This guide uses the official 2024 D&D Basic Rules unless a section is explicitly labeled 2014. The key to resolving most disputes is to identify the exact skill, spell, or feature involved: “arcane” flavor alone does not decide a roll or a spell’s ability score.
When do I roll an Arcana check in D&D?
Under the 2024 rules, Arcana is an Intelligence skill associated with recalling lore about spells, magic items, and the planes. That description does not mean a player can call for an Arcana check whenever something magical appears. A check is relevant when a rule, an action, or the DM’s judgment makes Arcana applicable. If you are proficient in Arcana, add your proficiency bonus to an applicable check.

For an action not covered by a specific rule, describe what your character is trying to learn or do. The DM determines whether it is possible and whether a check is needed; the rules do not provide a universal test for every magical inference.
Can I use Arcana to identify a spell?
There is a specific 2024 procedure for one case: identifying a spell from its observable, ongoing effects. You must take the Study action and succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check. The rule says, “To identify it, you must take the Study action and succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check.” See the official 2024 Basic Rules: Spells.

This is not a universal identification rule. Do not apply that action and DC automatically to an instantaneous spell, a magic item, or an effect whose features are not observable. Check for another rule that applies; otherwise, the DM decides whether an attempt is possible and what check, if any, it calls for.
What ability do I use for an arcane spell?
Use the spellcasting ability granted by the feature that lets you cast that spell. The label “arcane” does not, by itself, mean Intelligence. The 2024 rule states: “Your spellcasting ability for a spell is determined by whatever feature gives you the ability to cast the spell.” Consult that feature’s wording in the 2024 Basic Rules: Character Classes.

When a table dispute comes up, identify which feature granted the spell and use the ability it specifies rather than inferring one from the spell’s theme.

Can I cast a spell while holding a weapon and shield?
Check the spell’s components and the feature that allows you to use a focus. Verbal, somatic, and material components each have their own requirements; holding a weapon and shield does not erase them.
- Verbal (V): the spell requires its verbal component.
- Somatic (S): the caster needs at least one hand for the gesture.
- Material (M): provide the listed material, or use an eligible focus if your feature allows it.
A hand used to access a material component can also perform the spell’s somatic component. But a focus only substitutes for eligible materials: it does not replace a material that the spell consumes or one with a specified cost. A component pouch requires a free hand to reach into, and a focus must be held unless its description says otherwise. For a particular spell, check its V/S/M listing, any cost or consumption note, your focus-granting feature, and the equipment’s wording before deciding whether your hands are available.

Do I need to prepare a wizard spell to cast it as a ritual?
First confirm which edition your table uses. Wizard preparation and ritual casting differ between the 2014 and 2024 rules; do not combine procedures from the two editions.

The 2014 wizard prepares spells from their spellbook, with the number determined by wizard level and Intelligence. A wizard can ritual-cast a spell with the ritual tag from the spellbook without preparing it. See the official 2014 Basic Rules: Classes for that edition’s wizard rules.

2024 Basic Rules
Use the 2024 wizard rules for a 2024 character; they present preparation and wizard features differently. Do not assume the 2014 spellbook ritual procedure carries over. Check the character’s current feature and the spell’s text in the 2024 Basic Rules: Character Classes and 2024 Basic Rules: Spells.
How should I settle a rules dispute at the table?
- Confirm the edition. Establish whether the character uses the 2014 or 2024 rules before comparing text.
- Name the mechanic. Is the question about an Arcana check, a spellcasting ability, components, or a class feature?
- Read the operative wording. Check the relevant skill, feature, spell, and equipment text rather than relying on the word “arcane.”
- Apply any defined procedure. For example, the 2024 Study-action and DC 15 rule applies to identifying a non-instantaneous spell from observable ongoing effects.
- Ask the DM to adjudicate what remains open. If the rules do not define the proposed action or inference, the DM decides whether it can be attempted and what check, if any, applies.
The official 2024 Basic Rules are the reference for the 2024 guidance here; its landing page is dated September 1, 2024. Use the text for the edition your table has chosen when resolving a specific case.
