Start by checking whether Windows registers the controller, then test the connection, Steam Input and game-specific settings one layer at a time. This helps distinguish a controller or connection problem from a sports game’s configuration—and avoids changing several settings or buying hardware before you know where the fault lies.
Check whether Windows detects the controller
Close the game, press Windows key + R, type joy.cpl and press Enter to open the Game Controllers panel. Select the controller and open its properties to see whether buttons and stick movement register. EA’s player guide recommends this check as an early way to distinguish a Windows-level input problem from one confined to a game: EA’s Controller Issues: Complete Player Guide.

- No response in the panel: Try a different USB data cable or port, or test another connection mode. If possible, check the controller with another device or game.
- Inputs register in Windows: The controller is communicating with the PC. Check the game’s input settings and any launcher or input-mapping layer next.
For Steam Controller hardware specifically, Steam provides an input test and calibration workflow in Big Picture mode. Steam says calibration adjusts the joystick, track pads and gyro, and recommends completing calibration twice. These steps apply to Steam Controller support; they are not universal calibration instructions for every gamepad. See Steam Controller troubleshooting.

Use a wired connection as a baseline before diagnosing Bluetooth. Try a USB data cable that fits the controller and another USB port. A cable may charge a controller without carrying data, so lack of input over USB does not by itself prove the controller is faulty.

Steam says that port-dependent behavior, intermittent disconnections, an unreliable connection or changed responsiveness can be consistent with USB scheduling or contention issues. If a different port changes the symptom, keep testing that port with the game and other connected USB devices before drawing conclusions; the behavior alone does not identify a single cause. If wired input works but Bluetooth does not, remove old pairings on both the PC and controller, pair again, and test with the controller close to the PC. EA’s guide suggests trying a dedicated USB Bluetooth adapter if built-in Bluetooth remains unreliable. It is a fallback to test, not a guaranteed fix.

Test Steam Input both ways
For a game launched through Steam, test its Steam Input setting in both states. The right choice depends on the game and the selected input style; there is no universal answer in the available support guidance.

- Open the game’s controller properties in Steam.
- Enable Steam Input, launch the game and check whether the controller behaves correctly.
- If it does not, close the game, disable Steam Input for that game, then relaunch and test again.
Restarting between changes makes the comparison clearer. EA’s forum guide recommends trying both settings, while Steam notes that a configuration may fail if the game does not support the chosen input style. See Steam Controller troubleshooting.

Look for duplicate inputs and overlay conflicts
If a button triggers twice, menus move unexpectedly or the game seems to receive conflicting commands, simplify the input setup while testing. Disconnect extra controllers and other input devices temporarily. EA’s guide also recommends checking for duplicate entries, such as XInput and HID, which can indicate that the same controller is being presented through more than one input path.
Temporarily turn off overlays that may interact with the game while you diagnose the issue. EA lists Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, GeForce Experience and RivaTuner as candidates to disable during testing. Treat this as an isolation step, not proof that an overlay caused the problem. Once you have checked whether the symptom changes, re-enable features one at a time.

Find out whether the problem belongs to one game
Try the controller in another game or on another device. If it works there and Windows registers its inputs, focus on the affected sports game’s controller options, launcher settings or game-specific configuration. For EA titles, EA’s guide includes repairing the game through the EA App as a later troubleshooting step.

Use FC Input Overlay to observe inputs during online play
In EA SPORTS FC, Input Overlay can display a controller graphic during online matches so you can monitor the inputs you send and how they are processed. It can help you compare your actions with what appears in the match, but it does not establish whether a delay or mismatch comes from the controller, game or network.
