PS5 shooter lag, stuttering, and unreliable aim can feel similar, but they often point to different problems. First determine whether the issue is online-only, limited to one game, visible as local hitching or freezing, or tied to one DualSense controller. Then try the least disruptive check that matches the symptom.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
Use the pattern to choose a troubleshooting path:
- Rubber-banding, delayed actions, or disconnects during online play: check the network and service status.
- Visible hitches, freezes, or crashes: check the affected game, its installation, and updates.
- Aim or button input feels wrong: test whether the problem follows one controller across games and menus.
- Several games have local performance problems: consider system-level troubleshooting after the game-specific checks.
These checks help narrow down possibilities; they cannot establish the cause of an individual player’s problem by themselves.

Fix online lag, rubber-banding, or disconnects
- Check PlayStation service status. A service outage can affect online play even when the home connection is working.
- Run the console’s connection test. Open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. Menu wording can vary by system software version or region.
- Restart the PS5. Retest the affected shooter after it reconnects.
- Restart the router or modem. For the procedure on PlayStation’s connection-error page, turn it off and wait at least five minutes before restarting.
- Improve the Wi-Fi path. Move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions, then test again.
- Compare another online game or service. If several are affected, focus on the home connection or PlayStation service. If only one game is affected, check with that game’s publisher.
PlayStation’s advice for the CE-105799-1 connection error is to “Restart your PlayStation®5 console, and connect to the Internet using a wired connection as much as possible.” PlayStation’s CE-105799-1 troubleshooting page recommends a wired connection where possible. If you do not have a suitable cable, an Ethernet cable for PS5 can help you compare wired and Wi-Fi play. It will not fix a server outage, a game-specific bug, local frame stutter, or a controller fault.

Do not start with port forwarding, a static IP address, or custom DNS. PlayStation lists advanced network steps for a specific server-connection error; consider them only after simpler checks, and seek help from your router or internet provider if needed. See the CE-105799-1 error instructions for that procedure.

Address game stuttering, freezing, or crashes
Check the affected game first
- Confirm that the game has finished installing or downloading.
- Check for a game update and make sure PS5 system software is current.
- If you play from disc, gently clean the disc and try another disc if one is available.
- If you play a digital copy, verify its download and installation status.
- If the problem continues, try starting the game from the beginning to see whether it is associated with a particular save, then consider reinstalling the affected game.
When only one title keeps freezing, PlayStation advises contacting the game’s publisher. If several games are affected, continue with console-level checks or contact PlayStation Support and Repairs. Reinstalling is a later step, not the first response to every hitch.
Troubleshoot DualSense input or stick problems
Test the controller in another game and in the PS5 menus. If the issue follows one controller across both, try the official reset procedure:

- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Use a pin or similar small object to press the reset button in the small hole on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the console with its USB cable.
- Press the PS button to pair it again.
Update PS5 system software if the problem remains. The reset is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for a worn or damaged stick or button. If the same physical control still behaves incorrectly, contact PlayStation support for controller help. The reset instructions use a USB cable and a small pin-like object; they do not establish a need to buy a replacement cable or repair kit.

Safe Mode starts the PS5 with basic functions active. PlayStation provides several targeted options; they are not guaranteed frame-rate fixes.

- Clear System Software Cache: PlayStation says this may help with system feature problems or performance drops.
- Repair Console Storage: intended for startup or storage issues; PlayStation says it does not erase data.
- Rebuild Database: scans the drive and creates a new content database.
Follow PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions to start the console and select an option. Avoid choosing Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) casually: these are later troubleshooting options, and resetting erases data saved on console storage. Back up first. If the issue persists, contact PlayStation Support.
