Start with Samsung TV’s built-in Picture Test: if the fault appears in the test image, follow the guidance for a TV display issue; if the test looks normal, check the source device, input and cable. This quick split helps you avoid changing picture settings—or buying a cable—when the problem is inside the TV.
Samsung menu names and available features vary by model, year, region and software. If a path below does not match your TV, check its manual or Samsung support page for the exact model.

Run Picture Test before changing settings
Picture Test displays an image generated by the TV, which helps distinguish a TV-side problem from one caused by an HDMI device, cable or broadcast source. On US Samsung TVs from 2022 onward, open All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Older models generally use Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. The exact route may differ.
- If the fault appears in Picture Test: use the symptom-specific advice below. Samsung recommends requesting service for persistent lines or flickering visible in the test.
- If the test looks normal: try another source or device, check the affected input and cable, and see whether the problem follows one device.
For an HDMI connection, Samsung’s built-in cable test is intended for cables shorter than 2 m; Samsung cautions that it may not return good results with longer cables. Menu availability varies by model.

If the picture is dark, too bright, blurry or unclear
Check the picture mode and controls
A recent picture-setting change may explain a sudden difference. Samsung describes Standard as suitable for many viewing environments, Dynamic for brighter viewing conditions, and Movie for dark rooms. Filmmaker Mode presents content without picture changes and may look darker. Choose based on your room and preference rather than assuming one mode is best for every TV.
To review individual controls, open Settings or All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings. Depending on the model, controls may include:
- Backlight: screen light output.
- Brightness: picture brightness.
- Contrast: separation between dark and light areas.
- Sharpness: apparent edge definition.
- Color: saturation.
- Tint (G/R): shifts hue between green and red.
There is no universal numeric setting: the right balance depends on the TV, content and viewing conditions.

Check automatic dimming and energy-saving options
If brightness changes on its own, temporarily turn off relevant automatic controls to see whether the symptom stops. Depending on model and region, these may be called Brightness Optimization, Energy Saving Solution, Motion Lighting, Ambient Light Detection or Power Saving Mode. Samsung’s Singapore guidance discusses the first three; its US guidance names the latter options for specified model generations.
If picture adjustments have become confusing, use Picture > Expert Settings > Reset Picture where available. This restores picture controls to defaults; it is not necessarily a full TV reset. Samsung also lists Digital Clean View as a control for reducing image noise or distractions, but it does not replace checking the source or investigating a fault that appears in Picture Test.
If the screen flickers
Run Picture Test while the flicker is happening. If it flickers there too, Samsung advises requesting service. If the test is clear, check automatic brightness and energy-saving controls, then inspect the external connection or source. On supported TVs, the HDMI cable test may help assess the connection, subject to its less-than-2-metre design limit.

Samsung documents one narrow, historical exception: 2018 QLED TVs running software version 1270.6 could flicker when LED Clear Motion was enabled; the workaround was to turn that feature off until an update. This is not a general fix for other models or software versions.

If you see lines, colored dots or spots
Check whether the mark remains visible in Picture Test. If it does, Samsung recommends requesting service; it notes that black lines can sometimes result from a cracked screen. If the test is clear, replace or check the cable serving the external device that shows the lines. If the problem remains, troubleshoot that device or try another input and setup.
When contacting Samsung about a display issue, have the TV’s model code, software version and serial number available. Samsung cautions that physical damage is not covered by warranty and says replacing a damaged screen may be more economical than repair and a new screen.

If colors are wrong on a component connection
First run Picture Test. If its colors are wrong too, Samsung recommends support or service. If the test looks normal, check the component leads and their labels: green Y, blue Pb and red Pr. The red Pr video plug belongs in the red Pr video jack—not the similarly colored R audio jack.
Reseat the leads and try another component input or another TV if available. Samsung’s check connects green Y first (the picture appears black and white), then blue Pb (adding bluish hues) or red Pr (adding reddish hues), followed by the remaining lead. If colors are still wrong on another setup, the cable or external device is implicated.
If the picture is cropped, stretched or zoomed
Open Picture > Expert Settings > Picture Size Settings, if available. Samsung lists options such as 16:9 Standard, Custom and 4:3. Fit to Screen shows the full image; on supported models, Zoom and Position adjusts framing when Picture Size is set to Custom. Available controls vary, and the correct aspect ratio can depend on the source content.

If part of the screen is black or one HDMI source has no picture
Open the TV’s own menu. If the menu is also cut off by the black area, Samsung recommends requesting service. If the menu displays fully, investigate the signal path:
- Check the HDMI cable and connection, then try a different source device or TV input.
- If possible, use a known-working cable to see whether the picture returns.
- If another cable, port or device works normally, troubleshoot or replace the component that failed the comparison.
- Run Picture Test if the problem remains. If the fault appears in the test, follow Samsung’s service guidance.
Replacing a short HDMI cable is reasonable only when the fault is isolated to that connection or Samsung’s cable test indicates a problem; it is not a remedy for lines or flicker shown by Picture Test.
If the picture freezes or the TV struggles to change HDMI sources
Samsung recommends updating the TV software if the picture freezes during normal use, then contacting support if freezing continues. Its support guidance identifies a model-specific fix—firmware version 1371.0 or higher—for certain 7 Series Crystal UHD TVs that freeze or change HDMI sources slowly. Do not apply that version number to other models; check the exact model’s Samsung support or downloads page.
