How to Fix Chrome Update Problems When an Update Won’t Install

Start with Chrome’s About page and exact error message. Then check restart, update access, operating-system support, and the correct recovery route for Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook.

If Chrome won’t update, open More > Help > About Google Chrome to check its version and see whether it offers Relaunch. If the update still fails, use the exact error message to identify the likely failure, restart your computer, check that security or network controls aren’t blocking Google’s update services, and confirm your operating system is supported. Reinstall only after those checks. On Linux, update Chrome through your package manager; on a Chromebook, update ChromeOS. If an administrator controls updates or you lack administrator rights, contact them.

Check whether Chrome has an update waiting

  1. In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu).
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Wait while Chrome checks for updates. The page shows the installed version. If you see Relaunch, select it to apply the update.

Chrome generally downloads updates in the background and applies them after you close and reopen the browser. If About Google Chrome has no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is already up to date. Save any work before restarting: Incognito windows do not reopen after a browser restart. Google’s update instructions explain the About page and relaunch process.

Use the error message to narrow down the problem

Google Chrome Help groups update errors by where the process failed. Match the full message, not just the fact that the update did not install.

Chrome message What Google identifies Next step
Update failed (Error: 3 or 11) The update server is not available. Restart the computer, then check whether a firewall, antivirus, parental-control tool, proxy, or network policy is blocking update access.
Update failed (Error: 4 or 10) The update check failed to start. Restart and check for security software or device policies that may prevent the update check.
Update failed (Error: 7 or 12) The update download failed. Restart and check that Chrome’s update traffic is not blocked by security or network controls.
Updates are disabled by administrator An administrator or device policy controls updates. Contact your work or school IT team, or the person who manages the device. Do not try to bypass the policy.
Another “Update failed” message The cause is not established by the wording alone. Note the exact message and continue with the general checks below.
