You still need an active PlayStation Plus membership to play it. That rule is different from Extra and Premium catalog games, which can become unavailable when they leave the service, even if they are already downloaded.
What happens to a claimed Monthly Game?
Add the game to your library during its monthly offer period. The claim remains associated with your account after the game leaves that month’s lineup; downloading it is not required to preserve the claim. PlayStation says members can add Monthly Games to their library and play them while they have an active membership. PlayStation Plus games and FAQ and PlayStation Support’s guide to accessing PlayStation Plus games explain the claim and access rules.

Monthly Games are included with Essential and higher-tier plans. The game does not become a permanent, unrestricted purchase: access to play it depends on your membership being active.
What if your membership expires or you cancel?
If your membership expires, access to Monthly Games claimed at no extra cost is suspended. Restoring PlayStation Plus access can make them playable again, subject to the account and title remaining eligible. Canceling renewal does not usually end access immediately: membership benefits continue until the end of the already-paid period. PlayStation Support explains both outcomes in its cancellation guidance.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
How catalog games differ from Monthly Games
Extra and Premium provide access to rotating Game Catalog titles; Premium also includes Classics Catalog access. These are service-library games, not games permanently added to your account by claiming them as Monthly Games. If a catalog title leaves the service, it can become unplayable even when it is installed on your console. PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus Usage Terms say downloaded games are playable while the subscription is valid and the game remains available in the service.
Downloading a catalog game stores its files; it does not preserve the license after removal. Check the title’s announced leaving date before beginning a game you may not finish soon.

Which PlayStation Plus plan and game type apply?
| Game or plan | What provides access | What happens after the offer or service availability ends |
|---|---|---|
| Claimed Monthly Game | An active PlayStation Plus plan that includes Monthly Games: Essential, Extra, or Premium | The claim stays associated with your library, but play requires active membership. |
| Game Catalog title | Eligible Extra or Premium membership, while the title remains in the catalog | Access can end when the title leaves the service, even if downloaded. |
| Classics Catalog title | Eligible Premium membership, while the title remains in the catalog | Access can end when the title leaves the service, even if downloaded. |
| Separately purchased game | A purchase of the applicable game edition | Separate from a subscription claim; availability and access depend on the specific game, edition, and region. |
These plan descriptions reflect PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus overview. Catalogs and benefits can vary by country or region, platform, device, and account conditions, so check the local PlayStation page and the individual game listing.

- If it is a Monthly Game: Add it to your library before the monthly offer ends. You do not need to download it at that time.
- If it is a catalog game: Check its removal date and plan to finish it before it leaves. A download will not keep it accessible afterward.
- If you are canceling: Check your subscription end date. Benefits continue through the paid period, then subscription-based access stops.
- If you want to own a specific catalog game: Check whether that title and edition are sold separately in your region. Do not assume every catalog title can be purchased.
A separately purchased game is distinct from a subscription claim. PlayStation’s terms also note that purchased add-ons associated with a catalog game can be used again if you resubscribe or purchase the game, subject to access conditions; see the US usage terms. Whether a particular game is available to buy must be checked on its own listing.
