Start by identifying the scope: a problem in one game usually calls for game-specific checks; problems in several games may point to the console; and a missing, flickering, cropped, or incorrect picture calls for checking the HDMI signal path and display settings. Changing video output settings can resolve compatibility or presentation issues, but it cannot guarantee better game-engine performance.
First, sort the problem by where it happens
- One game only: Check that game’s installation, updates, and save data. For an online or gameplay issue limited to one title, check with its publisher.
- Several games: Update PS5 system software and troubleshoot the console. If the problem continues across games, contact PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs.
- Picture or HDMI signal: Check the display, cable, selected input, and any device between the PS5 and screen before changing game settings.
For PS5 video-output settings, Sony’s instructions are in How to change PS5 console resolution. Steps below use the current menu paths described there; labels can change with system software updates.

Fix game freezes or crashes in one title
Use these checks when the problem is confined to a particular game. Sony’s PlayStation game freezes or crashes guidance covers both digital and disc games.

- Install updates. Highlight the game on the home screen, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update. Also install the latest PS5 system software through Settings.
- For a disc game, inspect the disc. Wipe it gently with a clean, soft cloth. Try another disc to see whether the problem follows one disc or affects games more broadly.
- Test without the existing save. If the game keeps crashing, start from the beginning without loading the current save. If the new game works, the existing save may be corrupted; do not overwrite or delete it until you have considered whether you need it.
- Delete and reinstall the game if needed. This is a later step after checking updates and installation. Reinstalling the game does not establish that its save data is safe, so handle saves separately.
A console reset is a destructive last resort, not a routine game fix: it erases console storage. Back up data first and follow PlayStation’s reset instructions. If only one title remains affected, contact its publisher about known game-specific issues. If several games are affected or the fault persists after troubleshooting, consult PlayStation Repairs.

Fix no image, pixelation, or the wrong resolution
When the screen is blank, pixelated, or showing an unexpected resolution, first check the connection rather than assuming the PS5 is faulty. Follow Sony’s No image output from your PS5 console? guidance:
- Make sure the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends and the screen is on the HDMI input used by the console.
- If possible, test a different HDMI cable or port.
- Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the display. Remove a receiver, soundbar, capture device, or other intermediary from the signal path.
- Turn off the PS5 and display and unplug them. Wait 20 minutes, reconnect them, and test again.
- Check for display firmware updates. Consult the TV or monitor manual for any setting needed to accept high-resolution signals.
To see what the console and display report, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information, including its reported resolution, VRR, and HDR support. With Resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 detects display capability and selects the highest resolution it supports. If the problem persists after these checks, contact PlayStation Repairs.

PS5 4K 120 Hz troubleshooting
4K at 120 Hz requires the entire signal chain to support the mode: the display, the particular HDMI port, any intermediate equipment, and the cable. Check compatibility before treating a failure to reach 4K/120 Hz as a console defect.
- Display and port: Confirm the TV or monitor supports 4K/120 Hz and that the PS5 is plugged into the correct HDMI 2.1 port. Some TVs require enabling that port or its enhanced signal mode in the TV settings.
- Firmware and signal path: Update the display firmware and connect the PS5 directly to the display while testing, bypassing receivers and other devices.
- Cable: Try the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Replacing a cable is not a universal fix for every picture problem; test the existing cable and port first.
- PS5 settings: Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check Resolution (Auto or 2160p) and set Video Transfer Rate to Auto while testing.
- Game support: The game must support a 120 Hz output mode. The display’s support for 120 Hz alone does not make every game run at that rate.
Check the PS5’s reported output signal after each change. A display may support 4K and 120 Hz individually but still fail to accept that combination through a particular port or signal path.

Address flicker, 120 Hz issues, and uneven presentation
Try Video Transfer Rate only as a flicker diagnostic
If the picture flickers at 4K, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate and test -1 or -2. These settings reduce the signal’s bandwidth demands and limit some output combinations, including 4K/120 Hz and other high-bandwidth formats. Treat this as a compatibility test, not a picture-quality upgrade; restore Auto if the reduced mode does not solve the flicker or prevents the mode you want.
Test 120 Hz Output against the display and game
Enable 120 Hz Output only when both the display and game support it. If a 120 Hz game has output problems on a monitor or another display device, turn this setting off to test, as Sony recommends. This changes the video output mode; it does not guarantee a change to the game’s underlying performance.

Use VRR selectively
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) dynamically synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with PS5 output. Sony describes it as a way to reduce or eliminate certain artifacts, including screen tearing and frame-pacing issues, on supported setups. It is not a universal performance fix: results vary by TV, game, and selected visual mode, and games may need updates for VRR support. If a title behaves unexpectedly, try disabling Apply to Unsupported Games in the VRR settings. Sony’s VRR feature announcement explains the feature; use the current PS5 support settings for the available menu options.

Fix No HDR or an HDR picture that looks wrong
First confirm the connected screen supports HDR. Then go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and choose the behavior that suits your content:

- On When Supported: Non-HDR games and apps remain in SDR; HDR output is used when the content and display support it.
- Always On: The PS5 converts SDR content to HDR output as well. That does not mean the original game or app was authored in HDR, and the result may look different.
Use Adjust HDR to tune brightness with the on-screen instructions. Neither mode is best for every display or viewer: PlayStation notes that image quality depends on the home entertainment setup. Sony’s PS5 resolution and video-output guide includes the HDR setting details.
Adjust display area for cropped edges or a black border
For an image that extends beyond the screen or leaves an unwanted border, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area and follow the on-screen instructions. This adjusts the displayed image area; it is separate from resolution, HDR, and game performance settings.
