YouTube supplies the ingest address and stream key. The VPS is your operating choice, not a YouTube requirement—and a continuous broadcast does not guarantee one complete 24-hour archive.
What you need before you start
- An always-on Linux VPS with enough CPU, network capacity and transfer allowance for the media and encoding method you choose. There is no single VPS size established as suitable for every codec, bitrate or workload; check the provider’s current specifications and terms.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus local video and audio files that you are entitled to stream.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- The server URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast, copied from Live Control Room.
Test with the actual media before relying on a continuous setup. Confirm that the file has the audio you expect, that FFmpeg can read its codecs, and that your VPS can sustain the selected encode and upload.

Prepare the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use YouTube’s values; do not guess an ingest URL or reuse a key you cannot identify.
- In your FFmpeg output configuration, use the RTMPS server URL and key supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over SSL on port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check stream health before making the broadcast public. Test representative audio and motion, not just a static frame.
Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
Choose the FFmpeg loop and encoding approach
Loop and pace the input
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely. For prerecorded files, -re reads at the input’s native frame rate, which helps pace file input as a live stream. Input options belong before the relevant -i. The basic input pattern is:

This is only the input portion of a command, not a universal ready-to-run broadcast command. The correct output flags depend on the file’s audio and video codecs, pixel format, frame rate, installed FFmpeg build and YouTube output settings.
Stream-copy compatible media or transcode
If the source codecs and stream characteristics are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, stream-copying can avoid an additional encode. If they are not compatible, configure FFmpeg to encode them into a supported format. Stream-copying does not repair incompatible media; transcoding uses VPS CPU and must be tested at the intended resolution and frame rate.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264 as a supported video codec, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Consult the full YouTube live encoder settings table for the bitrate recommendation matching your resolution and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps; audio bandwidth is additional. That figure is an encoder setting recommendation, not a VPS bandwidth requirement or a quality guarantee. Allow network headroom and test the upload.
Build and test the actual output command
Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the output destination, and select encoding flags that match the file and the encoder guidance. The documentation cited here does not validate one complete command for every media file or FFmpeg installation, so verify the command against your installed build and actual input rather than copying a supposedly universal recipe. Check the resulting preview, audio, motion and stream health in Live Control Room.

Keep FFmpeg running on the VPS
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or system service so an exited process can be noticed and restarted. Keep logs, monitor disk space, and check the service and YouTube stream health; these are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. The appropriate server capacity depends on whether you stream-copy or transcode, the selected settings, and the VPS provider’s CPU, network and transfer terms. No particular provider or VPS plan is established as suitable for every setup.
A VPS moves the always-on workload off your home computer, but it adds server setup and ongoing operations. Running FFmpeg on a personal machine is another option if it can remain on and its upload connection is reliable. Neither choice removes the need to manage media rights, stream health and recovery.

Plan for archives and rights before going public
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily a single archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one continuous 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete archive. If retaining a replay matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions and verify the current archive behavior in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Bhajan subject matter does not make a recording free to reuse
You need the necessary rights for the specific content in the livestream, including applicable music licenses. A bhajan composition, a particular sound recording, a performance and an audiovisual video can involve different rights holders. A devotional or traditional subject does not by itself establish that a particular recording or video is free to broadcast.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to avoid interruption. If you archive a livestream, a Content ID claim may be made after the stream ends. Review YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright and Content ID claims. Rights and exceptions depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction; do not treat the topic of a video as proof of permission.

Troubleshoot common failures
