If DOOM: The Dark Ages crashes or runs poorly on PC, first check that your system meets the game’s ray-tracing-capable hardware requirements. Then work through the matching launch or performance steps below: restart the game and launcher, check GPU selection and drivers, disable overlays, and repair game files. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes; Bethesda says many performance problems are hardware-related.
Check the PC requirements before troubleshooting
Bethesda requires a hardware ray-tracing-compatible GPU even at the minimum specification. Its published tiers are targets, not guarantees of performance on every system. Bethesda’s requirements page does not show a publication date in the retrieved text.

| Tier and target | CPU | GPU | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum: 1080p, 60 FPS, Low | AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th Generation; 8 cores/16 threads at 3.2 GHz or better | Ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU; at least 8 GB dedicated VRAM | 16 GB RAM | NVMe storage; 100 GB available |
| Recommended: 1440p, 60 FPS, High | AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th Generation; 8 cores/16 threads at 3.2 GHz or better | Ray-tracing-capable GPU; at least 10 GB dedicated VRAM | 32 GB RAM | NVMe storage; 100 GB available |
| Ultra 4K: 2160p, 60 FPS, Ultra | Same CPU generation and core class stated for Recommended | Ray-tracing-capable GPU; at least 16 GB dedicated VRAM | 32 GB RAM | NVMe storage; 100 GB available |
These specifications are from Bethesda’s PC system requirements. If your PC falls below minimum—particularly on GPU ray-tracing capability, dedicated VRAM, or NVMe storage—software changes may not make the game playable. Bethesda recommends NVMe storage for performance troubleshooting; an NVMe drive is not a guaranteed fix for crashes or unrelated performance causes.

If the game will not launch or crashes immediately
- Restart the launcher and Windows. Fully exit and reopen Steam, the Xbox app for PC, or Battle.net, then restart the PC. This clears a stuck launch process and gives you a clean test.
- Make sure the game uses the intended GPU. On a laptop especially, check Windows graphics settings or the GPU control panel and assign the game to the discrete, high-performance GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Check GPU driver guidance for your hardware and game build. Bethesda’s support pages list AMD 25.5.1 and NVIDIA 576.40 as baselines, but later official Steam announcement material gives different NVIDIA advice. Those support-page numbers are not necessarily current: check the latest Bethesda launch guidance, your GPU vendor’s release notes, and the game’s official Steam announcements before changing drivers. Do not treat a version number from an older support page as a universal requirement.
- Check DirectX runtime files. Bethesda says reinstalling the required DirectX runtime files may resolve some launch cases. Use Microsoft’s official guidance and avoid downloading runtime files from unofficial sites.
- Verify or repair the installation. Use the installed platform’s file verification or repair option. If you added mods, remove them; Bethesda’s launch guidance advises reinstalling and then repairing the game again when mods may be involved.
- Check security and administrator settings. Bethesda suggests adding the game to antivirus exclusions. Follow your security vendor’s instructions and do not disable protection broadly. If you change administrator settings, use the game or launcher’s supported Windows options and undo the change if it does not help.
- Disable overlays for a test. Turn off Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar, then try launching again. Bethesda also mentions Windows Game Mode as an alternative to investigate Steam-related overlay or performance problems.
If the game launches but performs poorly
- Check the install drive and requirements. Confirm that the game is installed on NVMe storage and that the drive has the required 100 GB available. Bethesda recommends NVMe rather than a hard disk drive; changing drives alone cannot address every cause of low frame rates.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Bethesda’s performance guidance recommends enabling this Windows setting. The exact menu location can vary by Windows version; search Settings for “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling,” enable it if available, and restart if Windows prompts you.
- Close background applications and disable overlays. For a controlled comparison, disable Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays or capture tools, then close unnecessary applications that use memory or GPU resources.
- Check GPU and power selection. Confirm the game uses the primary/high-performance GPU and an appropriate power profile. If you are testing on a laptop, connect it to power when practical; power-saving behavior can switch games to integrated graphics or limit performance.
- Lower graphics quality or restore the detected settings. Reduce in-game quality settings to see whether performance improves. If the issue began after changing graphics options, restore the auto-detected settings. Steam users can also try launching in Safe Mode, as Bethesda recommends.
- Verify files and check drivers and DirectX. Repair the installation through your platform, check current GPU-vendor driver guidance for your card and game version, and check DirectX components if the problem remains.
- Test a clean Windows user profile if the other steps fail. Bethesda suggests trying a new Windows user profile. If the game works there, its selective-startup instructions can help identify a conflicting program in the original profile.
Bethesda’s performance article says, “Most issues related to game performance can be attributed to hardware.” That is a reason to compare your PC with the published requirements, not proof that every slowdown is caused by a component. See Bethesda’s performance troubleshooting steps for its full checklist.

Use a workaround only when its symptom matches
Bethesda’s troubleshooting guide describes several conditional workarounds. They are not universal fixes:
- Game launches in the background after Alt-Tab during startup: For the listed NVIDIA issue, avoid Alt-Tab while the game is launching. If it occurs, restart the PC.
- Crash when OBS is running in the background: Close OBS before launching the game.
- OBS capture freezes after Alt-Tab from Fullscreen: Use Windowed or Borderless display mode as the documented workaround.
- Instability with MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner overlays: Do not run either in the background while playing.
- Invisible game window but audio is audible: For the display configurations covered by the guide, Steam users can try the launch options
+r_mode -1 +r_fullscreen 0. For Battle.net or the Xbox app for PC, force quit the app and turn on all connected monitors before relaunching. - Freeze after Alt-Tab with an NVIDIA 50-series GPU, driver 576.40, and FSR Frame Generation in Fullscreen: The guide advises avoiding frequent Alt-Tab, switching to Borderless, or disabling FSR Frame Generation. This applies to the specific hardware, driver, and setting combination named by Bethesda, not all NVIDIA systems.
- Crashes after a recent AMD driver update: Later official Steam announcement material suggests reinstalling the driver and choosing its factory-reset option. Check current AMD instructions before reinstalling; driver procedures and advice can change.

When a crash may need specialist support
Bethesda’s guide notes rare persistent launch crashes on supported settings with 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPUs and directs affected users to Intel Customer Support, saying the CPU may be corrupted. That warning is specific to the described cases: a crash alone does not establish CPU damage, and it is not a reason to replace a processor without diagnosis.
If none of the applicable steps help, record the crash behavior, PC components, Windows version, GPU and driver version, game platform, and any recent settings or software changes. Include those details when contacting Bethesda Support; they make it easier to distinguish a compatibility issue from a game-file, driver, or background-software conflict.
