A mechanical keyboard that misses a keystroke, repeats a character, or disconnects does not automatically have a failed switch. First check whether the symptom happens in more than one app, then test the keyboard’s connection and power. These steps help narrow down whether the cause is the keyboard, computer, software, USB connection, or Bluetooth setup before you consider repair or replacement.
Start by identifying what is failing
Note whether no keys work, one key misses input, a character repeats, a key feels or behaves as if stuck, or the whole keyboard disconnects. Try the affected key in a second application. If the problem occurs in only one program, investigate that program before opening or replacing the keyboard.

Testing in another app or on another computer is a way to narrow down the cause, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Logitech recommends checking whether incorrect key response is limited to one program and testing the keyboard on another computer. Logitech Support’s key-response troubleshooting covers general keyboards and mice, not a universal mechanical-switch repair procedure.

Compare apps and computers
- Test the affected key in another application. If it works there, focus on the original app’s settings or behavior.
- If practical, connect the keyboard to another computer. If the symptom disappears, the original computer’s software, drivers, or ports may be involved. Logitech notes that a USB chipset driver may be a possibility on Windows when a keyboard works on another computer; this is not a certain diagnosis.
- If the same key fails across apps and computers, the keyboard itself becomes a more likely source, but this still does not prove the switch has failed.
Clean only as the manufacturer allows
For a key that is stuck or intermittent, Logitech’s instruction is: “Clean the button/key with compressed air.” Follow the cleaning and safety instructions for your exact keyboard. Compressed air may help with debris, but it is not a promise to repair a failed switch.

If the key still misbehaves after manufacturer-approved cleaning and cross-device checks, consult the keyboard maker’s model-specific support and warranty information. The available guidance does not establish a universal method for removing or replacing mechanical switches, or which pullers or replacement switches fit a particular board.
If the whole wired keyboard stops responding
- Unplug the keyboard and connect it directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub, extender, or switch.
- Try another USB port. If available, test the keyboard on another computer.
- If the keyboard remains unresponsive, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model and connection type.
Logitech recommends trying a different USB port and computer in its keyboard and mouse power and connection guidance. Do not assume a replacement cable will work: only consider one if the model has a detachable cable and the replacement matches the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements.

If a Bluetooth keyboard disconnects or will not pair
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft recommends checking Bluetooth, pairing mode, range, battery, and Windows updates. Its guidance says: “Your Bluetooth device must be in pairing mode and within range of your PC.” The troubleshooting steps below are for Windows; paths and labels may vary by version.

- Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter if it is available on your system.
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in Windows and put the keyboard into pairing mode according to its manual.
- Move the keyboard within range of the computer.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, remove the keyboard, then add it again as a new device.
- Check or replace the keyboard’s battery as appropriate for its design. Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when battery is low.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, check Windows Update, and restart the computer.

Check power for the keyboard’s design
- Replaceable batteries: use fresh batteries of the type and specification stated by the keyboard maker.
- Rechargeable keyboard: check that the charging cable and power source are working, using equipment compatible with the model. Do not assume a cable with the same connector is suitable.
Connection behavior can also depend on the specific keyboard. For example, Logitech’s K810 support article advises checking that model’s battery indicator and discusses low battery, metal surfaces, and radio-frequency interference. It recommends moving that keyboard closer and keeping nearby electrical devices at least 8 inches (20 cm) away. Those device-specific recommendations should not be treated as universal distances or procedures for other keyboards. See Logitech’s K810 Bluetooth guidance.

- Only one application has the problem: troubleshoot that application.
- The keyboard works on another computer: investigate the original computer’s settings, drivers, and USB or Bluetooth connection.
- A wired keyboard works from a direct USB port but not through an accessory: keep it directly connected while troubleshooting the hub, extender, or switch separately.
- The same key remains intermittent on multiple computers after approved cleaning: ask the manufacturer about service, warranty coverage, or a repair specific to the model.
- The Bluetooth keyboard pairs but drops the connection: check power, range, and nearby interference, then follow the manufacturer’s model-specific reconnection instructions.
These are diagnostic inferences from isolation checks, not definitive proof of a particular fault. If the manufacturer’s documentation does not cover a repair, do not assume that switch removal or replacement is safe or compatible for your board.
