If your 240 Hz monitor is running at 60 Hz, first check the active refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the correct monitor and choose 240 Hz if it is listed. If it is missing, Windows is not currently offering that mode through your selected resolution and connection path; the monitor is not necessarily faulty.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. This path applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- If more than one display is connected, select the 240 Hz monitor from the display selector.
- Check the listed resolution and the Choose a refresh rate menu. Select 240 Hz if it is available.
- After applying the setting, return to Advanced display and confirm that the active refresh rate is 240 Hz.
Microsoft defines a display’s refresh rate as how many times per second its image refreshes. The monitor’s advertised maximum describes a capability; it does not guarantee Windows will offer that rate at every resolution or through every input and connection. See Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions.

If 240 Hz is not listed
The usable mode depends on the complete display path: the selected resolution, the monitor input, the graphics output, the cable, and any dock or adapter. Check these in a methodical order before assuming a component has failed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm the GPU’s display setting
If you use an NVIDIA GPU, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution, select the intended display, and choose a refresh rate from the list. This provides a second place to check the mode Windows offers; it does not make an unsupported combination available. See NVIDIA’s Change Resolution instructions.

Simplify the connection
- Disconnect unnecessary docks, dongles, adapters, and other accessories during testing.
- Reseat both ends of the display cable.
- Try a known-good cable and another video output supported by your monitor and graphics hardware.
- If possible, test the monitor on another computer, or test the computer with another display.
These comparisons help identify whether the issue follows the monitor, computer, cable, or a particular port. Microsoft also recommends checking cable connections, trying another cable or output, disconnecting accessories, and testing another system in its external-monitor troubleshooting guidance.
On a desktop with a separate graphics card, check that the cable is connected to the intended graphics-card output if the system has both motherboard and GPU ports. Use the manuals for your specific monitor and GPU to confirm which resolution and refresh-rate combinations each input and output supports. HDMI or DisplayPort version labels alone do not guarantee 240 Hz for every model: supported combinations can also depend on resolution and other settings.

Check the monitor’s input and on-screen menu
Use the monitor’s on-screen display to confirm that the correct input is selected and review any model-specific high-refresh or compatibility options. Consult the manual for the exact model; menu names and supported combinations vary. For example, BenQ ZOWIE’s monitor FAQ gives guidance for applicable models, not a universal setup for all monitors.
If the problem began after a driver or system update
Once you have checked the selected display, resolution, input, and connection, consider whether a recent graphics-driver change coincided with the missing refresh rate. Microsoft lists display-driver rollback or reinstallation among troubleshooting options for certain display problems. Follow the instructions relevant to your device and driver rather than reinstalling drivers as the first step; see its external-monitor guidance.

Some driver issues are narrower than a general 60 Hz limit. NVIDIA documents a scaling-related issue affecting certain monitors and games with Game Ready Driver 560.70 and later: in the described circumstances, changing scaling from Display to GPU and restarting may help. Apply that workaround only if your symptoms match the conditions in NVIDIA’s support article; it is not a general fix for every monitor that offers only 60 Hz.
Sony’s DisplayPort troubleshooting article includes setting a computer to 60 Hz for a particular display symptom. That is a diagnostic instruction for the situations described on that page, not a general way to restore 240 Hz.

Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
- 240 Hz is listed in Windows, but 60 Hz is active: select 240 Hz for the correct display in Advanced display, then verify the active rate.
- 240 Hz is missing in both Windows and the GPU control panel: check the monitor’s supported input and resolution, then simplify the signal path and test another cable or port.
- The issue started after an update: review the driver change and use the relevant vendor’s rollback or workaround guidance only when it fits the symptoms.
- Only one computer or connection fails: compare another system, cable, or supported port to see which part the problem follows.
- Windows reports 240 Hz but one game seems limited: check that game’s display mode, frame-rate cap, synchronization settings, and status display separately.
240 Hz refresh rate is not the same as 240 FPS
A 240 Hz setting describes how often the display refreshes; it does not guarantee that a game renders 240 frames per second. A game’s frame rate is affected separately by the game, graphics hardware, settings, and any frame-rate cap. Confirm the Windows refresh rate in Advanced display, then investigate the game’s own output and limits if the desktop is already set to 240 Hz.
