To make Chromium screenshots consistent between local development and CI, capture and compare them in the same pinned environment. Align the Playwright version and browser binary, operating system and dependencies, viewport and device scale factor, and capture timing. Different host systems or rendering settings can produce different pixels even when the page code has not changed.
Why local and CI screenshots differ
A screenshot is the output of more than your page. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A macOS screenshot therefore is not guaranteed to match one produced by Linux CI pixel for pixel.

Playwright’s guidance is direct: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” See Playwright’s visual comparison documentation. The same-environment approach is usually more reliable than trying to make different machines render identically.
Fix differences in this order
-
Use the same Playwright version and browser build
Use the project’s dependency lockfile for both local and CI installs, and use the browser binary managed for that Playwright version rather than an independently updated system Chromium in one environment. Playwright’s browser documentation describes its browser management. If CI caches browser binaries, key the cache to the Playwright version so a dependency update cannot silently reuse a mismatched browser. See the Playwright CI guidance.

-
Align the operating system and dependencies
For the strongest reproducibility, generate and check visual baselines in the same pinned CI image or container. Playwright recommends using its CI container image or installing the required dependencies on the CI agent. If developers work on macOS or Windows while CI runs Linux, treat the CI environment as the visual source of truth instead of expecting local pixels to match it.
-
Set identical viewport and device scale factor
Make the viewport and device scale factor explicit and consistent in the project’s Playwright configuration and screenshot calls. The screenshot API’s
scaleoption can be"css"or"device": CSS scaling produces one output pixel per CSS pixel, while device scaling produces one output pixel per device pixel and can create larger images on high-DPI settings. See the screenshot API reference. -
Let the page settle before comparison
Use Playwright’s
toHaveScreenshot()assertion for visual comparisons. It takes repeated screenshots and waits for two consecutive captures to match before comparing against the baseline, which helps with transient changes during rendering. It does not make different operating systems or browser builds equivalent; fix those environment mismatches separately. See the visual comparison guide.Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Review the diff before changing a baseline
A failed comparison can indicate an intentional interface change, a transient capture, or an environment difference. Inspect the diff and confirm which explanation applies before updating snapshots. For an intentional change, Playwright supports updating them with
--update-snapshots; do not use that option merely to make an unexplained CI failure disappear.
A reproducible Playwright workflow
Keep browser and dependency versions under the project’s normal package and lockfile management, then run the same visual test in the pinned environment used to create its baseline. For example, a test can rely on Playwright’s screenshot assertion rather than taking a single immediate capture:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png');

Configure the project’s viewport and device scale factor consistently, and ensure the page’s relevant content has loaded before the assertion. Generate or update a baseline from the designated environment, review the resulting image diff, and commit the baseline alongside the change when the visual change is expected. Run the same test against that baseline in CI using the matching Playwright-managed browser.

That can be useful when the project deliberately maintains baselines for distinct platforms, since fonts and rendering can differ by platform. For a team aiming at one canonical screenshot result, a single pinned baseline environment is simpler than accepting platform-specific variation.
Troubleshooting symptoms
- Every screenshot changes after a dependency update: check whether the Playwright version changed and whether CI restored browser binaries cached for an older version. Reinstall or refresh the matching managed browser and regenerate baselines only if the change is intentional.
- Local passes but Linux CI fails: compare the host OS and installed dependencies. Use the pinned CI image to generate and validate the baseline rather than treating a desktop OS capture as interchangeable.
- Images have different dimensions: compare the viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot
scalesetting. Device-pixel output can be larger than CSS-pixel output on high-DPI configurations. - The diff changes between repeated runs: investigate capture timing and transient page changes;
toHaveScreenshot()waits for two consecutive identical captures, but it cannot stabilize a page that continues changing. - A large diff appears after updating snapshots: inspect whether the update was run under the intended Playwright version, browser build, and environment. Restore the baseline and rerun from the canonical environment if the update was accidental.
Cost and reliability trade-offs
Running visual comparisons in one pinned CI environment makes results easier to reproduce and avoids maintaining separate baselines for each developer OS. It also means a developer’s local screenshot may not exactly match the CI baseline if their machine differs; the authoritative review should occur in the pinned environment. Platform-specific baselines are an option when cross-platform rendering itself is part of what the team needs to verify.

Hosted visual-testing services are another possible workflow when a team needs to scale review, but they are not required to fix an environment mismatch.
