Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →com.apple.family.error -1005 usually appears when an Apple Account cannot accept or re-accept a Family Sharing invitation. It is generally an account or invitation-state problem, not evidence that your iPhone is damaged. Start by accepting any pending Apple Account terms, confirming the invited account, and checking whether it is already attached to another family. Then resend the invitation or use Invite in Person. If the same account fails on multiple devices and methods, Apple Support may need to repair the Family Sharing state.
What com.apple.family.error -1005 means
Apple has not published a definitive public explanation for Family Sharing code -1005. Reports place it mainly in failed join or rejoin attempts, especially after someone was removed, left a family, or changed groups. Treat it as a generic Family Sharing account-state or invitation failure.

This is not the same as an HTTP 1005 error used by some websites for access denial. It also is not specifically an Apple Music, payment, or hardware error, although those services can have separate problems after membership changes.

Apple says one Apple Account can belong to only one Family Sharing group, and switching to another group is limited to once per year. That rule is often more important than the device being used. See Apple’s current guidance at Apple Support.

Fix the error in this order
1. Complete pending Apple Account prompts
On the invited iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap the name at the top, and look for an alert requiring updated Apple Account, iCloud, or terms-and-conditions approval. Complete it, then retry the invitation. On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings, select the Apple Account profile, and complete any required action.
Users in Apple Community discussions repeatedly report that accepting updated terms allowed the invitation to finish, but Apple has not defined -1005 as meaning “unaccepted terms.” The exact prompt and location vary by operating-system version and account state. One example report is available at Apple Community.
2. Verify the account that received the invitation
On the invited device, go to Settings > [your name] and note the Apple Account email address or phone number. It must exactly match the account selected by the organizer. On Mac, Apple likewise instructs that the device be signed in to the account to which the invitation was sent: Mac Family Sharing setup.
Do not assume the account used for iCloud is the same one used for Media & Purchases. People can have separate accounts, which may explain missing purchases after joining, but an account mismatch can also prevent the invitation itself from being accepted.
3. Check existing Family Sharing membership
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > Family. Determine whether the account is still in another family. If it is, resolve that membership before sending another invitation. Repeatedly leaving and joining groups can consume the once-per-year switching allowance and make the situation harder to fix.

If the invited device shows an old family while the organizer’s device says the person was removed, stop sending duplicate invitations. The two screens may reflect an inconsistent server-side membership state that requires Apple Support.
4. Cancel or resend the organizer’s invitation
On the organizer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family, tap the invited person, review the status, and choose Resend Invitation when available. Use the correct Apple Account email address or phone number. Avoid opening several old invitations on different devices at the same time.

5. Use Invite in Person
Invite in Person bypasses broken Messages, Mail, browser, or AirDrop links. Both people must be together, and the invitee enters credentials directly into Apple’s interface on the organizer’s trusted device.
- On the organizer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Family.
- Tap the Add Member button, then Invite Others > Invite in Person.
- Have the invitee enter the exact Apple Account email address or phone number and password, then complete the onscreen steps.
Apple’s iPhone instructions are at Invite in Person on iPhone. On Mac, use Apple menu > System Settings > Family > Add Member > Invite People > Invite in Person; see Apple’s Mac guide. Never send an Apple Account password by text or give it to a third-party repair service.

6. Accept through Settings instead of the original link
If the text or email link fails, use the built-in invitation screen. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > Invitations and follow the instructions. On Mac, open System Settings > Family and look for the pending invitation. This is an Apple-supported alternative to the original message link: Apple’s invitation guidance.

7. Test another network and disable interference temporarily
Try cellular data, another trusted Wi-Fi network, or a personal hotspot. If a VPN, DNS filter, parental-control service, security app, or corporate configuration profile is active, disable it briefly for the test and restore it afterward. Community users have reported both network changes and VPN disabling helping, but these are diagnostic steps rather than guaranteed fixes. See the reports at Apple Community and Apple Community.
8. Restart and update both devices
Restart the organizer’s and invitee’s devices, install available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates, and try once more. This is low-risk maintenance, not a confirmed release-specific fix; reports span multiple operating-system generations.
9. Separate joining problems from shared-content problems
If membership succeeds but Apple Music, App Store purchases, or another shared service is missing, check Settings > Family > [your name] > Purchases. Confirm the account used for purchases and the Family Sharing account are configured as intended, and that purchase sharing is enabled. Apple explains the distinction at Family purchase sharing. This post-join issue does not by itself explain a failed invitation.
If you were removed and invited again
Removal can leave an invitation or membership display out of sync temporarily, particularly when the person is invited again immediately or accepts on more than one device. Check the Family screen on both devices, cancel old invitations where possible, and issue one fresh invitation to the verified account. Do not repeatedly leave and rejoin: Apple’s annual switching limit can turn experimentation into an eligibility problem.
Leaving a family can also remove access to shared subscriptions and purchases, location sharing, and organizer-managed Screen Time. Review the consequences before deliberately leaving an existing group; Apple describes them at Manage Family Sharing.
Child and teen account exceptions
Generic leave-and-rejoin instructions may not apply to a child or teenager.
- Age thresholds and account rules vary by country or region.
- Children under 13 generally cannot simply be removed; Apple may require transfer to another family or deletion by a parent or guardian.
- For ages 13–17, the organizer may need to disable Screen Time or other parental controls before leaving, removal, or transfer is possible.
- Some accounts must remain connected to Family Sharing until a specified local age.
- Parental consent for an existing child account can require a verified payment method and a consent agreement.
Use Apple’s child-account guidance at child and teen Family Sharing rules and its consent instructions at parental consent and Invite in Person.
What not to do
- Do not erase the iPhone or iPad. A reset cannot repair a server-side membership conflict and risks data loss.
- Do not sign out of iCloud as a routine fix. Signing out can create password, synchronization, Apple Pay, and local-data complications.
- Do not create a new Apple Account. It can split purchases, subscriptions, iCloud data, and parental-control history from the intended account.
- Do not repeatedly switch families. The once-per-year limit applies even when the original switch was made during troubleshooting.
- Do not share credentials with “Apple ID unlock” or Family Sharing repair services. They cannot reliably repair Apple’s account state and may capture your password.
When Apple Support is the right next step
Contact Apple when terms are complete but the invitation still fails; the account appears in no family yet cannot join; organizer and invitee screens contradict each other; a fresh invitation and Invite in Person both fail; or a child account is stuck after removal or transfer. Persistent failure across devices and invitation methods points toward account or server investigation rather than a damaged phone. Apple Community responders also direct unresolved cases to Apple Support: Apple Community.
Give the support representative:
- The exact message, including the minus sign:
com.apple.family.error error -1005. - The Apple Account email address or phone number involved.
- Whether the person recently left, was removed from, or switched families.
- Organizer and invitee device models and iOS, iPadOS, or macOS versions.
- Which methods failed: Messages, Mail, Settings, and Invite in Person.
- Whether terms were accepted and whether a VPN, DNS filter, or managed profile was enabled.
- The date and approximate time of the failed attempt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I accept a Family Sharing invitation without opening the text message?
Yes. On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > [your name] > Invitations; on Mac, check System Settings > Family. You can also have the organizer use Invite in Person.
Best Value
Will leaving Family Sharing delete my purchases?
Leaving normally does not erase purchases from your Apple Account, but it removes access to other family members’ shared purchases and subscriptions and can affect location sharing and Screen Time management.
Should I turn off my VPN?
Temporarily disabling a VPN or filter is a reasonable network test. Community reports describe occasional improvement, but Apple has not established VPN interference as the official meaning of error -1005.
Can Apple Support reset Family Sharing on my account?
Apple Support can investigate and correct account or server-side Family Sharing states when normal invitations fail. Provide the error text, account details, device versions, and troubleshooting steps already attempted.
