed before drawing conclusions about the patch.
Keep the game on DirectX 12
Portkey Games’ PC FAQ states: “Launching Hogwarts Legacy requires DirectX Version 12.” Do not force a DirectX 11 launch option as a generic troubleshooting step. The publisher does not recommend DX11 workarounds because they can affect launch stability and the player experience.
Confirm that Windows and your graphics driver expose DirectX 12, then launch the game normally through your storefront. If the game will not start, record the error and the point at which it stops instead of switching APIs repeatedly; that information is more useful for support.
Use frame rate and resolution as reversible diagnostic tests
Frame-rate and resolution changes are tests, not guaranteed cures. The official FAQ says that a lower target frame rate may reduce stuttering and that changing target resolution can affect performance depending on the hardware.
- Set a conservative frame-rate target below your current target.
- Keep the same graphics preset and revisit the baseline scene you recorded.
- If stutter remains, lower the target resolution or render resolution while leaving other options unchanged.
- Compare frame pacing and hitching in the same scene, then restore the last setting that did not help before testing another variable.
If reducing the target frame rate makes traversal smoother, the system may be struggling to maintain the original target rather than suffering a crash defect. If lowering resolution produces a large improvement, graphics workload is a likely constraint. If neither test changes the symptom, continue with installation and mod checks instead of continually lowering image quality.

Separate low average FPS from stutter
- Consistently low FPS: the frame rate stays below target in most scenes. Resolution, preset, or hardware capability is the first area to test.
- Short hitches while moving: frame rate may be acceptable until the game streams a new area. Storage, streaming behavior, memory pressure, or a patch-specific issue may be involved.
- Performance that worsens over a long session: note the session length. Earlier updates specifically addressed memory leaks and long-session drops, so the build and exact reproduction time matter.
- A sudden application exit: treat it as a crash investigation. A frame-rate cap alone is unlikely to fix a damaged file or incompatible visual mod.
Remove visual mods before verifying the files
If the crash or severe stutter began after installing or updating a visual mod, remove the affected visual mods and any associated mod manager first. Portkey Games warns that engine changes can affect visual mods; its January 2025 PC notes also list visual third-party mods as a possible crash cause.

Do not leave a mod partially installed while testing. Remove the mod files according to the mod author’s uninstall instructions, disable the manager, and launch an unmodified copy. Keep a backup of save files before changing a heavily modified installation. A clean test is especially important when an update changed the engine, because a mod that worked on an earlier build may fail without any hardware change.
Verify the installation
After removing affected mods, use your storefront’s built-in verification or repair function. Verification replaces missing or altered official files without requiring a full reinstall in many cases.
- Steam: open Library, right-click Hogwarts Legacy, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Store: open the game’s management menu in your Library and use its Verify command. Exact labels can vary with the launcher version.
- Windows Store/Xbox PC app: open the game’s app management page and use the available Verify or Repair option. The label and location can vary by Windows and Xbox app version.
Launch once with no visual mods after verification. Reinstall only if verification fails to resolve the problem or reports that required files cannot be repaired. Reinstalling before removing a conflicting mod can simply recreate the same failure.
Consider HAGS only for the documented crash pattern
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling should not be treated as a universal Hogwarts Legacy fix. The July 2024 hotfix addressed a particular memory-leak and invalid-pointer crash scenario involving HAGS and graphics cards that support frame generation.
Investigate that setting only when your system has the relevant frame-generation capability and your crash resembles that documented pattern, especially if the problem began around the affected period. The existence of the hotfix does not establish that disabling HAGS improves every PC, and changing it unnecessarily adds another variable to a troubleshooting session. If you do test it, record the original setting so you can undo the change and compare the same reproducible scene or crash sequence.
Use the symptom and timing to choose the next branch
The game crashes before the main menu
- Confirm Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12 support, and the minimum requirements.
- Update the game through the storefront.
- Remove all visual mods and mod managers.
- Verify the installation.
- Record the exact error, build, graphics driver version, and whether the crash occurs before or after a particular splash screen.
Do not force DX11. If an unmodified, verified installation still fails at launch, move to official support with the collected details.

The game crashes when loading a save or entering an area
Test a different save or location only as a diagnostic comparison. If one save or one area consistently triggers the crash, record the location, quest state, and loading action. A crash that began after a visual mod update should be tested first with those mods removed and the files verified.

The game stutters while exploring
Use the lower-target-frame-rate and resolution tests, then compare the same route with an unmodified installation. Note whether the hitch occurs during area streaming, fast travel, or after a long session. An SSD is preferred by the published requirements, but an HDD is supported; storage alone is not proof of the cause.
The frame rate is low everywhere
Compare your CPU, GPU, VRAM, and RAM with the published tier. Test a lower resolution and target frame rate. If the system is below the minimum or cannot sustain the recommended target, an upgrade may be appropriate only after identifying whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance.
Performance degrades after playing for a long time
Measure how long it takes for the problem to appear and whether restarting the game temporarily restores performance. Earlier March 2023 notes addressed memory leaks and long-session performance drops, so confirm your current build before applying advice written for the launch version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not force DirectX 11 as a blanket fix; DirectX 12 is required.
- Do not assume that meeting recommended specifications guarantees 1080p/60 fps in every scene.
- Do not disable HAGS for every crash; the documented hotfix concerned a specific frame-generation and invalid-pointer scenario.
- Do not verify files while leaving a suspected visual mod active and then conclude that the game files are clean.
- Do not buy hardware before confirming that the machine is under specification or that a measured bottleneck matches the symptom.
- Do not treat a fix from an older patch as proof that the current build has the same defect.
When to contact official support
Contact Warner Bros. customer support through the support route identified on the game’s Steam technical-support page when an up-to-date, unmodified, verified installation still crashes or performs abnormally. Include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, Windows version, and display resolution.
- Storefront, game build, graphics driver version, and whether frame generation or ray tracing is enabled.
- Mod status, including what was removed and whether verification completed successfully.
- Exact crash timing, location, quest or save involved, error text, and how long the game had been running.
- The comparison results from your frame-rate-target and resolution tests.
This information lets support distinguish a launch failure, a damaged installation, a mod conflict, a hardware-limit problem, and a build-specific stability issue without asking you to repeat random setting changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Hogwarts Legacy keep crashing on PC?
The cause can be a damaged installation, an incompatible visual mod, a build-specific defect, or a system below the published requirements. Record when the crash occurs, remove visual mods, verify the files, and compare the current build with official patch notes before changing hardware.
Is 16 GB of RAM enough for Hogwarts Legacy?
Steam lists 16 GB for both the minimum and recommended tiers. That specification does not guarantee a locked frame rate, and adding RAM is not automatically the answer to a crash or stutter. Identify a measured memory bottleneck first.
Should I force DirectX 11 to stop crashes?
No. Portkey Games says launching Hogwarts Legacy requires DirectX 12 and does not recommend DX11 workarounds because they can affect launch stability and the player experience.
Can lowering resolution fix stuttering?
It can be a useful diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cure. Test a lower target frame rate first, then lower resolution while keeping other settings unchanged and comparing the same scene.
Should everyone disable HAGS?
No. The July 2024 hotfix addressed a specific memory-leak and invalid-pointer crash involving HAGS and frame-generation-capable graphics cards. Consider the setting only when your hardware and symptoms match that pattern.
Do I need an SSD?
Steam prefers an SSD but supports an HDD. An SSD may be worth testing for streaming or loading hitches, but storage type alone does not prove the cause and does not justify a purchase without a diagnosed bottleneck.
When should I upgrade my graphics card or processor?
Only after confirming that the system is below the published tier or that measurements show a specific CPU or GPU limit. Requirements are not proof that a particular component caused your crash.
What should I send Warner Bros. support?
Provide your hardware, Windows version, storefront and game build, driver version, mod status, exact error and timing, affected location or save, session length, and the results of frame-rate and resolution tests.
The Bottom Line
Start with facts, not purchases: compare your PC with Steam’s minimum and recommended tiers, update to the current build, keep DirectX 12, and test one frame-rate or resolution change at a time. If a visual mod preceded the problem, remove it before verifying the files. Reserve HAGS testing for the documented frame-generation crash pattern, and contact Warner Bros. support with complete reproduction details when a clean, verified installation still fails.
