Define the work it will do and the risks of failure, set testable security and governance requirements, then verify the candidate in the environment where it will operate. Frameworks such as NIST AI RMF and OWASP’s security standards help structure that work; none certifies a particular assistant or replaces your acceptance testing.
What does “enterprise-ready” need to mean?
An AI assistant is more than a model. For evaluation purposes, consider the model, application, agent orchestration, integrations, data flows, access controls, and deployment together. A model or repository being called open source does not by itself establish what components you can inspect, how they are licensed, or whether the deployed system meets your organization’s requirements.

Start by recording what is actually available for review: source code, model and component documentation, configuration, and the interfaces your team can test. Check the applicable licenses and obligations for the components you plan to use. Then evaluate the candidate as configured for your proposed deployment; evidence about a model alone does not establish how the full assistant handles your data or permissions.

How should you define the use case and its risks?
Write down the intended tasks and workflows before comparing candidates. The same assistant can pose very different risks when it drafts internal summaries, searches sensitive records, or can take actions through connected systems. Use the context to decide what evidence and acceptance conditions matter.

NIST describes its AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF) as voluntary and intended to improve consideration of trustworthiness in AI design, development, use, and evaluation. It was released on January 26, 2023, and NIST’s current page says it is being revised. Use it to frame organizational risk work, not as a product approval or a substitute for deployment-specific checks: NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
Which frameworks help, and what do they cover?
These resources address related but distinct parts of an evaluation. Use each for the question it is designed to help answer.
| Resource | Useful for | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| NIST AI RMF | Structuring organizational consideration of AI trustworthiness and risk across design, development, use, and evaluation. | It is voluntary guidance, not a product certification or a universal acceptance test. |
| OWASP AISVS | A vendor-neutral catalogue of testable security requirements spanning the AI lifecycle, including training data, model development, deployment, agent orchestration, monitoring, and retirement. | OWASP says it is not a governance framework, risk-management methodology, or product recommendation list. |
| OWASP LLMSVS v2.0 | Security requirements and tests for LLM-backed applications, including architecture, model lifecycle, operation and integration, storage, and monitoring. | OWASP recommends using it alongside other security practices and warns against claiming official OWASP certification. |
| OWASP AI Maturity Assessment | Organizing discussion of readiness and responsibilities across strategy, design, implementation, operations, and governance. | It can help assess organizational maturity; it does not choose an assistant for you. |
| NIST SP 800-218A | Secure development practices for generative AI and dual-use foundation models, including AI-related development requirements. | It explicitly excludes AI system deployment and operation, as well as most data governance and management lifecycle activities. |
AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, reports 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices, with verification levels 1, 2, and 3. Those levels help organize verification depth; the requirement count is not a score for any assistant. LLMSVS v2.0 was published in 2026. Read the standards and select requirements that fit your risks rather than treating a framework’s existence—or a claimed alignment—as proof of safety.

How do you verify security and behavior?
Build a written test plan against the actual assistant and deployment configuration. Include the user-facing interfaces and integrations as well as model and agent behavior. OWASP AISVS provides lifecycle-oriented security requirements, while LLMSVS provides requirements and tests for LLM-backed applications.
Review evidence, not just claims
LLMSVS recommends an open-book assessment: reviewers should have access to relevant documentation, source code, authenticated interfaces, and people able to explain the system. This lets an evaluator compare the stated design with observable behavior and implementation evidence. Record what was available and what could not be independently checked.
Test threats that match the deployment
Include the relevant attack and failure cases in your plan. OWASP’s GenAI security materials identify prompt injection and data leakage as concerns to consider. Treat these as risk categories to test against your own threat model, not as evidence that a particular assistant has—or has not—mitigated them: OWASP GenAI Security Project.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What lifecycle and operational evidence should you request?
Ask how the system is developed and released, how changes and vulnerabilities are handled, what documentation exists for its components and models, and how the proposed deployment is operated. NIST SP 800-218A can inform review of secure development practices for generative AI and dual-use foundation models, but it does not cover deployment and operation or most data governance and management activities. Assess those separately.
For the specific implementation under consideration, check data handling, access controls, logging, retention, update mechanisms, monitoring, and incident response against your organization’s requirements. The cited frameworks support lifecycle evaluation but do not prescribe one universally suitable architecture or configuration. Verify the controls in the environment you plan to use rather than assuming a design description proves operational behavior.

How should you compare candidates and make the decision?
Apply the same evaluation axes to each candidate so that differences reflect evidence rather than inconsistent review. There is no universal score or framework-derived winner; document the basis for the decision and the conditions under which use is acceptable.
- Task performance: Results on representative workflows and the acceptance conditions set for those tasks.
- Security verification: Test coverage, evidence reviewed, findings, and unresolved risks.
- Governance and ownership: Named responsibilities for approval, oversight, operation, and review.
- Data and integration controls: Whether the implementation meets requirements for data handling, permissions, and connected systems.
- Operational maintainability: Whether release, update, monitoring, and incident practices fit the organization’s operating model.
- License obligations: Whether the licenses for the components and models are understood and acceptable for the intended use.
Keep a decision record that identifies the selected candidate and configuration, the evidence considered, remaining risks, mitigations, accountable owners, and any conditions that must be met before or during use. A conditional decision is clearer than treating an unresolved issue as a pass.
