The operating system this question usually means is ChromeOS Flex, Google’s installable edition for compatible Intel and AMD computers. On a Mac, the correct fix depends on where startup fails: unsupported hardware, a bad USB installer, the Mac’s boot picker, internal-storage detection, or the EFI entry created after installation. Check the exact Mac model against Google’s certified-model list first; most newer Macs are not supported, and non-certified models are not guaranteed to work.
Start with the model: compatibility determines whether any fix can work
Google guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality only on certified models. A Mac that is not listed may still boot, but performance, device functionality and stability are not guaranteed. Google also states that ChromeOS Flex does not support most of the newer Mac models. Therefore, do not choose troubleshooting steps on the assumption that an unspecified Mac is compatible: identify the exact model and year, then read the notes for that model in Google’s current certified-model list.

Before downloading anything, open Apple’s system information or the Mac’s “About This Mac” panel and record the model identifier, model year and processor family. The model name alone can cover several hardware revisions, and a port, graphics or firmware difference can change the result. Use the certified-list notes, not a forum report about a similar-looking Mac, as the deciding reference.
| Requirement | Google’s stated minimum or condition | What it means on a Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible processor | Apple-silicon Macs are outside this stated processor requirement. Confirm the processor and exact model before proceeding. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Meeting 4 GB does not override a model-specific certification warning. |
| Internal storage | 16 GB | The installer needs a valid internal destination larger than approximately 16 GB; the USB installer itself is excluded. |
| Firmware access | Ability to boot from USB and full administrator access to BIOS settings | On a Mac, this translates into using the startup boot picker and any available firmware or startup-security controls. |
| Older components | Intel or AMD components from 2012 or earlier, and Nvidia components from 2014 or earlier, are not recommended or supported | Check the component generation in addition to the model name. |
Why certification matters more than a successful first boot
A non-certified Mac can appear to work from USB and still have a nonfunctional trackpad, wireless adapter, audio device, graphics output or sleep behavior. The certified list and its model-specific notes are the only reliable starting point for deciding whether a persistent installation is sensible. If the model is absent, treat a live boot as an experiment rather than a supported deployment.

Certification is not the same thing as “the installer opened once.” A certified model still needs a correctly written image and a usable internal drive, while a non-certified model can fail later during suspend, networking or graphics initialization. This distinction helps explain why replacing a USB repeatedly cannot solve every black-screen report.
Choose a reversible test or a permanent replacement
Live boot: test hardware without replacing macOS
After starting from the ChromeOS Flex USB, choose the option to try the system before installing it. Use this session to test the functions you actually need: keyboard and trackpad input, display output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, microphone, camera, suspend and wake. Live boot is intentionally limited: Google says it has performance and storage limitations and does not support automatic updates or management enrollment. It is a compatibility check, not a normal long-term installation.
Keep a short checklist while testing. Connect to a wireless network, play audio, adjust brightness, close and reopen the lid if applicable, and test an external display or dock only if you rely on one. A function that works in the live session is encouraging but still does not guarantee that every firmware or update behavior will remain trouble-free after installation.

Full installation: an irreversible data decision
A permanent installation replaces the existing operating system and erases data, applications and settings on the target storage. Back up important files and disconnect backup or external storage drives before opening the installer. Google’s warning is explicit: “Lost data is permanently unrecoverable, even if the installation is not successful.” If you are not prepared to lose the current macOS installation and its files, stop at live boot.
- Copy documents, photos, browser data and any license keys you may need to separate storage.
- Verify that the backup can be opened from another device.
- Disconnect backup disks so the installer cannot confuse them with the destination.
- Record the exact Mac model and read its certified-model notes.
- Have a second computer available if you need to recreate the installer after a failed attempt.
There is no supported “keep macOS and install alongside it” promise in the steps covered here. Treat the permanent option as a replacement of the current system, not as a harmless trial or dual-boot toggle.
Create the ChromeOS Flex USB correctly
Use a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating installation media erases the drive completely. Google notes that some SanDisk and other manufacturer drives do not work as installers, so a drive that is adequate on paper may still need to be replaced. The USB is only installation media; it does not need to remain attached after ChromeOS Flex is installed.

Recommended method: Chromebook Recovery Utility
- On a Mac, Windows or ChromeOS computer, open Chrome and install or open Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Choose Google ChromeOS Flex as the manufacturer.
- Choose ChromeOS Flex as the product.
- Insert the USB drive, select it in the utility and confirm the erase warning.
- Let the utility download the image and write it to the drive. Do not remove the USB until the utility reports completion.
The utility’s manufacturer and product labels matter: selecting a different recovery image creates media that is not the intended ChromeOS Flex installer. Keep the completed USB connected only when you are ready to boot the target Mac.
Alternative image-writing route
Google also documents downloading the ChromeOS Flex image and writing it with a disk-writing utility. This route gives experienced users more control, but it still requires an 8 GB-or-larger USB and still destroys its existing contents. If the resulting drive is not detected or produces a blank screen, recreate it with Chromebook Recovery Utility before changing Mac firmware settings.
Do not judge the drive by its advertised capacity alone: the relevant threshold is at least 8 GB, and the utility must complete the write without errors. If one drive repeatedly fails, switch both the USB device and the port so that a bad connector, hub or flash controller is not mistaken for an operating-system fault.
Boot the Mac from the installer
- Shut the Mac down fully; do not merely close the lid or use a sleep command.
- Insert the ChromeOS Flex USB directly into the Mac. If possible, avoid a hub, dock or intermediary dongle.
- Power on and immediately hold Option, the key next to Command.
- When the startup choices appear, select the USB installer. The label can vary by model; use the certified-model notes if they describe a specific entry.
- At the ChromeOS Flex screen, choose the live-boot option first unless you have already accepted the erase decision.
The timing is important: holding Option only after the normal operating system has begun loading can miss the startup picker. Shut down and try again if the picker does not appear. If a keyboard connected through a dock is unreliable at startup, use the Mac’s built-in keyboard or connect the keyboard directly.
When the USB is missing, refuses to start or shows a blank screen
The USB does not appear in the Option boot picker
- Recreate the installer with Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Try a different USB drive. Google specifically cautions that some SanDisk and other drives fail as installers.
- Move the drive to another USB port and remove any hub, dock or adapter. Testing a different port and a different drive helps isolate the fault.
- Confirm that external USB boot is allowed wherever the Mac’s firmware exposes such a setting. Names and locations differ by device.
- Verify that the Mac is actually shutting down and that you are pressing Option immediately after power-on.
Change one variable at a time when possible. A new drive in the same port tests the media; the old drive in another port tests the port. This simple separation prevents unnecessary firmware changes.

Google identifies three broad possibilities: unsupported hardware, a corrupted installer, and USB-port or dongle problems. Check the exact model against the certified list before spending time on firmware changes. Then recreate or replace the installer and, if practical, test that USB on another compatible computer. A drive that fails on multiple systems is more likely defective than a Mac-specific boot problem.

The installer starts, but input or display functions do not work
Use the live session to determine whether the limitation is isolated to one device. If the model is non-certified, missing hardware support is an expected possibility rather than evidence that the installation procedure is wrong. Do not proceed to permanent installation until the functions you need work well enough in the live test.
Fix “no valid destination” or missing internal storage
ChromeOS Flex does not treat every visible disk as an installation target. Google says it considers drives larger than approximately 16 GB, excludes the USB installer itself, and generally looks for internal rather than removable storage.
- Shut down and remove other removable storage, leaving only the installer and the Mac’s internal drive.
- Confirm that the Mac has internal storage installed and that its capacity exceeds approximately 16 GB.
- Check the certified-model notes for storage or firmware exceptions.
- Recreate the USB if the installer may be corrupted.
- Use the troubleshooting guidance for restoring firmware defaults and checking boot order only when it matches your model and symptom.
Do not apply a setting such as disabling TPM simply because it appears in a generic troubleshooting page. Firmware instructions can be model- and symptom-specific; changing the wrong setting can create a new boot failure. A removable disk that happens to be larger than 16 GB is still not a substitute for the internal destination the installer expects.
Install ChromeOS Flex after the live test
- From the live environment, start the installation command.
- Read the destination and erasure warning carefully. Confirm only after checking that your backups are complete and external drives are disconnected.
- Allow the installer to write to the internal drive. The Mac may restart or shut down when it finishes.
- Wait until the device is fully off, then remove the USB installer.
- Start the Mac again and use the startup choices if it does not select the installed system automatically.
Removing the USB after shutdown prevents the Mac from returning to the installer on the next power-on. If you leave it connected, you may mistake another live session for the newly installed system. If the installer reports failure, do not assume the original files survived; Google says data can be permanently unrecoverable even when installation does not complete.
Fix a black screen or endless startup after installation
A Mac that completed installation but will not enter ChromeOS Flex may be starting from the wrong boot entry. Google’s Mac-specific sequence is:
- Remove the installer USB and open the Mac’s startup boot choices.
- Select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup option. Google’s instructions describe selecting the entry and using Control with a click, or selecting it with the keyboard and pressing Control-Enter.
- Restart and check whether the installed system now loads.
- If the problem remains, shut the Mac down and reset PRAM/NVRAM by holding Command-Option-P-R while powering on. Continue until the Mac has produced two startup chimes. With a Windows keyboard, use Win-Alt-P-R.
Do not reset NVRAM on the older Apple models Google lists as exceptions: iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, 3,1 and 4,1. Google also notes that an NVRAM reset can change brightness and volume settings, so those settings may need to be adjusted afterward.

When ChromeOS Flex hangs at its splash screen
A splash-screen stall is different from failing to see the USB. Google’s general device troubleshooting recommends:
- Reset firmware defaults.
- Check the configured boot mode and try UEFI where the device offers it.
- Recognize that some devices install successfully only in Legacy mode.
- Consider switchable graphics as a possible cause on hardware that has that feature.
- Reinstall the latest Stable release using another USB drive if the installer may be damaged.
These are general device recommendations, not established Mac-specific remedies. Apply them only when the Mac’s model notes and firmware interface support the setting. If the machine is a non-certified Mac, a persistent splash-screen failure may indicate unsupported graphics or firmware rather than a setting that can be safely changed.
Certified versus non-certified, and live versus installed
| Choice | Advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Mac | Google guarantees functionality for the listed configuration and provides model notes | You still need correct media and a working internal drive |
| Non-certified Mac | May let you reuse otherwise unsupported hardware | Performance, features and stability are not guaranteed |
| Live boot | Reversible hardware test without replacing macOS | Limited performance and storage; no automatic updates or management enrollment |
| Full installation | Uses the internal drive as the normal ChromeOS Flex system | Erases the existing operating system, applications, settings and data |
Use the failure layer to choose the next step
| What you see | Most useful first action | Next branch |
|---|---|---|
| USB absent from Option picker | Recreate the USB and try another drive or port without a dongle | Check whether external USB boot is permitted and verify the exact Mac model |
| Blank screen or blinking cursor from USB | Check certification, then replace or recreate the installer | Test the USB on another computer to separate media from Mac hardware |
| “No valid destination” | Confirm internal storage is present and larger than approximately 16 GB | Remove other removable drives and follow model-specific firmware guidance |
| Installation completes, then black screen | Set EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup entry | Use the documented PRAM/NVRAM sequence unless the listed old-model exception applies |
| Splash screen never advances | Review firmware defaults and boot mode | Try the latest Stable image on another USB; treat switchable graphics as a possible factor |
What a safe decision looks like
Install only when the Mac is certified or you accept the unsupported-hardware risk, the live session recognizes the functions you need, and your backup is verified. Stay with live boot when you are still evaluating compatibility or cannot accept permanent erasure. If the model is unsupported and repeated USB replacement does not resolve startup, further firmware changes are unlikely to turn it into a supported ChromeOS Flex device.
The practical order is therefore: identify the model, check certification, back up and disconnect storage, create a known-good 8 GB-or-larger installer, boot with Option, test live, install only after accepting the erase warning, and then select the installed EFI entry if the first restart lands on a black screen.

Can I install ChromeOS Flex on any Mac?
No. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models and says most newer Macs are not supported. A non-certified Mac may boot, but performance, device support and stability are not guaranteed. Check the exact model and its notes first.
What USB drive do I need?
Use a flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the installer erases the drive. Google also warns that some SanDisk and other manufacturer drives may not work, so try another drive if the first one is not detected.
Will live boot erase macOS?
No. Choosing the try-before-install option lets you test ChromeOS Flex without replacing the current system. Live boot has performance and storage limitations and does not provide automatic updates or management enrollment.
Why does the installer say there is no valid destination?
ChromeOS Flex generally expects internal storage larger than approximately 16 GB and excludes the USB installer itself. Remove other removable drives, verify that internal storage is present and working, and follow the model-specific firmware notes.
What should I do if the Mac shows a black screen after installation?
Remove the USB, open the startup choices and set EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default entry. If the issue remains, Google documents a Command-Option-P-R PRAM/NVRAM reset, but not for iMac 5,2 or MacBook 2,1, 3,1 and 4,1.
Can I keep my files and macOS while installing?
The permanent installation replaces the existing operating system and erases data, applications and settings. Back up and verify important files, disconnect backup drives, and use live boot if you are not ready to accept that loss.
What if ChromeOS Flex stops at its splash screen?
Google’s general troubleshooting suggests restoring firmware defaults, checking boot mode, trying UEFI where available, considering switchable graphics and reinstalling the latest Stable release with another USB. These are general recommendations, so apply them only when they match the Mac model and symptom.
The Bottom Line
Check the exact Mac against Google’s certified list, create the installer on a reliable 8 GB-or-larger USB, boot with Option and test live before erasing anything. For post-install black screens, select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex as the default startup entry; use PRAM/NVRAM reset only when your Mac is not one of Google’s listed exceptions.
