Start with the symptom and any error code, then try the matching connection or software fix before using Safe Mode or resetting the console. Many setup problems can be narrowed down with basic checks; a reset is not the right first step, and some Safe Mode options erase user data.
Start with the symptom and error code
If the PS5 shows an error code, look up the exact code in PlayStation’s PS5 error-code index before trying a general fix. Codes can point to different problems, including network or server connections, account access, system updates, games, discs, and storage. A service outage, for example, is not evidence by itself that the console is defective.
If there is no code, follow the branch below that matches what is happening. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a cable, setting, or recovery step made a difference.
PS5 turns on but shows no picture
- Check the TV input. Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the PS5.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Check both ends and reconnect them firmly. If the picture is still missing, try another HDMI cable if one is available.
- Try Safe Mode’s display settings. Turn the console off by holding its power button for three seconds. Once it is off, press and hold the power button again; release it after the second beep, which Sony says sounds about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. In Safe Mode, choose Change Video Output to access resolution and HDCP settings that may help with a blank screen. If Safe Mode does not appear, check the HDMI, USB, and power connections. Sony also recommends trying another cable when Safe Mode will not launch. To power cycle the console, hold the power button until it beeps and turns off, disconnect its power for 20 minutes, reconnect it, and try again. If it remains inaccessible, follow Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting steps and, if needed, use PlayStation Repairs.

PS5 will not connect to the internet or sign in
First check whether other devices can get online and whether PlayStation services are available. Sony’s Connectivity Support hub links to service status and connection troubleshooting. This helps distinguish a home-network problem from a service or account issue.
To review the console’s connection setup, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, then choose a connection type and enter the network security information if prompted. Sony lists this path in its PS5 setup guidance. For a sign-in or connection error, use the exact code in the error index rather than assuming that changing network settings will address an account restriction or service problem.

PS5 system software update fails
If you can reach the home screen
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then check for and install the update. If an update failed over Wi-Fi, Sony says connecting the PS5 to the router with a LAN cable may help.
If the normal update path is unavailable
Safe Mode includes an option to update system software. Sony also documents a manual update using a PC or Mac, a controller and USB cable, and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Follow the current folder, filename, and installation instructions on Sony’s system-software update page exactly; do not improvise the USB folder structure.

Do not choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as an early update fix: it deletes user data. Back up what you can and confirm the selected option’s on-screen description before proceeding.
PS5 will not start properly or reports a storage problem
Safe Mode’s Repair Console Storage is intended for startup or storage trouble, and Sony says it does not erase data. For a storage-related code, check the exact entry in the error-code index before choosing another recovery action; an insufficient-storage error, for instance, is not automatically a database problem.

What the Safe Mode options do—and whether they erase data
PlayStation describes Safe Mode as a way to start the console “with only the most basic functions active.” The available choices serve different purposes; read the on-screen description before confirming an action. Sony’s Safe Mode documentation distinguishes these options:

A game or app crashes or shows an error
Use the displayed code to find a game-specific or system-specific remedy; there is no single fix for every crash. For CE-108262-9, which Sony identifies as a system/software data error, its guidance includes updating system software. If the code occurs after starting a game or app, Sony also recommends deleting and reinstalling that game or app, and using Safe Mode’s cache/database options. PS5 will not read a disc
Disc-reading problems have their own troubleshooting steps. Use Sony’s PS5 disc troubleshooting guide rather than applying network or download fixes. Follow its instructions for this symptom, and use Safe Mode or repair escalation only as directed there.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
If the relevant cable checks and Sony’s symptom-specific software steps do not resolve the issue, use PlayStation Repairs for diagnostics and service options. A blank screen, failed update, or storage message alone does not establish that a hardware component has failed; do not open the console as a troubleshooting step.
