If your Fire tablet cannot finish setup, register to your Amazon account, or connect to Wi-Fi, start with the simple checks: confirm the network and password, check the tablet’s time, and see whether other devices can use the same network. Then work through the steps below in order. Menu names and update availability vary by model and software version, so identify your tablet before following model-specific directions.
Identify your Fire tablet before troubleshooting
Amazon’s support instructions and software updates vary by generation. To find your model, open Settings > Device Options and look for Device Model or About Fire Tablet. If you cannot navigate to that screen, use Amazon’s What Fire Tablet Do I Have? guide. Amazon also provides Quick Start Guides for multiple generations.

Keep the model name and generation handy. Amazon lists software versions separately by device; check the current entry for your exact model on its Fire Tablet Software Updates page rather than assuming a version listed for another generation applies to yours.

Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi
- Swipe down from the top of the screen, then tap and hold the Wi-Fi button. On some older devices, tap Wi-Fi and then More Settings.
- Turn Wi-Fi on if it is disabled, select the correct network name, and enter its password if prompted. Check the spelling and capitalization of the password.
- For a public hotspot, complete any required sign-in through its welcome page. It may ask for a PIN, voucher code, one-time password, or acceptance of terms; fees may apply. If the page does not open automatically, tap the connected network and choose Sign in.
These steps follow Amazon’s instructions for connecting a Fire tablet to the internet.

Fix Wi-Fi problems in a low-risk order
Work through these checks before changing router settings or resetting the tablet. After each step, try connecting again so you can tell whether the problem has changed.
1. Check Airplane mode, network name, and password
Turn off Airplane mode. Confirm that the tablet is trying to join the intended network, not a nearby network with a similar name, and re-enter the password carefully.
2. See whether other devices can connect
Try another phone, computer, or tablet on the same Wi-Fi network. If multiple devices cannot connect, the problem may be with the internet connection or network rather than the Fire tablet; Amazon advises contacting your internet service provider when other devices also fail.
3. Check distance and interference
Move the Fire tablet closer to the router and try again. Microwaves, baby monitors, and other wireless devices can interfere with a connection. If many devices are using the network, temporarily disconnect some and test again.
4. Restart the tablet and network equipment
To restart the tablet, hold the power button until a shutdown request appears, select OK, and turn it on again. Restart the modem and router as well, then wait two minutes before attempting to reconnect.

5. Add a hidden network manually
If the network name does not appear in the scan list, add it manually using the exact network name and password. Open Advanced and set the hidden-network option to Yes. A spelling error in the network name can prevent the tablet from finding it.
6. Reset the tablet’s network settings
On supported software, open Settings > Connected Devices > Network Settings Reset, then reconnect to Wi-Fi. Menu wording can differ by model or software version.

7. Check for a model-specific software update
Once the tablet has an internet connection, check whether an update is available for its exact model and generation. Amazon’s general guidance gives the path Home > All Settings > Device Options > System Updates; menu names may vary. The software update list separates versions by device.
8. Test with a phone hotspot
Try connecting the tablet to a smartphone hotspot. If it connects to the hotspot but not your usual Wi-Fi, that points toward the home or public network rather than the tablet. If it cannot connect to either, continue with the remaining tablet-side checks.
9. Consider a factory reset only as a last resort
Reset the tablet only if the less destructive checks have not worked and you understand what will be removed. See Amazon’s factory-reset instructions and consequences before proceeding.

Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers these steps. If your tablet roams among 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, an extender, or a mesh network, Amazon advises using the same network name, security type, and password across those connections.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Resolve a Fire tablet registration problem
If setup reaches the Amazon account step but registration fails, check the displayed device time first. Amazon identifies incorrect time, outdated software, incorrect account credentials, and a missing Wi-Fi connection as possible causes.
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi and confirm that the connection works.
- Check for an available software update using Home > All Settings > Device Options > System Updates, where those labels are available.
- Verify that you are entering the intended Amazon account’s credentials. If you have more than one account, check which one you are using.
- If the password may be wrong, validate the account credentials on another device before trying again on the tablet.
Amazon’s Fire tablet setup guidance lists these checks. If registration still fails after confirming the connection, time, software, and credentials, consult that guide for the next step applicable to your device.
What a factory reset removes
A factory reset is not just a way to refresh Wi-Fi. Amazon says it removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, restores factory settings, and deregisters the tablet from your Amazon account. You must register the tablet again afterward. Because it removes content and requires setup again, use a reset only after the other troubleshooting steps fail.
