UpdraftPlus is the best general-purpose starting point, including a capable free edition. Jetpack VaultPress Backup is the better fit for real-time, off-site protection and WooCommerce; BlogVault is strongest when you want a managed backup and staging service; Duplicator Pro excels at migrations and portable recovery packages; and Solid Backups remains a mature paid option for agencies and former BackupBuddy users.
There is no universal winner. Choose according to your recovery-point objective (how much recent work you could lose), storage ownership, site size, WooCommerce or multisite requirements, and whether you can recover when WordPress administration is unavailable.
What a WordPress backup must contain
A useful backup is more than a database export. It should include the database, uploads, plugins, themes, relevant WordPress core files, custom directories, and any configuration needed to rebuild the site. Keep at least one copy away from the production server: a backup on the same host can disappear with the account, filesystem, or server.
Backup types are not interchangeable:
- Scheduled snapshots run at an interval such as daily or hourly.
- Incremental backups add only changed data after an initial full copy, reducing workload and storage.
- Real-time backups record changes around site activity, shrinking the potential loss window but not guaranteeing zero data loss.
- On-demand backups are useful immediately before updates or major edits.
- Migration packages are designed to move or clone a site and are not automatically a complete long-term backup policy.
Whatever you choose, test an actual restore. A successful upload or archive message does not prove that the database, media, custom code, and URLs can be recovered.

How the leading choices differ
UpdraftPlus: best free and general-purpose option
UpdraftPlus is the safest default for many blogs, brochure sites, and small businesses. Its WordPress.org listing reports more than 3 million active installations, and the free edition supports scheduled backup, restoration, migration, and remote destinations including Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3 or compatible storage, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, DreamObjects, OpenStack Swift, and email. See the UpdraftPlus listing for the current feature set.
Premium adds incremental backups, automatic pre-update backups, more destinations (including OneDrive, Azure, Google Cloud, Backblaze B2, SFTP, SCP, pCloud, WebDAV, and UpdraftVault), multisite/multi-network compatibility, checksums, deeper reporting, non-WordPress files, and custom database tables. The free edition is therefore not “zero work”: you must configure remote storage, retention, alerts, and restore testing yourself. A competitor comparison has displayed approximately $70/year for Premium, but treat that only as a price signal and confirm the official price.
Jetpack VaultPress Backup: best for real-time and WooCommerce
Jetpack advertises real-time cloud backups, one-click restores, migration, a 30-day archive/activity log, and 10 GB of included backup storage. Its product page says the service backs up the database and files, including plugins, mu-plugins, themes, and uploads, and includes WooCommerce customer and order data. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance tests. Details are on Jetpack VaultPress Backup.
The displayed introductory price is $4.95 per month for the first year when billed yearly, against a displayed regular price of $9.95 per month; renewals are not the introductory rate. Jetpack’s support page lists storage add-ons of $2.95/month for 10 GB, $5.95/month for 100 GB, and $9.95/month for 1 TB, subject to confirmation. Backups remain in Jetpack infrastructure rather than your own Google Drive or Dropbox, and the official page says multisite is not currently supported. Jetpack also claims restoration can occur while the host is unavailable and that an earlier site state can be restored while keeping newer WooCommerce orders and products current; verify the exact behavior for your store before relying on it.

BlogVault: best managed backup and staging workflow
BlogVault operates primarily as a hosted backup service connected to WordPress through a plugin. Its materials emphasize off-site incremental backups, one-click restoration, migration, and staging. The comparison document lists backup intervals from 24 hours down to 1 hour depending on plan. That model can reduce the administration and server work involved in maintaining backups, which suits business-critical sites and agencies.
Exact frequencies, site limits, retention, and prices change by plan. Check the live BlogVault pricing page and understand what happens to backup access and exports if the subscription ends. A staging environment is useful for testing updates but is not an independent backup.
Duplicator Pro: best for migrations and emergency packaging
Duplicator packages WordPress files and the database into a portable archive and installer, making it particularly useful for host moves, cloning production to staging, and recovery work. Its WordPress.org listing highlights migration, multisite workflows, and restoration features. Duplicator’s comparison page claims Pro can restore a site when the administrator is locked out of wp-admin; that is a vendor claim, so confirm the required hosting, SFTP, PHP, and database access before an emergency.
A single package can become very large. PHP memory and execution-time limits, available disk space, compression time, and database size can all cause failures. Keep several verified packages rather than treating one migration archive as a continuous, transaction-level backup. Duplicator’s comparison page displays $69/year, while the current product price should be checked at Duplicator’s official pricing page.

Solid Backups: best mature agency-oriented alternative
SolidWP describes Solid Backups as the successor to BackupBuddy. It is aimed at users who want a traditional WordPress backup product with detailed schedules and restoration controls, particularly agencies already familiar with that ecosystem. A SolidWP product page displays $99/year for one site, but plans and promotions can change; verify the current offer at Solid Backups.
It is a weaker fit if you require a substantial free tier, prefer a fully managed cloud dashboard, or do not want to monitor subscription renewals and storage arrangements.
Choose by site type
- Personal blog or brochure site: UpdraftPlus Free with a remote destination and a tested daily schedule is usually sufficient.
- WooCommerce, membership, forums, or frequent publishing: Prefer real-time or near-real-time protection. Jetpack is the clearest fit in this shortlist; confirm how restores handle orders created after the selected point.
- Business-critical or agency-managed site: BlogVault’s managed dashboard, staging, and off-site workflow can justify a subscription.
- Host migration or cloning: Duplicator Pro is purpose-built for portable packages and installer-based recovery.
- Multisite: UpdraftPlus Premium advertises multisite/multi-network support and Duplicator Pro supports multisite workflows; Jetpack VaultPress Backup currently does not, according to its product page.
- Ownership of backup files: UpdraftPlus is the clearest choice because you can send copies to storage you control, such as S3-compatible storage, SFTP, Google Drive, or Dropbox.
- Large site: Favor incremental or externally managed processing, inspect logs and archive sizes, and ask your host about CLI or host-level backups before relying on a browser-triggered archive.
Configure any backup plugin correctly
- Select a complete-site mode, not database-only, and include custom directories and database tables your plugins use.
- Configure at least one off-site destination. A local copy is useful but must not be your only copy.
- Set the interval to match your change rate: daily for low-change sites, hourly or real-time for stores and user-generated content.
- Keep multiple generations so a corrupt or malicious change is not your only restore point.
- Create an on-demand backup before WordPress, theme, plugin, or PHP updates.
- Check logs for successful database and file transfers, not merely a completed job notification.
- Download or inspect an archive and verify media, themes, plugins, custom files, and database content are present.
- Restore to staging or a temporary host before you need the backup.
- Document the dashboard, hosting, SFTP/SSH, database, cloud-storage, and recovery credentials required.
- Keep one copy independent of the hosting account and retain the previous working backup until a new restore is confirmed.
How to test a restore
- Create a staging site or temporary host with a compatible WordPress, PHP, and database environment.
- Restore the selected backup without overwriting production.
- Check the homepage, WordPress administration, media library, internal links, and uploads.
- Test logins, forms, search, email, custom post types, plugin settings, and scheduled tasks.
- For WooCommerce, test products, checkout, customer accounts, payment integrations, and order records; decide how orders created after the restore point will be reconciled.
- Check domain, path, serialized URLs, file permissions, and HTTPS configuration.
- Record the time, credentials, and steps required, then keep the known-good backup until the test is complete.
Common failure modes and safeguards
The archive exists but will not restore
Incomplete archives, corrupt database dumps, PHP or MySQL incompatibility, insufficient disk space, missing custom directories, URL changes, permissions, and plugin conflicts are common causes. Preserve the current database before overwriting it, download a second copy, and contact the host or vendor for a business-critical incident.
WordPress administration is inaccessible
Ask whether the product offers an external dashboard, standalone installer, recovery URL, or requires wp-admin. Keep hosting-panel, SFTP/SSH, and database access available. Duplicator specifically promotes recovery when locked out of wp-admin; do not assume the same route exists in every plugin.

The host is down
A host-local backup may be unavailable with the server. Vendor-hosted services such as Jetpack and BlogVault are designed to keep copies off-site, while user-controlled destinations give you an independent archive if credentials and retention are maintained.
Privacy and compliance
Backups can contain names, addresses, email, order data, password hashes, private uploads, and form submissions. Review encryption in transit and at rest, data-center location, retention and deletion controls, account access, exportability, and the vendor’s data-processing terms. No plugin automatically makes a site GDPR-compliant.
What “free” and “unlimited” really mean
A free plugin can still require paid cloud storage, configuration time, monitoring, downloads, retention planning, and restore tests. Likewise, “unlimited backups” can coexist with limits on storage, retention, sites, or support. Compare the complete operating cost and renewal price, not just the first checkout screen. Jetpack’s $4.95 monthly figure is explicitly a first-year annual-billing promotion, and BlogVault’s exact current price should be checked on its live pricing page.
Bottom line
Start with UpdraftPlus if you want a flexible, inexpensive backup you can store in your own cloud account. Choose Jetpack VaultPress Backup when a WooCommerce or high-change site needs real-time, vendor-managed protection and you accept renewal and storage dependence. Choose BlogVault for a managed agency and staging workflow, Duplicator Pro for migrations or recovery packages outside normal wp-admin access, and Solid Backups for a paid, traditional agency-oriented system. Whichever you select, the decisive feature is a complete off-site backup that you have successfully restored.
