If an Amazon Alexa Tablet will not get online, start with the checks that separate a tablet problem from a network problem: turn off Airplane mode, verify the network name and password, and see whether another device can use the same Wi‑Fi. Then restart the tablet and network equipment, move the tablet closer to the router, and test a phone hotspot. If the hotspot works, your home network is the more likely source. If a public hotspot shows as connected but apps have no internet, complete its sign-in page. Amazon’s available Alexa Tablet guidance does not establish a model-specific procedure for apps that crash or refuse to open, so do not assume that Fire Tablet cache or data instructions apply; identify the exact model and software version before using app-specific steps.
First identify which problem you have
The right fix depends on when the failure occurs. A tablet that cannot find a network needs a different check from one that joins Wi‑Fi but cannot load a page, and both differ from an app that crashes after the tablet is already online.

| Symptom stage | What you may see | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Power or first-time setup | The tablet does not start, setup reports an error, or an Amazon or Google sign-in fails. | Charge it, restart after an error, and use the appropriate account-recovery path. |
| Joining Wi‑Fi | The network is missing, the password is rejected, or the tablet repeatedly disconnects. | Check Airplane mode, credentials, range, interference, and whether another device connects. |
| Connected without internet | Wi‑Fi appears connected, but pages and online features do not work. | Check for a public-network sign-in portal, then run the hotspot and network-reset tests. |
| App opens and then fails | An app crashes, will not open, or reports an error after setup. | Record the exact details and consult instructions for the exact Alexa Tablet model and software; a verified Alexa-specific app procedure is not established here. |
Run the basic Wi‑Fi checks in this order
1. Turn Airplane mode off
Open Settings > Network & Internet and confirm that Airplane mode is off. A tablet can appear to have a saved network while its wireless radios are disabled, so this simple check should come before changing passwords or resetting settings.
2. Re-enter the network details
Check the Wi‑Fi network name (SSID) and password character by character. A wrong character, an old password saved on the tablet, or selecting a similarly named nearby network can all prevent a join. If possible, test the same network with another phone or computer:

- Ready when inspiration strikes — With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Made for Amazon Stylus Pen (sold separately) offers a natural writing experience that responds to your handwriting. Use it to write, sketch in apps like OneNote, and more.
- If another device also fails, the issue is probably broader than the tablet.
- If other devices work normally, keep investigating the tablet, its saved network profile, or its location.
This comparison is more useful than repeatedly guessing at the tablet’s password because it establishes whether the network is serving anyone successfully.
3. Check distance and interference
Temporarily move the tablet close to the router and retry. Keep it away from sources of radio interference such as microwave ovens and baby monitors. If the router is busy, temporarily disconnect other Wi‑Fi devices and test again. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to leave your household devices disconnected permanently.
4. Add a hidden network manually
A network that does not broadcast its name may not appear in the normal list. Add it manually with the exact network name and password. In the connection’s Advanced options, confirm the hidden-network setting before saving and trying the connection again.
Restart the tablet and the network
Restart the tablet normally
Restart the tablet after checking Airplane mode and the credentials. A restart clears a temporary wireless or setup state without deleting your accounts or files. If the tablet produced an error during initial setup, Amazon’s setup guidance says to hold the power button for 20 seconds to restart it.
Reboot the modem and router
When several devices cannot get online, reboot the modem and router as well as the tablet. Allow the network equipment to finish starting before trying the tablet again. If phones, computers, and other devices still cannot connect after the reboot, contact your internet service provider; the failure is no longer isolated to the Alexa Tablet.
Keep mesh and extender names consistent
For seamless roaming between a primary router, extenders, or mesh nodes, Amazon says to use the same network name, security type, and password on each part of the system. Inconsistent settings can make a tablet appear to lose the network as it moves between nodes. Verify those three values across the equipment rather than changing the tablet repeatedly.
Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic, not a permanent fix
Turn on a smartphone’s personal hotspot and try connecting the Alexa Tablet to it. This test changes the access point while leaving the tablet mostly unchanged:
- Hotspot works: the home router, modem, mesh configuration, or home-network settings become the leading area to investigate. The result narrows the problem but does not prove that one particular router component is defective.
- Hotspot also fails: the tablet, its saved wireless settings, software state, or the connection procedure remains suspect. Continue with the software and reset checks below.
After the test, reconnect the tablet to the intended network and avoid treating a successful hotspot connection as proof that every home-network feature is configured correctly.

Install the available software update
Check whether the tablet has the latest software version available and install an offered update using the device’s current update controls. Software labels and paths can change between models, so use the controls shown on your tablet rather than a path copied from a different Fire Tablet generation. If the tablet cannot reach any network, the update check may not be possible until connectivity is restored.
Reset only the network settings when the profile is stuck
If the network name and password are correct, other checks have not helped, and the tablet still will not join, use Amazon’s documented network reset path:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open Reset Options.
- Choose Reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi.
- After the reset completes, select the network again and enter its password.
This is a targeted network reset, not a factory reset. The Alexa Tablet Wi‑Fi instructions do not tell you to factory-reset the device. Do not import a more disruptive factory-reset sequence from a separate Fire Tablet help page unless current instructions for your exact Alexa Tablet model explicitly require it.

Fix “connected” public Wi‑Fi with the sign-in portal
Hotels, libraries, schools, airports, and other public networks may require a browser-based sign-in or acceptance of terms after the tablet joins the Wi‑Fi radio network. Until that step is completed, the status can say connected while apps have no internet access.
- Connect to the public network.
- Wait for its welcome or sign-in page.
- If no page appears, open the Silk browser and visit a simple, ordinary web page to prompt the portal.
- Complete the provider’s sign-in, payment, or terms flow.
- Return to the app and test the connection.
Amazon notes that cancelling the portal can leave the tablet connected without internet. If the portal still will not load or the provider rejects the sign-in, the network operator is the relevant party to contact; changing the tablet’s saved Wi‑Fi password will not complete that provider-controlled step.
Handle setup and account errors separately
The tablet will not power up
Charge the device first. If it still does not power on, use the 20-second power-button restart described in Amazon’s setup guidance. Do not interpret a no-power symptom as a Wi‑Fi failure until the tablet can start reliably.
An Amazon or Google login fails
Use Amazon’s password-reset flow for an Amazon account problem. Initial setup can finish without Wi‑Fi, but apps and some features require internet access and become available after the tablet connects.
Recommended Free Tools
Amazon’s setup information recommends a Google sign-in for Google Play and Google apps. Use an Amazon sign-in for Amazon apps and services such as Alexa, Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, and Amazon Photos. Choosing the wrong account type can look like an app or network problem even when the wireless connection is working.

What to do when an app crashes or will not open
Know what is and is not verified
Amazon’s Fire Tablet help index lists general topics for resolving app errors, clearing an app’s cache or data, and force-closing an app. The index does not provide the procedures themselves, and those topics were not verified as instructions for the Alexa Tablet named here. The Alexa Tablet setup guidance addresses login, Wi‑Fi, and setup errors, not a post-setup app-crash sequence.
Therefore, do not assume that a Fire Tablet menu path applies to your Alexa Tablet, and do not claim that clearing app data is harmless. Clearing data can affect an app’s local state, but the available Alexa Tablet instructions do not establish the exact consequences for a particular app or model.
Collect the details needed for an accurate fix
Before changing app data or applying instructions from another device family, record:
- The app’s exact name.
- The complete error message, including capitalization or an error code.
- Whether the app fails immediately, after sign-in, or only when loading online content.
- The exact Alexa Tablet model, including any model or generation label shown in device information.
- The installed software version.
- Whether other apps and the Silk browser can reach the internet.
- Whether the failure occurs on home Wi‑Fi, a phone hotspot, a public hotspot, or every connection.
This is practical reporting guidance, not a quoted Amazon procedure. It prevents you from applying a cache, force-close, or data-reset instruction meant for a different model or operating system. Once those details are recorded, consult the current official app-error instructions for that exact device and software version.
Separate an app problem from an internet problem
If the Silk browser and several other online apps work while one app fails, the symptom is narrower than a tablet-wide Wi‑Fi outage. If no app can reach the internet, return to the Wi‑Fi, hotspot, portal, and network-reset checks instead of changing one app’s data. If the app opens but fails only at sign-in, verify that the correct Amazon or Google account is being used and that the tablet actually has internet access.
Use the result of each test to choose the next step
| Test result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Other devices also cannot use the home Wi‑Fi | The problem is likely network-wide rather than limited to the tablet. | Reboot modem and router; if multiple devices remain offline, contact the internet provider. |
| Other devices work, but the tablet cannot join | Focus on Airplane mode, credentials, range, interference, hidden-network settings, software, and the tablet’s saved network profile. | Restart, move closer, check the hidden-network option if relevant, update, then reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi. |
| The tablet works on a phone hotspot | The home network is a likely source, although the test does not identify a specific failed router component. | Review router, extender, mesh, security, and network-name settings. |
| The tablet joins public Wi‑Fi but has no internet | A captive sign-in portal may not have been completed. | Open Silk, trigger the welcome page, and finish the provider’s flow. |
| Only one app fails while other online functions work | The symptom is app-specific, but the correct Alexa Tablet procedure is model- and software-dependent. | Record the app and device details and use current official instructions for that exact model. |
| Every connection and app fails | The issue may involve the tablet’s software state or setup, not just one router. | Confirm the software version, document the errors, and seek model-specific official support rather than importing Fire Tablet steps. |
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting worse
- Skipping the other-device test: Reconfiguring a tablet cannot repair an outage affecting the entire household.
- Confusing Wi‑Fi association with internet access: Public portals can leave a device marked connected until the browser sign-in is completed.
- Testing only from the usual seat: A close-range test separates weak signal or interference from a broader connection failure.
- Changing many settings at once: Perform one diagnostic change, test, and record the result so you know which action mattered.
- Using a Fire Tablet recipe without checking the model: A help-index topic is not proof that its menu path or side effects apply to an Alexa Tablet.
- Factory-resetting too early: The Alexa Tablet Wi‑Fi guidance specifies a Bluetooth-and-Wi‑Fi reset, not a factory reset. Preserve the less disruptive options until exact model instructions say otherwise.
When to escalate
Contact the internet service provider when multiple devices cannot connect after the modem and router have been rebooted. Contact a public-network provider when its portal or terms page will not complete. For an app that still fails after you have verified internet access, capture the model, software version, app name, error text, and connection type before contacting device or app support. Those details let support distinguish an account problem, a network path, and an app-specific failure without asking you to repeat unrelated resets.
Bottom line
For Wi‑Fi failures, work from least disruptive to most targeted: Airplane mode and credentials, another-device comparison, range and interference, restart, hotspot test, software update, and finally Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi. Public networks require their browser sign-in portal. For crashing apps, the responsible answer is narrower: the available Alexa Tablet material does not verify a specific cache-clearing, force-closing, or data-reset procedure, so identify the exact model and software and use instructions that explicitly match them.
