Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor low frame rates, stuttering, long loads, or crashes in a dark fantasy game, first identify which symptom you have and when it began. Then compare your PC with the game’s current official requirements, test one setting at a time in the same scene, and check whether other games behave the same way. The cause might be a demanding graphics setting, a title-specific shader-compilation process, background load, or hardware that does not match the target settings—not necessarily a failing graphics card.
Start by identifying the problem
“Poor performance” can mean several different things, and each points to a different line of investigation. Before changing settings, record the game and version, PC specifications, display resolution, graphics preset, and what the problem looks like. Note whether it began on first launch, after a game update, after a driver change, or after enabling a feature such as ray tracing.

- Consistently low FPS: The game may be asking more of the CPU or GPU than your current settings allow.
- Intermittent hitching or stutter: Look for a change in the game, driver, or graphics settings; some games also compile shaders and build a cache.
- Long loading: Check the game’s storage requirements and whether it is installed on an HDD or SSD.
- Visual corruption or crashes: Record when they occur and consult the game’s current support guidance rather than treating them as ordinary low-FPS symptoms.
These symptoms are clues, not proof of a single cause. Test the affected game and, if possible, another game: a problem limited to one title is more likely to need that game’s patch notes or support advice, while problems across several games call for a broader look at the PC and its background load.

Compare your PC with the game’s current requirements
Use the official requirements for the specific game and version, and compare them with the resolution and graphics quality you want to play at. Requirements are not generic thresholds for all dark fantasy games. They can describe distinct hardware tiers and different performance targets.

For example, Blizzard’s Diablo IV PC requirements published at launch in 2023 paired these tiers with stated targets. They are historical launch specifications, not a guarantee of current performance or current requirements:
| Diablo IV launch tier | Stated target | Memory and storage |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 1080p native resolution / 720p render resolution, low settings, 30 fps | 8 GB RAM; SSD with 90 GB available |
| Medium | 1080p, medium settings, 60 fps | 16 GB RAM; SSD with 90 GB available |
| High | 1080p, high settings, 60 fps | 16 GB RAM; SSD with 90 GB available |
| Ultra 4K | 4K, ultra settings, 60 fps | 32 GB RAM; SSD with 90 GB available |
The full Blizzard page names CPU and GPU classes for each tier. Check the current official requirements for your game before using any hardware tier to decide on an upgrade. Blizzard also cautioned that running Diablo IV below its minimum specifications—including on an HDD, dual-core CPU, or integrated GPU—could significantly diminish the experience; that warning applies to its game, not to every PC title.

Test demanding graphics settings one at a time
Use the same scene or repeatable gameplay segment for each test. Lower the resolution or a demanding visual setting, make one change, and see whether the symptom changes. High-resolution settings can substantially increase GPU demand, while CPU limits can also constrain game performance. Microsoft’s technical article, last updated on August 19, 2020, discusses both issues in its analysis of Windows game performance; its observations are technical context, not a diagnosis of your particular PC. Read Microsoft’s discussion of common issues for Windows titles.

- Choose a repeatable scene and note the current resolution, preset, and symptom.
- Reduce resolution or one demanding option, such as ray tracing if the game offers it.
- Replay the same scene and compare how it feels and performs.
- Keep the change only if it helps; otherwise restore it and test a different option.
If a change helps, that suggests the setting contributes to the workload, but it does not prove the GPU is the only bottleneck. Avoid changing several options at once: doing so makes it difficult to tell what mattered.

Ray tracing: check the game’s version-specific guidance
Ray tracing can change a game’s performance demands. In its notes for Elden Ring version 1.09, Bandai Namco said ray tracing could have become enabled by default after that update. It advised players who had it unintentionally enabled and were experiencing performance problems to switch ray tracing quality to Off, check the PC’s ray-tracing environment requirements, and ensure graphics drivers were current. Those are version 1.09 instructions, not universal or necessarily current advice. Consult the version 1.09 notes alongside current guidance for your game.
The same historical notes listed these Elden Ring ray-tracing configurations. They are specific to version 1.09 and its stated targets, not general graphics-card recommendations:

For stutter, check whether the game is compiling shaders
Shader compilation is one possible source of hitching, but the right steps depend on the title. Square Enix’s support article for the game it covers says an initial shader cache is created after installing and playing for the first time. Its documented procedure is to open System > Graphics, switch Compile Shader on, and return to the title screen. The article estimates the process may take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications and says the GPU shader cache must be enabled. That time estimate and menu path apply to that support article, not to games generally.

Check the current instructions for the affected title before trying the procedure: Square Enix’s shader-stutter support guidance. Do not repeatedly clear shader caches as a blanket fix. A cleared cache may need to be rebuilt, and the cited guidance does not recommend routine cache clearing.

Check background apps and drivers if the issue persists
Unnecessary startup applications and driver problems are reasonable broad checks when game performance has changed, but neither is a guaranteed FPS fix. Valve’s Steam Support troubleshooting page recommends removing unnecessary startup applications and checking CPU, GPU, and audio drivers. See Valve’s game-performance troubleshooting guidance; follow the current instructions for your Windows version and hardware rather than installing drivers from an unofficial source.
If only one game is affected, check that game’s current patch notes and official support channel. A fix or setting described for one title—or for a particular older version—may not apply to another game or a later update.
Would an SSD improve performance?
An SSD can matter when a game requires one or is still installed on an HDD, and it may be relevant to loading. It is not a general cure for low FPS caused by CPU or GPU limits, and the Diablo IV launch requirements do not establish that an SSD resolves shader stutter. Blizzard listed an SSD and 90 GB available for every Diablo IV launch PC tier in 2023; check the current storage requirements for your own game before deciding whether storage is the issue.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf you are considering an internal SSD, first check that your motherboard supports the drive’s interface and physical size, and choose enough capacity for the game and other files. Treat this as a targeted storage decision, not a substitute for matching the game’s requirements to your desired resolution and settings.
When hardware is the likely mismatch
Consider an upgrade only after you have compared current official requirements, tested settings, and established that the same limitation persists. Match the component to the target: resolution, graphics quality, ray-tracing state, and the game maker’s stated frame-rate target all matter. A graphics card is a plausible focus when a current game’s requirements and your tests point to a GPU workload mismatch; it is not the default answer to every hitch or slowdown. Do not use Diablo IV’s launch tiers or Elden Ring version 1.09’s ray-tracing specifications as current buying guidance for other games.
