Canon’s EOS R7 offers a documented comparison: it is designed to be dust- and drip-resistant, but Canon explicitly says it is not waterproof. The distinction matters if you are considering an upgrade—or deciding whether to take an M50 outdoors in uncertain weather.
Does the Canon EOS M50 have weather sealing?
Canon’s EOS M50 support and specifications identify it as an APS-C mirrorless camera with an approximately 22.3 × 14.9 mm sensor and approximately 24.1 effective megapixels. The page lists EF-M lenses and EF or EF-S lenses used with an EF-EOS M adapter. It does not specify a weather-resistance rating.

That absence is not a published failure threshold: Canon’s specification page does not say exactly what amount of rain, dust, or moisture the M50 can tolerate. It does mean there is no Canon rating in that source to rely on when planning outdoor use. If weather is uncertain, use a rain cover or other suitable protection, keep the camera sheltered, and avoid exposing it to precipitation or spray.

Canon describes the EOS R7 as designed to be dust- and drip-resistant, while its handling precautions make clear that the phrase is not a promise of waterproofing. Canon’s manual states: “The camera is not waterproof and cannot be used underwater.” It also warns that dust, dirt, water, or salt may still get inside.

- WATERPROOF NYLON BUILT FOR ACTIVE SHOOTING: While most camera rain covers are thin disposable PE plastic sleeves, the Altura Photo rain cover is constructed from durable waterproof nylon that holds its shape around your camera and lens during active use. It delivers maximum protection from rain, snow, salt spray, dust, and sand without collapsing, crinkling, or interfering with your shot. Built for photographers who shoot in real weather, not just emergency backup coverage.
- HAND SLEEVES AND FULL-LENGTH DOUBLE ZIPPER FOR COMPLETE CAMERA ACCESS: Two adjustable hand sleeves let you reach your camera controls, zoom ring, and shutter from both sides without removing the cover. The full-length double zipper runs the entire length of the cover, providing complete access whether you are hand-holding or tripod-mounting your camera. An ultra-clear back window panel keeps your LCD screen and viewfinder fully visible throughout your shoot.
- EXTERIOR HOOK-AND-LOOP STRAP AND INTERIOR ANTI-SLIP RUBBER FOR A WOBBLE-FREE FIT: A newly integrated exterior hook-and-loop strap combined with interior anti-slip rubber grips your lens or lens hood securely, preventing rotation, slipping, or wind-catch during movement. Easy to install and remove in seconds; compatible with most camera and lens configurations supporting lenses up to 8 inches. For best fit and weather performance, use with a dedicated lens hood.
- FITS MOST DSLR AND MIRRORLESS CAMERAS WITH LENSES UP TO 8 INCHES: Compatible with Canon EOS Rebel T6s with EF-S 18-135mm STM, Canon 80D with EF 50mm F/1.8 STM, Canon 7D Mark II with EF 70-300mm, Canon 5D Mark III with EF 24-105mm L, Canon 5D with 70-200mm F/2.8, Nikon D800 with 24-70mm F/2.8, Nikon D4, D750, D500 with AF-S 24-120mm F/4, Nikon D7200, D5500, D3300, D5100, and similar sized cameras and lenses from Sony, Pentax, Sigma, and Tamron. Verify your lens length before ordering; not recommended for smaller cameras with pancake lenses.
- FOLDS FLAT IN YOUR BAG AND SETS UP IN SECONDS: The Altura Photo rain cover packs down completely flat so it takes up virtually no space in your camera bag, making it an effortless addition to any kit for travel, sports, wildlife, and event photographers. Setup is fast enough to respond to sudden weather changes without missing a shot. Compatible with tripod mounting so you can keep shooting hands-free in any conditions, and works with a lens hood attached for added fit and weather protection performance.
Canon advises keeping the camera’s covers firmly closed and attaching the shoe cover to maximize resistance. Those precautions can help preserve the design intent, but they do not establish that the R7 can withstand a particular rainfall intensity or duration. Canon’s documentation does not provide a shared ingress-protection rating or quantified rain-survival statistic for comparing the R7 with the M50.
How do the M50 and R7 compare as outdoor systems?
| Consideration | EOS M50 | EOS R7 |
|---|---|---|
| Canon-stated body protection | No weather-resistance rating is listed on Canon’s reviewed M50 specification page. | Designed to be dust- and drip-resistant; Canon says it is not waterproof and warns contaminants may still enter. See Canon’s handling precautions. |
| Lens mount | EF-M; EF and EF-S lenses can be used with an EF-EOS M adapter. Source: Canon M50 specifications. | RF; EF and EF-S lenses can be used with an EF-EOS R adapter. EF-M lenses are not compatible. Source: Canon R7 specifications. |
| Weight | Not stated in the cited M50 source. | Approximately 530 g body-only or 612 g with battery and card, under Canon’s stated CIPA basis. Source: Canon R7 specifications. |

Will M50 lenses work on the EOS R7?
No. The M50 uses Canon’s EF-M mount and the R7 uses RF. Canon lists EF and EF-S lenses as usable on the R7 with an EF-EOS R adapter, but EF-M lenses are excluded from that compatibility. If you move from an M50 to an R7, factor in replacing EF-M lenses or choosing a separate lens plan; an adapter does not bridge EF-M to the R7.

Does a weather-resistant lens make the M50 weather-sealed?
No. Canon describes dust- and moisture-resistant construction for certain professional lenses, but notes that this does not guarantee complete exclusion of water and dust and that the lens must be attached to a camera body. A lens’s construction is not a weather-resistance specification for the M50 body, and it should not be treated as making the assembled system waterproof. See Canon Europe’s lens durability and weatherproof construction information.
Which should you choose for outdoor photography?
For occasional outdoor photography in dry conditions, the M50 can remain part of your kit, but Canon’s cited specifications do not establish a weather-resistance rating for it. If you routinely work where dust or light moisture is a concern, the R7 has a clearer manufacturer-stated dust- and drip-resistance design, with the limits described above. Neither camera should be treated as waterproof.

Compare the complete system, not just the body. The R7’s RF mount means EF-M lenses do not carry over, and any EF or EF-S lenses you already own require an EF-EOS R adapter. Also weigh the R7’s stated body mass against the lenses and protection you expect to carry. For severe weather, salt spray, or sustained rain, neither Canon’s qualitative R7 claim nor the M50 specification page establishes a safe exposure limit; use dedicated protection and keep the camera sheltered.
