Work through the problem in order: confirm the game’s PC requirements, check whether the issue affects one game or the whole system, verify Steam files if the game crashes or content is missing, then test drivers, graphics settings, background software, and hardware conditions. Change one thing at a time and retest the same activity. There is no guaranteed FPS gain from any single step, and these instructions do not apply identically to every game, launcher, operating system, or console.
First, identify what is going wrong
Low average frame rate and intermittent stuttering are different symptoms: the first means performance is consistently slow, while the second feels like brief hitches during play. A crash is a separate failure. The checks below can help narrow down likely causes, but symptoms alone do not establish whether the game, driver, software, or hardware is responsible.

- One game only: Start with that game’s current requirements, files, settings, and official support guidance.
- Several games or other apps too: Look for a system-wide cause such as resource pressure, driver trouble, or heat before considering an upgrade.
- Record a repeatable test: Note the game, location or activity, symptom, and settings. Retest in the same situation after each change so you can tell whether it helped.
Check the game’s requirements before changing hardware
Compare your PC with the current requirements listed by the game’s store or publisher. Steam cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee high FPS; requirements are a starting point, not a performance promise. Bethesda likewise begins its Starfield PC performance guidance by asking players to confirm the game’s minimum requirements.
Check storage requirements and installation recommendations too. Bethesda recommends installing Starfield on an SSD rather than a hard disk drive. That is guidance for Starfield PC, not proof that an SSD will cure crashes or low FPS in every RPG; check the requirements and compatibility for your own game and PC.

For Steam crashes or missing content, verify the installed files
Steam says file verification can help when a game crashes or is missing textures or other content. Its instructions are for Steam installations:
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish. It may take several minutes.
Steam notes that files failing verification may be local configuration files, which can be normal. Avoid running verification while other system-intensive work is underway. See Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files instructions.
Check drivers, GPU selection, and power behavior
Make sure the video driver is current using guidance appropriate to your GPU and operating system. Driver installation and clean resets differ by vendor and game, so do not treat one game’s reset procedure as universal.

On a laptop with more than one GPU, confirm the game is using the primary graphics processor rather than integrated graphics. Power-saving behavior can affect GPU selection; Bethesda calls this out in its Starfield performance guidance. Check the game-specific support instructions and your system’s power and graphics settings before changing them.
Test graphics settings and background software one at a time
Resolution and graphics options affect performance, and unnecessary background applications can consume memory or other resources. Close apps you do not need, then lower or adjust a demanding graphics setting or resolution and retest. For Starfield, Bethesda also suggests disabling Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar as a performance check.
- Change one setting or close one background app at a time.
- Retest the same location or activity you used before the change.
- Keep a change only if it makes a useful, repeatable difference; restore it if it does not.
Steam’s software performance troubleshooting covers requirements, memory, drivers, background tasks, resolution, and settings. These checks do not guarantee a specific FPS increase.

If hitches persist, check heat and memory pressure
Heat, airflow, and memory pressure can contribute to slowdowns or repeated hitches, according to Steam’s hardware performance troubleshooting. Check that the PC has adequate airflow and that other applications are not placing avoidable load on the system. Do not infer a particular temperature problem from stuttering alone; the guidance does not set a universal temperature threshold.

Bethesda’s advanced troubleshooting path for Starfield PC includes testing with a new Windows profile, clean or factory resetting the GPU driver, and avoiding conflicts from running Xbox app and Steam simultaneously. These are escalation checks for the documented Starfield support scenario, not required steps for every RPG. Follow the game’s current official instructions before changing Windows profiles or resetting a driver: Advanced Troubleshooting – Crashing/Freezing on PC – Starfield.
When an upgrade is justified
Consider hardware only after comparing the exact game’s requirements with your PC and identifying a real shortfall. Steam names graphics card or memory upgrades as possible options when a system does not meet requirements; Bethesda’s SSD recommendation is specific to Starfield PC. These address different needs, are not interchangeable, and are not guaranteed fixes. Check component compatibility with your PC before buying.
