If an iPad suddenly reads everything a student touches or taps and swipes no longer behave normally, check whether VoiceOver is on before assuming the device is broken. VoiceOver is a screen reader that deliberately changes how touch works. For spoken reading without changing the whole touch interface, use Read & Speak instead.
When taps and swipes act strangely, check VoiceOver
Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver. When VoiceOver is on, touching an item reads or selects it; a double-tap activates the selected item. As Apple puts it, “When VoiceOver is on, you must use VoiceOver gestures to operate iPad.” Apple’s VoiceOver guide explains the changed interaction model.

If the student uses VoiceOver, leave it enabled and practice its gestures together. If it was turned on unintentionally, switch it off in the VoiceOver setting. It may also be possible to turn it off with Siri, Control Center, or an Accessibility Shortcut if that shortcut was configured on the iPad.
Practice before returning to a lesson
In Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Practice, rehearse gestures without triggering actions elsewhere on the iPad. If a swipe or double-tap does not register, try making the gesture more quickly. Practice with the student before relying on VoiceOver during class.

To have a page read aloud without VoiceOver
Open Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak. Turn on Speak Screen, then swipe down from the top edge of the screen with two fingers to have the screen read aloud. Or turn on Speak Selection, select text, and tap Speak. Read & Speak also provides voice, language, and speaking-rate options. Apple identifies it as a useful tool for early readers; the right setting depends on the student and the reading task.
When a student needs different touch or button input
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch. AssistiveTouch can provide onscreen alternatives to gestures or hardware-button presses, and its actions can be customized. Apple describes it as a way to adapt the touchscreen to individual needs: Use AssistiveTouch on iPad.

AssistiveTouch can work on its own or with a compatible adaptive accessory, such as a joystick. Check compatibility with the exact iPad and the student’s access method before selecting an accessory; Apple’s general description does not establish that a particular model will work for every setup.

Several accessibility tools may sound relevant, but they serve different needs. Match the feature to what the student is trying to do, how they access information, and whether they can enable, disable, and practice it independently. Apple’s education accessibility overview describes these tools; it is not an individualized accommodation plan.

Practice and verify the setup before class
- Identify the task: reading text, navigating the whole interface, staying in one app, or entering input.
- Check whether the option changes standard touch behavior, requires spoken or visual access, or depends on compatible hardware.
- Practice the relevant gestures and the enable/disable route with the student before using the feature during a lesson.
- If settings are shared across classroom iPads, confirm the school’s device-management process first. Apple notes that some accessibility settings can be shared temporarily, but the steps and management constraints depend on the setup.
