Choose drought-tolerant nature-strip plants by checking local rules first, then matching locally suitable species to the strip’s sun, soil, drainage and available space. Check mature size, safety and establishment-care needs before planting: drought-tolerant plants may still need watering as their roots take hold. Rules and climate vary across Australia, so a species or clearance that works in one council area may not be suitable or permitted in another.
1. Check what your council allows
Ask the relevant council whether verge or nature-strip planting is permitted, whether you need a permit or planting plan, and which design rules and plant lists apply. If another authority manages the road, check with that road manager too. Before digging, identify underground services and protect street-tree roots. Keep required access clear for pedestrians, utility work, bins and vehicles.

| Jurisdiction and source | Requirements described in the guidance |
|---|---|
| Brisbane City Council | For residential properties under Brisbane City Plan 2014, verge gardens should use low-growing or groundcover plants no higher than 700 mm. Trees and tall shrubs must not be planted, and a 1.8 m-wide pedestrian access strip is required. Brisbane City Council verge gardens guidance. |
| City of Boroondara | Guidance reported as adopted on 15 December 2025 describes a maximum vegetation height of 50 cm, at least 50 cm clearance from the kerb and at least 60 cm from the base of street trees, alongside other asset-access requirements. Boroondara Nature Strip Planting Guidelines. |
| City of Vincent | The Adopt a Verge program requires a sketched plan and a report confirming underground services. Plantings must not obstruct pedestrians, vehicles, sightlines, signs or services. City of Vincent verge guidance. |
2. Assess the strip before choosing plants
Observe the site rather than relying on a plant’s general drought-tolerance label. Note the hours and intensity of sun, soil type and drainage, slope, heat reflected from pavement, existing tree shade and the width available. Consider whether you can water during establishment; a verge may be difficult to reach with a hose.

Measure usable space around kerbs, driveways, paths, street trees and utilities. Compare that space with each candidate’s mature height and spread, not the size of the plant in its nursery pot. Compacted or sandy soil and shade from established trees can make conditions quite different from an exposed, free-draining garden bed.
3. Find locally suitable species and compare them
Start with your council’s recommended list or a plant directory that can be filtered for your suburb and garden type. Favor species suited to your local climate and the actual sun, soil and drainage on the strip. For roadside planting, look for safe, low-growing groundcovers, grasses or shrubs that stay within local height and clearance limits. Avoid plants local authorities identify as prickly, poisonous or likely to cause allergic reactions.

Boroondara’s examples include kneed wallaby grass (Rytidosperma geniculatum), native daisy (Brachyscome multifida) and running postman (Kennedia prostrata). These are examples from that council’s recommendations, not a universal list; confirm current local guidance and suitability for your site before planting. 4. Prepare the soil and help plants establish
Remove unwanted lawn and weeds so they do not compete with new plants. Address soil conditions using local advice rather than assuming every strip needs the same amendment. In Perth, the City of Vincent notes that sandy soil can become water-repellent and discusses conditioners and wetting agents for relevant conditions. Water Corporation recommends a quality soil wetting agent for local native plants during establishment where appropriate to help water penetrate the root zone; follow the product label and local advice if one is needed.
In its Western Australian guidance, Water Corporation recommends planting in late autumn or early winter, applying an even 5–10 cm layer of coarse mulch, and keeping mulch away from plant bases. Check local recommendations before applying that timing or depth elsewhere. Water plants before planting and follow species-specific and nursery instructions. Check current local watering days and any process for an establishment exemption.

- Cross-Zone Vibrant Wildflower:A perennial herb with tall spikes (30-60cm tall), Texas Bluebonnet bursts with dense flower clusters from spring to summer, edged with white for striking contrast. Thrives in diverse climates, from temperate gardens to subtropical meadows.
- Planting Tips: Sow seeds in spring or fall when temperatures remain steady between 15-25°C (59-77°F). Soak seeds for 12-24 hours or lightly scarify the seed coat before planting for improved germination.
- Drought-Tolerant : This variety is highly drought-tolerant, making it ideal for low-water gardens or arid regions with minimal irrigation needs.

- Use: Texas Lupine’s vibrant blooms make it perfect for flower beds, borders, or wild gardens, attracting bees and butterflies.
5. Maintain clearances and plan for ongoing care
Allow for watering and maintenance while plants establish, even if the mature planting is intended to need little supplementary water. Plan for occasional weeding and pruning, and keep growth inside local height limits, sightlines and clearances. Check mulch every few months; where local rules permit, replenish it to maintain an even 5–10 cm layer.
