How to Fix Common Windows 11 Update Errors

Start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then use the error code and timing to select a focused fix. Back up important files before trying repairs or rollback.

If a Windows 11 update will not download or install, start with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the PC, and check for updates again. If that does not help, use the displayed error code and when the problem began to choose a targeted fix. Back up important files before troubleshooting; save more involved repair or rollback options for later.

Before troubleshooting, protect your files

Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before you troubleshoot update problems. Copy important files to a USB drive or back them up with OneDrive, and confirm the copies are accessible. A backup protects your data; it does not repair Windows or the update.

Windows Update labels and available recovery options can vary by installation. If a Settings option described below is missing, check the current Microsoft guidance for your device.

Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft recommends the automated troubleshooter in Get Help. You can also run it through Settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run. Follow any instructions shown by the troubleshooter.
  3. When it finishes, restart the PC.
  4. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

See Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions if the route or prompts differ on your PC.

Use the error code to choose a focused fix

An error code is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. Microsoft associates the following codes with possible causes and troubleshooting directions. A given code can have more than one cause, so use the detailed instructions for the exact code shown on your device.

Code Possible issue Microsoft associates with it What to try
0x8007000d Update-file or cache problems Run the troubleshooter. Microsoft also recommends clearing the Windows Update cache; follow its full instructions carefully.
0x800705b4 An update took too long or was interrupted Run the troubleshooter and check your internet connection.
0x800f0922 Insufficient disk space or component issues Free disk space. Microsoft also lists temporarily disabling a VPN as a troubleshooting step; this is not a universal fix.
0x80070057 or 0x80080005 Corrupted files or incorrect system configuration Microsoft suggests System File Checker and the Windows Update troubleshooter.
0xC1900101 An incompatible driver Use Microsoft’s code-specific instructions to investigate the driver issue.
0x80248014 An update database or service problem Follow Microsoft’s detailed troubleshooting for this code.
0x80070005 An access or permission problem Follow Microsoft’s code-specific instructions for access issues.
0x80070002 An update failed to install Restart the PC, as Microsoft recommends, then check for updates again.

Microsoft’s Troubleshoot problems updating Windows page provides fuller steps, including how to clear the update cache. That procedure stops the Windows Update service, clears the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, then starts the service again. Follow Microsoft’s complete directions rather than deleting files or changing services without context.

If the update is stuck, check the connection and space

A slow or interrupted update is one possible explanation for 0x800705b4. Check that the PC remains connected to the internet and let the update process complete before interrupting it. If the code is 0x800f0922, check available disk space and free some if needed. These clues do not establish a single cause for every stuck update; use the error code and Microsoft’s code-specific guidance to narrow the next step.

Repair Windows if ordinary troubleshooting fails

Windows 11 includes a repair reinstall option on some installations. It reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components, while Microsoft says it preserves apps, files, and settings.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Look for Fix problems using Windows Update and select Reinstall now if available.
  3. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while the process runs.

The option is not present on every Windows 11 installation. Check Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version of Windows for current availability and details.

Choose manual update or recovery tools only when they fit

Windows Update Assistant: feature updates on supported PCs

Windows Update Assistant is for manually installing a feature update on a compatible PC, such as when that feature update has not arrived automatically. Microsoft says it supports x86/64 devices and does not run on ARM-based PCs. For quality updates, use Windows Update in Settings rather than the Assistant. See Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant guidance.

Uninstall a recent update if the timing fits

If the problem began immediately after an update was installed, Microsoft says uninstalling that recent update might help. Use the recovery instructions for your device in Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows guide; available choices depend on the device.
