Why is a survival horror game stuttering or running slowly on PC?
First identify what the problem looks like. Low frame rates that persist throughout play point toward system capability or graphics load; brief hitches may have a different cause, such as shader compilation. A slowdown that develops after extended play makes heat and airflow worth checking. Visual corruption, failure to launch, and crashes call for their own checks rather than a generic FPS tweak.

Check the exact game’s requirements
Compare your PC with the current requirements published for that specific title. Requirements and performance expectations differ between games, so settings that work in one survival horror game are not a reliable template for another. Capcom warns that a PC below minimum requirements may have poor frame rates or fail to run; if it meets minimum but not recommended specifications, lowering graphics settings may help. Reduce graphics load methodically
Lower settings relevant to the game’s own graphics menu, then replay the same scene if possible. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the problem. There is no universal setting order established for all survival horror games, and lowering every option at once makes diagnosis harder. If the game offers a frame-rate limit, testing a lower cap can also reduce system load.
What should I check if performance drops after playing for a while?
Heat can make gameplay less smooth. Capcom’s general suggestions are to place the PC in a well-ventilated area, lower graphics settings, or limit the frame rate to reduce heat. Check that vents are not obstructed and that the machine has room for airflow. Do not assume heat is the cause of every slowdown: look for a pattern in which performance worsens as the session continues.
If you have evidence of dust buildup or restricted airflow, follow the computer maker’s safety instructions before cleaning. The cited guidance does not establish a universal temperature threshold or cleaning procedure, and it does not show that a cleaning product will improve performance.

How to update drivers, Windows, and check laptop graphics settings
- Update the graphics driver. Get the current driver from your GPU maker and install it. Restart the PC after installation. If the problem persists, a clean driver installation may be a next step under the game’s or GPU maker’s guidance; a third-party driver-removal utility is not a necessary first move.
- Run Windows Update. Install applicable updates and restart if prompted.
- Check GPU routing on dual-GPU laptops. In the relevant Windows or GPU-vendor graphics settings, make sure the game is assigned to the high-performance or dedicated GPU. Keep the charger connected and check the laptop’s power profile. Menu names vary by Windows version and vendor, so use current instructions for your device rather than relying on old control-panel labels. Do not disable integrated graphics in BIOS as a general performance fix. Laptop configurations differ, and GPU assignment is the safer targeted check.
Could overlays, background apps, or damaged game files be the cause?
Test for background software conflicts
For one diagnostic run, close resource-heavy applications, especially recording software and performance overlays. Capcom notes that these applications can compromise a game’s performance and stability. If closing them changes the result, re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict rather than leaving unrelated software disabled indefinitely.
Verify or repair the game files
If files may be missing or damaged, use the verify or repair option in the launcher where you own the game. This checks game integrity; it is not a general fix for low FPS caused by hardware limits or graphics load. Follow the launcher’s current instructions.

Apply GPU-error workarounds only to the matching title and error
Epic’s support guidance for certain GPU-fault errors in Alan Wake 2 suggests disabling fullscreen optimizations; if the fault continues, it also advises disabling optional GPU-control-center background features such as performance boosts or game optimizations. Treat these as title- and error-specific steps, not routine advice for every game: Epic Games support for Alan Wake 2.

Shader compilation and a damaged shader cache are different situations. A game may hitch while it builds shaders, particularly after a first launch or update; deleting cache files does not solve the work of compiling them. Follow the game’s own instructions and allow compilation to finish before judging performance.
Square Enix’s guidance for the game covered by its article says first-launch stuttering can occur while the shader cache is created. It instructs players to use that game’s compile-shader setting and return to the title screen, estimating compilation at 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications. That is Square Enix’s estimate for its title, not a general wait time for other games: Square Enix Support.

Separately, Capcom says damaged shader-cache files can cause some graphical issues and provides specific filenames to delete in its Steam troubleshooting instructions. Delete cache files only when the support steps for your particular game direct you to do so; do not treat cache deletion as a universal stutter remedy: Capcom Support.
What details should I send if the game still crashes or runs poorly?
Give the game’s support team enough detail to reproduce or distinguish the problem. Include:
- Exact game title and version, plus the launcher or store edition if relevant.
- CPU, GPU, memory, Windows version, resolution, and graphics settings.
- The scene or location, what you were doing, and how often the issue occurs.
- Steps to reproduce it, whether restarting changes the result, and whether other games show similar trouble.
- A crash report or report archive if the game creates one.
For example, Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 (2023) support guide describes a CrashReport folder and asks players to provide crash-report archives. Follow the instructions for the exact title rather than assuming every game stores reports in the same place: Capcom Support.
