Control Center problems usually have a simple cause: the wrong edge gesture, access being disabled inside apps, a temporarily frozen iPhone, or a touch-screen fault. Use the steps below in order; they are designed to restore access without erasing your personal data.
Identify what is failing
| Symptom | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Nothing appears | Use the correct gesture, then restart the iPhone. |
| Notification Center appears | Start farther to the right on a Face ID iPhone. |
| It works on the Home Screen but not in apps | Enable Access Within Apps. |
| A familiar control is missing | Edit the Control Center layout. |
| Other taps and gestures also fail | Clean and isolate the display, then consider service. |
| The iPhone is frozen | Force-restart it. |
Use the correct Control Center gesture
iPhones with Face ID
Swipe down from the top-right corner, near the battery and status icons. Starting at the top-center can open Notification Center instead. Put your finger directly on the edge and move downward.

iPhones with a Home button
Swipe up from the bottom edge of the display. A downward swipe is not the Control Center gesture on these models. Apple’s illustrated instructions are in its Control Center guide.

Check access inside apps
If Control Center opens on the Home Screen but not in an Apple or third-party app:

- Tap Control Center.
- Turn on Access Within Apps.
This setting specifically controls whether the panel can be opened while another app is on screen. The wording or location can vary on older iOS releases; Apple documents the current behavior in its iPhone User Guide.
Check Lock Screen behavior separately
Try the gesture after unlocking the iPhone. If it works only when unlocked, the problem may be limited to Lock Screen access or a restriction rather than the touchscreen. Review Control Center access options in Settings, but do not assume every iOS version has the same Lock Screen toggle or label.
Restart the iPhone
A normal restart is preferable when the phone still responds. It does not delete personal data.

Clean and isolate the touchscreen
If the edge swipe is intermittent, or scrolling and typing also fail, treat it as a display-response problem:

- If the issue occurs only while charging, try another cable, charger or outlet.
- Remove the case temporarily.
- Test without the screen protector.
Apple recommends these checks for an unresponsive or intermittent screen at Apple Support.
Update iOS
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update. The version offered depends on your iPhone model and Apple’s release cycle, so the update screen—not a fixed version number—is the reliable source. Apple’s iPhone support hub also recommends updating when troubleshooting iPhone problems.
Restore missing or misplaced controls
On iOS 18 and later, a control may have been removed, moved or resized rather than broken.
- Open Control Center.
- Tap the Add button at the top-left.
- Add, remove, rearrange or resize controls as needed.
- Check any additional Control Center groups by swiping between them.
Control behavior and labels can differ on older iOS versions. The current editing process is described in Apple’s Control Center documentation.

Control Center’s Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth buttons may disconnect from the current network or accessory without completely turning the radios off. Full radio controls are available in Settings.
Use AssistiveTouch as a temporary workaround
If the edge of the screen is difficult to reach, enable Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. The onscreen AssistiveTouch menu can provide a Control Center command without the edge swipe. This is an accessibility feature and a useful short-term workaround while you back up data or arrange service, not a repair. See Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide.
Reset All Settings only after the simpler fixes
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset All Settings.
This can clear conflicting or damaged preferences without deleting photos, messages, apps or documents. It does remove saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings and Apple Pay cards, and may restore accessibility, display, privacy, location, sound and Face ID preferences to defaults. Apple Watch pairings may also need to be restored.
Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings as a routine Control Center fix; that option erases the iPhone. Details are in Apple’s Reset All Settings guidance and iPhone User Guide.
Recovery mode is a last resort
If iOS cannot be updated normally, recovery mode can let Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows attempt an update. Try Update before Restore. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases the device, so make a backup whenever the phone is usable. Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Notification Center open instead of Control Center?
On a Face ID iPhone, begin at the top-right corner rather than the top-center. The top-center gesture can open Notification Center.
Can a screen protector stop Control Center from opening?
A protector can interfere with touch responsiveness, especially at an edge. Remove it temporarily to test; do not assume every protector is defective.
Will Reset All Settings delete my photos?
No. It preserves personal content, but removes Wi‑Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards and many preferences.
How can I open Control Center if the touchscreen is not responding?
Try AssistiveTouch if the screen responds enough to enable it. If the phone is frozen, force-restart it; persistent dead areas require service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I factory-reset my iPhone?
No, not as an initial fix. Reset All Settings is the lower-disruption option; Erase All Content and Settings deletes the device.
What if only one Control Center button is broken?
Test that feature in Settings and try another Control Center control. A single failing button may indicate a feature-specific problem rather than a Control Center gesture fault.
