Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you can’t sign in to EPFO, first identify which step is failing: password reset, access to your registered mobile, UAN activation, or the portal itself. Use the official Member Interface for login and password recovery; use UMANG for current UAN activation. The right route depends on whether you can receive an OTP on the mobile number linked to your UAN.
Choose the recovery route that matches your problem
| Problem | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Forgot password; can receive OTP on the registered mobile | Member Interface → Forgot Password |
| Forgot password; old registered mobile is unavailable | Member Interface password recovery and its alternate-mobile identity check |
| UAN is not activated, or you need a new UAN | UMANG → EPFO Services → “UAN Services Through Face Auth” |
| Portal or backend error | Check the live EPFO notice, retry later if service is disrupted, or contact the listed helpdesk |
Log in to the EPFO Member Interface
Open the EPFO Member Interface. The login page asks for your UAN, password and CAPTCHA. If you have forgotten the password, select Forgot Password rather than repeatedly guessing it.

Reset your password when you still have the registered mobile
- On the Member Interface, select Forgot Password.
- Enter your UAN and the CAPTCHA requested on the page.
- Complete verification using the OTP sent to the mobile number seeded with your UAN, then follow the portal prompts to set a new password.
This is the standard route described in the EPFO FAQ on UAN and KYC. Use only the official portal to enter the OTP; never give it to someone who calls or messages you.

Reset your password if the old mobile number is unavailable
The same EPFO FAQ describes an alternate identity-check route for members whose registered mobile has changed. On the Forgot Password flow, choose the option to use another mobile if it appears. The FAQ says the process asks for basic details—name, date of birth and gender—and Aadhaar or PAN details for KYC matching. If the information matches, enter the new mobile, verify its OTP and continue with the reset.

Portal labels can change, so follow the options displayed in the live official workflow rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party guide. If the details do not match or the route is unavailable, contact EPFO through its listed helpdesk instead of sharing identity documents with an unofficial service.
Activate or generate a UAN through UMANG
The current EPFO Member Interface notice says portal-based UAN activation has been discontinued. It directs members to activate an existing UAN or generate a new one through UMANG using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT).

- Open the official UMANG app.
- Go to EPFO Services, then UAN Services Through Face Auth.
- Select UAN Activation and follow the instructions shown in the app.
For the detailed flow and errors covered by EPFO, see the EPFO User Manual for UAN Services on UMANG. Use the wording and prompts in the current app if they differ from the manual.
What to try when an OTP or face-authentication step fails
EPFO’s UMANG manual lists remedies for errors in the flows it describes. An OTP problem does not by itself establish whether the cause is incorrect information, delivery delay or a service issue.
Rank #3
- Invalid Aadhaar or mobile information: Recheck the information entered against your records, then submit it again.
- OTP failure: Use the app or portal’s resend option if offered, and carefully enter the newly issued OTP. Do not keep requesting codes in quick succession.
- Face-authentication failure: Retry the face-authentication process following the app’s instructions. If the documented retries do not work, contact support.
- Persistent or unexplained error: Check whether EPFO is reporting service disruption before treating the issue as a bad password or incorrect identity detail.
These are the corrective actions listed for the manual’s described errors, not a guarantee that every OTP or backend failure has the same cause.
Change the mobile number after regaining account access
Once you can sign in, EPFO’s FAQ says the UAN-linked mobile number can be changed in Member Profile. If your Aadhaar is not linked to a mobile number, the FAQ directs you to visit an Aadhaar Service Centre.

When EPFO itself may be having a service problem
EPFO’s Member Portal has reported a major database consolidation and software upgrade, phased service availability and a post-migration stabilization period. The notice advises members to avoid repeated access attempts during peak hours and repeated requests. Such a notice means service conditions can affect access; it does not identify the cause of any individual error.

Protect your UAN and identity details while seeking help
EPFO warns members to protect their UAN and password, never share passwords, and not to deposit money in response to requests to unlock an account. The Member Interface states: “EPFO never requests personal information such as Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details over the phone.” Treat unsolicited calls or messages asking for an OTP, credentials, identity information or payment as suspicious. Enter sensitive details only in an authenticated official EPFO or UMANG workflow.
