How to Fix Common Problems After a Windows 11 Feature Update

A practical path for Windows 11 problems after a feature update, from low-risk checks and driver fixes to update removal, rollback, and repair.

If a Windows 11 problem started after a feature update, first identify whether the change was a new Windows version, a routine update, or a driver or app change. Restart and try the relevant troubleshooter before removing updates or resetting Windows. Back up important files before recovery: Microsoft warns, “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.”

First identify what changed

A feature update moves Windows to a new version; a monthly quality or security update does not. The distinction matters because removing a selected recent update and returning to the previous Windows version are different recovery actions.

Check Settings > System > About for your Windows version and build, then open Settings > Windows Update > Update history to see recent updates. Note when the symptom began and what exactly fails: startup, Wi-Fi, display, a particular app or device, or the update itself. Timing can point to a cause, but does not prove the update caused it.

Before troubleshooting, save your work and back up important files. If this is a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT before changing managed update or recovery settings.

Try low-risk fixes first

  1. Restart the PC. A restart can clear a temporary failure after an update. If Windows is stuck restarting or cannot start, do not repeatedly interrupt it; use the recovery options below if needed.
  2. Run the relevant troubleshooter. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run the troubleshooter that matches the problem. For update failures, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance and its Get Help flow.
  3. Check the basics for a failed update. Confirm the device has a reliable internet connection and is connected to power. Record any error code before trying further fixes.

Microsoft lists possible causes for specific update errors, not certain diagnoses. For example, it associates 0x8007000d with update-file or cache corruption, 0x800705b4 with an update taking too long or being interrupted, 0x80240034 with an incomplete update or connection issue, 0x800f0922 with low disk space or component issues, and 0xC1900101 with an incompatible driver. Its update troubleshooting page gives free-space guidance of 16 GB for 32-bit and 20 GB for 64-bit upgrade scenarios; those figures are not a universal requirement for every current device or update.

If the update broke Wi-Fi, a device, or an app

First check whether the affected device or service works outside the specific app or context. For a device problem that began after a driver change, rolling back that driver may help.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category, right-click the device, and select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if available.

Rolling back requires administrator permissions and is only available when Windows has a previous driver to restore. If the button is unavailable, follow the PC or device manufacturer’s instructions for driver support rather than using an unofficial driver-updater utility. Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance explains the option.

If the screen flickers after the update

Use Task Manager to help distinguish a display-driver problem from an incompatible app:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Watch whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen.
  • If Task Manager flickers too, investigate the display driver. If Windows recently changed it, try the driver rollback steps above.
  • If Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. Consider uninstalling or updating recently changed apps, using the app maker’s instructions.

See Microsoft’s screen-flicker troubleshooting steps for more detail.

Uninstall a recent Windows update

Choose this when the problem appears tied to a specific recent update, rather than a move to a new feature version. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft also advises weighing the security risks before removing a security update.

If Windows starts

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates.
  3. Select the relevant update and choose Uninstall.

If Windows does not start

  1. Enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall updates.
  3. Choose the available update-removal option and follow the prompts.

Use Microsoft’s instructions to uninstall a Windows update for current details. If you are considering removing a security update, review the risks and consider whether a repair reinstall is a better fit.

Go back to the previous Windows version

If the issue followed a feature-version upgrade, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back if that option is available. Microsoft says it is offered for a limited time—in most cases, 10 days—and requires the files needed for the previous version to remain on the PC.

Going back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made since then. Back up first, and make sure you can reinstall any software you rely on. This is different from uninstalling a selected update. See Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows guidance.

Repair the current Windows installation

On eligible Windows 11 installations, Fix problems using Windows Update reinstalls the same Windows version to repair system files and components. Microsoft says the repair keeps files, apps, and settings. The option may be absent on managed work or school devices, or on unsupported or out-of-date configurations.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
  3. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while Windows downloads and completes the repair.

Read Microsoft’s current-version repair instructions for eligibility and current labels.

Option When it may fit What it changes
System Restore A recent system change may have caused the problem and a restore point is available. Reverses system changes made after the restore point; check the recovery prompts for the effects on apps and settings.
Reset this PC Windows needs a broader reset and other fixes have not helped. Offers choices to keep personal files or remove everything. Apps and settings are removed even when personal files are kept.
Reinstall from installation media Other recovery options are unsuitable or unsuccessful. The result depends on the selected path; reinstalling can erase the device.

For every recovery option, read the prompts on your own device before confirming. Microsoft’s Windows recovery-options guide describes the available routes and their consequences.

Check for a known issue matching your version and device

Known issues can apply only to a particular Windows version, build, update, or environment. Check Microsoft’s release-health notes for your exact version and hardware or management setup before assuming a broadly reported issue applies to your PC.

For example, Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 notes for Windows 11 version 26H1 document desktop-loading problems after the August 2026 preview update KB5120996 and later updates. The issue was primarily observed on Azure Virtual Desktop hosts using FSLogix and could occur more often with some existing user profiles; it is not evidence of a common problem on consumer PCs generally.

For that specific scenario, Microsoft’s temporary mitigation is to open Task Manager, choose Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and select OK. Microsoft also documents a Known Issue Rollback for enterprise-managed devices; IT must configure the matching group policy and restart affected devices.
