If a Playwright MCP screenshot stops at the browser viewport, call browser_take_screenshot with fullPage: true and omit target. The first option requests the full scrollable page; the second selects one element and cannot be combined with a full-page capture. If the screenshot still misses content, check what had rendered at capture time before changing image scale or response settings.
Request the full page, not the viewport or one element
Playwright MCP can capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full scrollable page. For a whole-page image, use the documented browser_take_screenshot arguments:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
browser_take_screenshot {
fullPage: true,
filename: "full-page.png"
}
The filename saves a named screenshot artifact that you can inspect. For a full-page capture, leave out target: that argument selects an element, and the current Playwright MCP documentation says it cannot be combined with fullPage (Playwright MCP screenshot tool).

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
This is the documented Playwright pattern (Playwright screenshots guide). It is not an MCP tool call; use the argument format required by the client and server you are actually running.
Check the actual tool call and its parameter names
Inspect the arguments sent by your MCP client, not just the prompt or natural-language instruction that produced them. For Playwright MCP, a full-page request must reach the server as fullPage: true, and it must not also include target.

- If the call has no
fullPageargument or sets it to false, it requests no full-page capture. - If it includes
target, remove that argument when you want the entire page rather than one element. - Use the current
targetname when selecting an element. A GitHub issue dated September 2, 2026 reports that an earlier example usedrefeven though the implementation expectedtarget; in that reported case the unrecognized argument was ignored, leaving a viewport capture. This is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every clipped screenshot (Playwright MCP issue tracker).
Other MCP browser servers may use different tool names and schemas. The arguments above are specific to Playwright MCP; verify the running server before applying them elsewhere.
Diagnose where the screenshot ends
The edge of the missing area can help distinguish a capture-scope problem from content that was not present when the screenshot was taken. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof of the cause.

| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The image ends at the browser viewport boundary | Check that fullPage: true reached the server and was not omitted or set false. |
| The image ends at the edge of a component | Check whether the call includes target. Remove it for a whole-page capture. |
| The image covers the page’s scrollable extent but lacks expected content | Check whether that content had loaded or entered the page’s scrollable extent at capture time. |
| The saved image is complete but the MCP response seems incomplete or too large | Inspect the saved artifact separately from the inline image response. Response delivery and capture scope are different. |
When the options are right, check page loading
A full-page capture covers the page’s scrollable extent, but the screenshot documentation does not guarantee that every page-specific loading pattern will be handled automatically. If the expected content is absent from the page at capture time, changing capture scope alone may not make it appear.
- Wait for a known page-specific loading state or selector before taking the screenshot, if the page exposes one.
- If content loads as the page is scrolled, scroll through the page as a diagnostic and then capture again.
- Compare the resulting file with the page as it appeared in the browser at the time of capture.
Waiting or scrolling may help reveal content on a particular page; neither is a universal fix established by the Playwright MCP documentation. Do not assume lazy loading, sticky headers, a browser defect, or an MCP limitation is responsible without reproducing the issue.
Separate screenshot scope from image response settings
Playwright MCP returns an image inline when no filename is specified. Its server also supports imageResponses modes allow, omit, and only, with allow as the default (Playwright MCP repository). The --image-responses=omit setting can reduce inline response payload, but it does not change the screenshot’s dimensions or page extent. Use a named file when you need to verify the actual artifact.

Capture the details needed to reproduce the problem
If the screenshot remains clipped, keep a record of the setup and exact call so you can distinguish a server configuration issue from page behavior:
- Playwright MCP package or server version and MCP client.
- Browser engine and relevant browser selection or configuration.
- Page URL, or a sanitized reproduction if the URL is private.
- Exact arguments received by
browser_take_screenshot. - Whether the saved image itself is clipped or only the inline tool response is incomplete.
Playwright MCP’s repository documents browser selection and configuration options (Playwright MCP repository). The title alone does not establish which server, version, client, browser, or page implementation is involved, so verify those details before generalizing a fix.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply to get a website screenshot rather than debug an MCP browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing screenshot scale fix a capture that stops at the viewport?
No. In Playwright MCP, css scale uses CSS pixels and is the default; device uses the device pixel ratio for higher resolution. Scale affects resolution, not whether the screenshot covers the full scrollable page.
Does omitting inline image data make a screenshot smaller in page coverage?
No. An image-response setting changes delivery of the result, not the screenshot’s capture extent. Inspect the saved file to distinguish the artifact from the tool response.
