You do not need a special handheld edition, Steam installation, Xbox app, or Armoury Crate to use it. Download the official Windows installer, sign in, choose the Ally’s microphone and speakers in Discord’s Voice & Video settings, then join a server and voice channel.
The steps below are designed for touchscreen-first use on Windows 11, with optional headset, overlay, and gameplay streaming guidance.

What you need
- A ROG Ally or ROG Ally X with Windows and an internet connection.
- A Discord account, or an email address and phone number if Discord requests verification.
- Enough normal free Windows storage for a desktop application; no special storage quota is required here.
- Optionally, a wired, USB, or Bluetooth headset and a physical keyboard for easier setup.
ASUS documentation identifies Windows 11 on the relevant Ally models, which is why the regular Windows Discord client is the correct version: ASUS ROG product guide.
Install Discord on the ROG Ally
- Press the Windows button on the Ally or tap the Windows icon on the taskbar.
- Open Microsoft Edge or another installed browser.
- Go to Discord’s official download page: discord.com/download.
- Tap Download for Windows.
- When the download completes, open
DiscordSetup.exefrom the browser’s Downloads panel or the Windows Downloads folder. - Approve the Windows security prompt if it appears and wait for Discord to install and launch.
- Choose Log In or Register. Complete email, phone, or two-factor verification when requested.
Discord documents this Windows route and the DiscordSetup.exe installer in its Desktop Installation Guide. Discord may update itself after the first launch.

Open Discord without a keyboard
After installation, tap Start, search for Discord, and tap the result. You can also use a desktop shortcut or pin Discord to the taskbar. Armoury Crate SE can be useful for organizing games and device controls, but it is not required to launch Discord.
If your Armoury Crate SE version offers an Add Game/App or similar library control, you can add Discord for a controller-friendly shortcut. Labels and library behavior vary between ASUS updates; if Discord is absent there, launch it from Windows instead. ASUS provides current Armoury Crate downloads and support at its official support page.
Sign in, join a server, and enter voice chat
Sign in or register
Select Log In for an existing account. Select Register to create one, then provide the requested details, verify the account, and choose a username or display name. Discord explains account creation and its basic interface in the Beginner’s Guide.
Join a server
Use an invitation link from someone you trust, or tap the Add a Server control and follow Discord’s discovery or invitation flow. A server is a community space; it contains separate text and voice channels. Do not accept random invitations or download files offered by unknown members.
Join a voice channel
- Open the server in Discord’s left column.
- Tap a channel marked with a speaker icon.
- Confirm that the voice connection panel shows you connected and that the microphone meter reacts when you speak.
- Use the microphone button to mute yourself, the headphones or deafen control to silence incoming audio, and the disconnect control to leave.
Joining a voice channel generally connects you without placing a traditional ringing call. Other members can see that you joined. Discord’s built-in controls are not automatically mapped to every Ally button, so use the touchscreen, mouse, keyboard, or a shortcut you have configured.

Choose the Ally microphone and speakers
- In Discord, tap the User Settings gear, usually near the lower-left of the window.
- Open Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the built-in microphone or the microphone on your connected headset.
- Under Output Device, select the Ally speakers, wired headset, Bluetooth headset, USB audio device, dock, or monitor you intend to use.
- Speak and watch the input meter or run Discord’s microphone test. Adjust input sensitivity, input volume, and output volume as needed.
Device names differ between the original Ally, Ally X, Windows updates, drivers, docks, and headsets. Also check Windows microphone permission and the Windows volume mixer. ASUS directs users to Discord’s Voice & Video controls for Discord audio configuration; its related guidance is at ASUS support.
Headset choices and echo prevention
3.5-mm wired headset
This is usually the most predictable option. Insert the plug fully and confirm that Windows changes the output and input devices.

Useful when the Ally is docked, but connecting or disconnecting it can change Windows’ default audio device. Recheck Discord’s selections afterward.
Bluetooth headset
Bluetooth is convenient but can introduce latency, battery limits, or a switch between stereo and hands-free profiles. Select the intended profile in both Windows and Discord.
Built-in speakers and microphone
They are adequate for basic chat, but speakers can feed game sound back into the microphone. Lower speaker volume, use push-to-talk temporarily, or switch to a headset if others hear an echo.

Use Discord while playing a game
- Open Discord and join the desired voice channel.
- Launch the game from Windows, Armoury Crate SE, or your normal shortcut.
- Return to Discord with the taskbar,
Alt + Tab, or the touchscreen when you need to mute, deafen, or change a device.
Optional keyboard shortcuts commonly include Ctrl + Shift + M for mute, Ctrl + Shift + D for deafen, and Ctrl + , for User Settings. Discord settings, keyboard layouts, and current builds can change shortcut behavior, so treat these as conveniences rather than guaranteed Ally controls.
Should you enable Discord Overlay?
Overlay can show messages or voice participants and provide in-game controls. It is optional, can conflict with games, anti-cheat systems, capture tools, or other overlays, and may add overhead. Start with it disabled if you only need background voice chat; enable it when in-game Discord controls are worth the possible compatibility issues. Discord’s current overlay documentation is in its Voice, Video and Streaming support hub.
Share gameplay or the Ally screen
- Join a voice channel, direct message call, or group DM.
- Tap Share Your Screen or the stream control.
- Choose the game window or the entire screen, then select the quality options available to your account and server.
- Start streaming and stop it from the call controls when finished.
Discord supports gameplay and screen sharing in these call contexts. Window capture can fail with some rendering modes, anti-cheat systems, elevated permissions, exclusive fullscreen games, or conflicting overlays. If the game is missing or the preview is blank, launch the game first, switch to borderless windowed mode, restart Discord, try full-screen sharing, or disable other overlays. Manage performance and battery use
Discord runs as a background Windows application and uses CPU, memory, network bandwidth, and battery. Voice-only chat normally requires fewer resources than video or screen streaming. Animated effects, video, multiple launchers, and overlays can add load, which is more noticeable on a handheld than a plugged-in desktop. There is no fixed FPS or battery penalty that applies to every Ally model, Windows build, Discord build, and performance profile.
- Disable Discord auto-start if you do not need it every session.
- Use voice-only chat and turn off video or unnecessary effects.
- Avoid streaming demanding games while on battery; plug in for long broadcasts.
- Close unused overlays, launchers, and background applications.
- For a short session, use the browser client at discord.com/app as a no-install fallback, although Discord generally recommends desktop clients for the best experience.
Fix common Discord problems
Discord will not install
- Download again only from discord.com/download.
- Restart Windows and run the installer again.
- Check whether Windows Security or antivirus software blocked it.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- If a damaged installation exists, remove Discord from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and reinstall.
Do not use unofficial portable installers or third-party download sites.

The installer opens and closes immediately
Restart the Ally, open Task Manager, end stuck Discord processes, and rerun the official installer. If necessary, uninstall Discord from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and install again. Windows labels can vary slightly by build.
No microphone input or others cannot hear you
- Recheck Voice & Video > Input Device and confirm the meter responds.
- Check Windows microphone privacy permission, Discord’s mute button, and any physical headset mute switch.
- Raise input volume and temporarily disable push-to-talk.
- Check whether a server moderator muted you.
- Disconnect and rejoin the channel, then restart Discord.
- Update Ally audio, chipset, and Windows components if the device is not detected.
You cannot hear other members or game audio
- Check Discord’s output device, Windows volume mixer, and the Ally’s mute state.
- Reconnect the headset and disconnect unused Bluetooth, dock, monitor, or controller audio devices.
- Confirm that Windows and Discord use the same intended output, then restart Discord after changing Windows’ default device.
- Test with a wired headset to isolate Bluetooth profile or latency problems.
Screen share is blank or the game is missing
- Launch the game before starting the stream.
- Try application capture, then full-screen capture.
- Use borderless windowed mode.
- Restart Discord and disable conflicting overlays.
- Check whether the game is running with higher privileges than Discord.
Discord is not listed in Armoury Crate
This is not an installation failure. Start Discord from Windows. If you want a library shortcut, try Armoury Crate’s current app-management controls, whose labels may differ by version.
Discord uses too much battery
- Disable automatic startup and close Discord when it is unnecessary.
- Turn off video and avoid screen streaming on battery.
- Use a lower-performance Windows or Armoury Crate profile for voice-only chat.
- Close other overlays and launchers.
Is Discord Nitro required?
No. You can install Discord, create an account, use text and voice channels, and access ordinary Discord features without Nitro. Nitro is an optional subscription whose current benefits can include larger file sharing, HD streaming, server-limit increases, boosts, and profile customization. Benefits and eligibility can change; see Discord’s Nitro page for current details.
Which setup is best for most Ally owners?
Install the official Windows desktop app, configure Voice & Video before launching a game, and use a wired headset when you want the fewest audio surprises. Leave Overlay off unless you need in-game controls. Use browser Discord only as a temporary or troubleshooting alternative, and treat Armoury Crate as an optional launcher rather than a Discord requirement.
