The com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 message on iPhone usually appears when the Phone app cannot complete a voicemail-related action, most often while setting up, changing, or updating Visual Voicemail. It can be confusing because it looks like a system error, but in many cases it points to a connection problem between your iPhone, your voicemail service, and your carrier’s network.
This issue can be triggered by weak cellular service, outdated carrier settings, a temporary voicemail provisioning problem, incorrect network settings, or a glitch after an iOS update. The good news is that many fixes are simple, such as restarting the iPhone, checking cellular data, updating carrier settings, or resetting network settings.

If the error keeps coming back, the problem may be on the carrier side rather than the phone itself. Voicemail may need to be reset, reactivated, or reprovisioned by your mobile provider before Visual Voicemail works normally again.
What does com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 mean?
com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 is an iPhone Phone app error that usually appears when the device cannot complete a voicemail-related request. Most people see it while setting up Visual Voicemail, changing a voicemail greeting, saving a custom greeting, or refreshing the voicemail inbox. The text looks technical because it references Apple’s internal Phone app service, com.apple.mobilephone, but the failure is commonly tied to voicemail activation or communication with your carrier’s voicemail system.

In practical terms, error 1035 means your iPhone tried to send or receive voicemail configuration data and the request failed. That data may include your voicemail password, greeting settings, Visual Voicemail registration, or carrier provisioning details. Since voicemail depends on both iOS and your mobile carrier, the problem can come from the iPhone, the cellular network, the carrier account, or the voicemail server itself.
This error is especially common after a new iPhone setup, SIM swap, eSIM activation, iOS update, carrier settings update, number transfer, or plan change. In those situations, the Phone app may be ready to use, but voicemail may not be fully provisioned on the carrier side yet. You might still be able to make calls and use mobile data while voicemail setup fails with error 1035.
Where you may see error 1035
- When tapping Voicemail in the Phone app for the first time
- When choosing Set Up Now for Visual Voicemail
- When recording or saving a custom voicemail greeting
- When switching between default and custom greetings
- After restoring an iPhone backup to a new device
- After changing SIM, eSIM, carrier, or phone number
Error 1035 does not usually mean your iPhone hardware is damaged. It also does not necessarily mean your voicemail messages are lost. More often, it indicates that the voicemail feature is not authenticating correctly, the network connection is unstable, or the carrier has not enabled the correct voicemail service for your line. For example, a line may have standard voicemail enabled but not Visual Voicemail, or the voicemail box may need to be reset by the carrier before the iPhone can connect to it.

The message can also appear if the iPhone is trying to use Wi-Fi Calling, VPN, weak cellular signal, outdated carrier settings, or corrupted network settings while contacting voicemail servers. Because of this, the best fix is usually not one single action but a short sequence: confirm cellular service, restart the iPhone, disable interfering network features temporarily, update iOS and carrier settings, reset voicemail access if needed, and then escalate to the carrier if the voicemail feature still will not activate.
Common causes of error 1035 on iPhone
com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 usually appears when the iPhone’s Phone app cannot complete a voicemail-related request through your mobile carrier. It is most often seen while setting up Visual Voicemail, changing a voicemail greeting, saving a custom greeting, or after moving your number to a new iPhone, SIM, or eSIM. Although the message looks like an iOS system error, the underlying problem is frequently a mismatch between the iPhone, the cellular network, and the voicemail service on your carrier account.
Carrier voicemail provisioning problems
The most common cause is that voicemail is not correctly provisioned on the carrier side. Your plan may support voicemail, but the feature might not be fully activated, may be attached to an old SIM profile, or may need to be refreshed after a device upgrade. This can happen after switching carriers, porting a number, replacing a SIM card, converting to eSIM, restoring an iPhone from backup, or activating a new line. In these cases, the iPhone sends the voicemail setup request, but the carrier voicemail server rejects it or does not respond properly.
Weak cellular signal or unavailable mobile data
Voicemail setup depends on the cellular network, not just Wi-Fi. If your iPhone has poor reception, is in a low-coverage area, or is connected to an unstable carrier network, the Phone app may fail while saving a greeting or loading Visual Voicemail. This is especially likely indoors, while roaming, during a temporary carrier outage, or when cellular data is disabled for the Phone app’s related services. Even if regular calls work, Visual Voicemail may still fail because it uses carrier data services in the background.
Outdated carrier settings or iOS software
Carrier settings tell the iPhone how to connect to services such as calling, SMS, mobile data, hotspot, and voicemail. If those settings are outdated or did not install correctly after activation, voicemail features can break. An older iOS version can also cause compatibility issues with carrier voicemail systems, especially after a carrier changes its network configuration. This is error 1035 may start appearing after an iOS update, a carrier update, or a period of not updating the device at all.
Network configuration glitches on the iPhone
Sometimes the issue comes from saved network data on the iPhone itself. Corrupted cellular preferences, incorrect APN-related information, VPN interference, or a failed network handoff can stop voicemail setup from completing. Dual SIM users may also run into this if the wrong line is selected for calls, if the voicemail line is inactive, or if the iPhone is trying to configure voicemail for a number that is no longer the primary voice line.

Error 1035 can also appear when a voicemail inbox is in an unusual state, such as after a carrier migration, mailbox reset, or password change. If the voicemail password stored by the iPhone no longer matches the carrier’s system, greeting setup may fail. Similarly, if your carrier requires you to complete voicemail setup by calling the voicemail number first, Visual Voicemail may not work until that initial mailbox setup is finished through the traditional voice menu.
Quick checks before troubleshooting
Before resetting settings or contacting your carrier, run through a few basic checks. The com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 message often appears when the Phone app cannot complete a voicemail setup, greeting change, or carrier voicemail request. In many cases, the cause is temporary: weak cellular coverage, a stalled Phone app session, an unavailable voicemail server, or a feature such as Wi-Fi Calling interfering with the connection.

Voicemail setup usually depends on your carrier’s cellular network, not just Wi-Fi. Check the signal bars at the top of the screen and make sure your iPhone shows your carrier name or an active mobile plan. If you are indoors, in a basement, in an elevator, or in an area with poor reception, move somewhere with stronger signal and try again. You can also open Safari with Wi-Fi turned off to confirm mobile data is working.
- Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and retry voicemail setup over cellular.
- Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then turn it off and wait for your iPhone to reconnect.
- If you use Dual SIM, confirm the correct line is selected for calls and voicemail.
- Make sure your iPhone is not stuck on SOS Only, No Service, or Searching.
Restart the Phone app and your iPhone
A simple restart can clear a failed voicemail request. First, close the Phone app from the app switcher, then reopen it and go to Phone > Voicemail. If the same error appears, restart the iPhone completely. On Face ID models, press and hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. On older models, press and hold the side or top button, then slide to power off. Wait about 30 seconds before turning it back on.
Check voicemail access manually
If Visual Voicemail is failing, try calling voicemail directly. Open the Phone app, go to Keypad, then press and hold 1. You can also dial your own mobile number from your iPhone. If you can access voicemail by calling it, listen for prompts to set up your mailbox, record a greeting, or enter a voicemail password. This may complete the carrier-side setup that Visual Voicemail needs before it works in the Phone app.
- Open Phone and tap Keypad.
- Press and hold 1 to call voicemail.
- Enter your voicemail PIN if prompted.
- Complete any greeting, password, or mailbox setup prompts.
- Return to Phone > Voicemail and try again.
Review calling features that may interfere
Some network features can affect voicemail activation or greeting updates. Go to Settings > Phone and temporarily disable Call Forwarding if it is turned on. If you use Wi-Fi Calling, turn it off briefly under Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling, then retry the voicemail change on cellular service. Also check Settings > Focus to make sure a Focus mode is not blocking calls while you test.

If error 1035 still appears, the next steps are to refresh voicemail-related settings, check for carrier updates, and reset network settings, since the problem may be tied to your carrier profile or voicemail provisioning rather than the Phone app itself.
Reset voicemail and carrier-related settings
If the basic checks did not clear com.apple.mobilephone error 1035, the next step is to refresh anything tied to voicemail provisioning on the carrier side. This error often appears when the iPhone cannot complete a voicemail setup request, update the greeting, or connect to the carrier’s voicemail service correctly. Before changing broader iPhone settings, try resetting the voicemail flow itself and forcing the Phone app to reconnect to your carrier’s voicemail system.
Set up voicemail again from the Phone app
Open the Phone app, tap Voicemail, and look for Set Up Now or any prompt asking you to create a voicemail password and greeting. If the setup screen appears, complete it again, even if voicemail was already configured before. Choose a new voicemail password if prompted, then select either the default greeting or record a short custom greeting. After saving, close the Phone app, reopen it, and test voicemail by calling your iPhone from another phone.

Switch between custom and default greeting
Error 1035 is commonly triggered while saving or updating a voicemail greeting. If you were trying to record a custom greeting, switch temporarily to the carrier’s default greeting. Go to Phone > Voicemail > Greeting, choose Default, then tap Save. Wait a minute and try opening voicemail again. If that works, return to the same screen and record a new custom greeting. Keep it short for the first test, since long recordings or interrupted uploads can fail on some networks.

Visual Voicemail depends on carrier support and account provisioning, so it helps to confirm that standard voicemail still works. Press and hold 1 in the Phone app keypad, or dial your carrier’s voicemail access number if you know it. Follow the voice prompts to check whether your mailbox is active, locked, full, or waiting for initial setup. If the automated system asks you to create a PIN, record a name, or accept terms, complete those steps before trying Visual Voicemail again on the iPhone.
- AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile users: holding 1 usually connects to voicemail, but the exact menu options vary by plan and region.
- Prepaid or MVNO users: voicemail may need to be enabled separately in the carrier account portal or by support.
- Dual SIM users: make sure you are setting up voicemail for the correct line under Settings > Cellular.
Refresh the cellular connection
After adjusting voicemail settings, refresh the iPhone’s connection to the mobile network. Turn on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds, turn it off, then wait for your carrier name and signal bars to return. You can also restart the iPhone after saving voicemail changes. This forces the device to re-register on the network and can help it pull updated voicemail and carrier configuration from the provider.
If the error returns immediately, check whether call forwarding or conditional call forwarding was recently changed. Voicemail relies on unanswered, busy, or unreachable calls being forwarded to the carrier’s voicemail number. In the Phone app, you can dial common carrier codes such as ##004# and press call to cancel conditional forwarding on many GSM networks, but support varies. If you are unsure, ask your carrier to reset voicemail forwarding from their side rather than experimenting with codes.
When voicemail setup still fails after these steps, the issue is likely tied to carrier provisioning rather than the iPhone itself. Ask your carrier to reset your voicemail box, reprovision Visual Voicemail, and confirm that voicemail is included and active on your line. Once they make changes, restart your iPhone and open Phone > Voicemail again to complete setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate iOS and carrier settings
If voicemail still shows com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 after basic checks and voicemail resets, update both iOS and your carrier settings. Visual Voicemail and voicemail setup depend on Apple’s Phone app, the modem firmware, and a carrier configuration file that tells the iPhone how to connect to voicemail services. When any of these are outdated, the Phone app may fail while saving a greeting, enabling voicemail, or refreshing the Visual Voicemail screen.
Start with the carrier settings update because it is quick and often directly related to voicemail behavior. Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi or a stable cellular connection, then open Settings > General > About. Stay on this screen for about 30 seconds. If an update is available, a prompt will appear asking you to update carrier settings. Tap Update, wait for it to finish, then restart your iPhone and try setting up voicemail again.
You can also check the currently installed carrier version from the same screen. Go to Settings > General > About, then look next to Carrier. Tapping the carrier line may show extra details such as IMS status or PRL information, depending on your network. You do not need to manually download this file; iPhone receives carrier settings from Apple and your mobile provider when they are available.
Next, install any pending iOS update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update appears, tap Download and Install. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and make sure it has enough battery, or plug it into power. After the update completes, open the Phone app and check Voicemail again. If prompted, set up your voicemail greeting from scratch rather than restoring an old custom greeting immediately.

Before updating
- Back up your iPhone using iCloud or a computer, especially before installing a major iOS version.
- Free up storage if Software Update says more space is needed. Remove unused apps, large videos, or downloaded media.
- Use a reliable connection. Avoid updating over weak public Wi-Fi or unstable cellular data.
- Restart after updating if the Phone app still shows the same error, even if the update process already rebooted the device.
If you recently changed carriers, installed a new SIM or eSIM, transferred your number, or restored the iPhone from a backup, carrier settings become even more relevant. In these cases, remove any old inactive SIM profiles if your carrier confirms they are no longer needed, then check for carrier settings again. For eSIM users, the carrier may need to reprovision the voicemail feature on the line before the update prompt appears or before Visual Voicemail starts working correctly.
After updating iOS and carrier settings, test voicemail in two ways: call your own number to confirm standard voicemail works, then open the Voicemail tab in the Phone app to check Visual Voicemail. If regular voicemail works but Visual Voicemail still returns error 1035, the issue is likely tied to the carrier’s voicemail provisioning rather than the iPhone software itself.
Reset network settings on your iPhone
If voicemail still returns com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 after checking your greeting, carrier settings, and iOS updates, the next practical step is to reset your iPhone’s network settings. This does not erase your photos, apps, messages, contacts, or voicemail data. It only removes saved network-related configuration, which can clear a corrupted cellular, Wi-Fi, VPN, or carrier connection profile that may be blocking voicemail setup.
To reset network settings, open Settings and go to General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Enter your passcode if prompted, then confirm the reset. Your iPhone will restart, and after it powers back on, it will rebuild its cellular and network configuration from scratch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After the restart, give the iPhone a minute or two to reconnect to your carrier’s network. Make sure you see signal bars, then open the Phone app and tap Voicemail. Try setting up or changing your voicemail greeting again. If you use Wi-Fi Calling, turn it back on by going to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling, because network resets can disable or refresh this setting.
What this reset changes
- Saved Wi-Fi networks are removed: You will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords for home, work, or public networks.
- Bluetooth-related network preferences may refresh: Some devices may need to reconnect or pair again.
- VPN and APN settings may be removed: If you use a work VPN, security app, or manually entered APN, you may need to reinstall or reconfigure it.
- Cellular settings are refreshed: Your iPhone requests fresh network information from the carrier, which can help voicemail activation work correctly.
This reset is especially useful if error 1035 started after switching SIM cards, moving to eSIM, traveling internationally, restoring from a backup, changing carriers, or installing a carrier update. In those situations, the Phone app may still be trying to use old voicemail routing information. Resetting network settings forces the iPhone to discard those stale details and reconnect using the current carrier profile.
If the error remains after the reset, test voicemail while connected to cellular data rather than Wi-Fi. Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily from Settings > Wi-Fi, confirm that cellular data is enabled under Settings > Cellular, and try again. You can also toggle Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds and then off to force another carrier reconnection before retrying voicemail setup.
If resetting network settings does not fix com.apple.mobilephone error 1035, the problem is likely on the carrier side rather than the iPhone itself. Your voicemail feature may need to be reprovisioned, your line may need a voicemail reset, or your account may not be correctly enabled for Visual Voicemail. At that point, contact your carrier and ask them to refresh voicemail service on your line, then restart your iPhone and try setting up voicemail again.
When to contact your carrier or Apple Support
If you have already restarted your iPhone, checked your cellular connection, updated iOS and carrier settings, and reset network settings, com.apple.mobilephone error 1035 may no longer be something you can fix only from the device. This error is often tied to the carrier’s voicemail platform, your account provisioning, or the way Visual Voicemail is activated on your line. At that point, contacting your carrier is the most direct next step.

Contact your carrier first if voicemail still will not activate
Your carrier controls standard voicemail, Visual Voicemail, voicemail passwords, call forwarding rules, and the backend feature flags attached to your phone number. Even if the Phone app is the place where the error appears, the failure may be happening when the iPhone tries to communicate with the carrier voicemail system. Ask your carrier to check the following items on your account:
- Voicemail provisioning: Confirm that voicemail and Visual Voicemail are enabled on your line.
- Voicemail password status: Ask them to reset the voicemail password or clear any failed setup state.
- Feature compatibility: Make sure your plan supports Visual Voicemail on iPhone.
- Carrier voicemail outage: Check whether voicemail services are degraded in your area.
- Account restrictions: Verify that there are no billing holds, number transfer issues, or SIM activation problems.
- Call forwarding conflicts: Ask whether conditional call forwarding is correctly routing unanswered calls to voicemail.
When you call, be specific. Say that you are seeing “com.apple.mobilephone error 1035” while setting up or updating voicemail on an iPhone. Mention the troubleshooting steps you already tried, including any iOS update, carrier settings update, and network settings reset. This helps the support agent skip basic scripted steps and look at line provisioning or voicemail activation from their side.
Contact Apple Support if the carrier confirms the line is fine
If your carrier says voicemail is active and correctly provisioned, the issue may be with the iPhone software, Phone app behavior, eSIM/SIM handling, or a device-specific configuration problem. Apple Support can help inspect diagnostics, confirm whether the device is properly registering carrier services, and determine whether the issue is related to iOS rather than the account. This is especially worth doing if other iPhones on the same carrier account can set up voicemail normally, but yours cannot.

Before contacting Apple, gather a few details: your iPhone model, iOS version, carrier name, whether you use a physical SIM or eSIM, when the error started, and whether it began after an iOS update, carrier switch, number transfer, SIM replacement, or device restore. If possible, also test whether regular calls, cellular data, SMS, and inbound missed calls work normally. These details can help narrow down whether error 1035 is isolated to voicemail or part of a broader cellular activation issue.
